Should you buy a plastic or a ceramic ocarina?

Hi, I'm the Ocarina Boy! I play the ocarina, an ancient wind instrument.
In this video, I will go over the differences, advantages and disadvantages of plastic and ceramic ocarinas.

My first ocarina was a really cheap plastic one. I took it hiking and camping and everywhere I went. It sounded cheap and airy, and was made of a brittle plastic, so eventually it was dropped once too often on a hard surface and the mouthpiece broke, but I enjoyed it so much that my wife bought me a fairly nice ceramic one, which, frankly, plays better than I do, but I'm afraid to take it places. I want to get another plastic ocarina to carry around, one that I can just stick in my pocket and not worry about, one that won't break easily and if it does, or gets lost, won't cost a lot to replace, but better sounding than my first. That's why I watched your vid.

Thanks for breaking this down for us. I appreciate the advice, pros and cons for both. It sounds like the advantages for the plastic ones and basically lower maintenance, and the ceramic ones for better sound and longevity.

Lol at first I was trying to listen to the acoustics of either ocarina, but it became obvious when I heard your fingers tapping the ceramic one. It makes a distinct high pitched "ting" noise. :P Nice video, though. They both sound really great.

When I get better at playing, I want to get a ceramic Zelda replica. I have the plastic Kokiri Edition from Songbird currently and it's a really nice ocarina, but as you said in this video, condensation builds up quickly in the sound hole and becomes an issue. Sometimes just five minutes into me playing, I notice the sound degrading and so I have to stop and clean it out. It's a bit annoying, but I still love my ocarina to death. Sometimes I want to just keep playing and not stop!

I have an Odami Plastic ocarina, as a beginner i definitely recommend a plastic one so you don't get afraid of the ocarina breaking if you drop it for accident

I own three ocarinas two ceramic and one plastic one from STL and I love them but I don't play my ceramic ones every often because of fear of dropping and breaking them.

I'm starting to play an ocarina. I bought a Night by Noble (plastic) and also a TNG (ceramic) and another (ceramic) from an unknown brand. What I notice is that with the plastic one the air escapes more easily from inside, and suddenly I find that I'm left without breath and I have to breathe quickly. On the other hand, with the ceramic ones I always have all the air I inhale, and I don't stay halfway... I suppose one must decide on one or the other, to control the air correctly Does that also happen to you?

All ocarinas require a different breath pressure, but none are better or worse. As you said, it mostly comes down to personal preference. I prefer ocarinas that require a somewhat medium pressure :)

So... would you say that cleaning a ceramic ocarina with demineralised water would be ok?

I find the mouthpiece of the Night by Noble too wide. The other model is more comfortable to blow.
