Have owned 2 L322 (2007, 2011), 2 L405 (2013, 2019). All four cars have been reliable. Never had a mechanical problem. If you use 93 octane, do a basic maintenance every 12 months they are every bit as reliable as an AMG or an M car! Preventative maintenance are the two key words here! Cheers!

Great review, and I love the scenery! The reason the ride is 'a bit crashy' is that the 4.4 litre and the supercharged petrol are fitted with the active anti roll bars. The 3.0 TDV6 is not fitted with them and has a better smoother ride, but not everybody likes it because it leans more in the corners.
@HighPeakAutos4 жыл бұрын
Ah I didn’t know that. Cheers
@Jon-zj2nj3 жыл бұрын
Coming from two previous Discovery 4’s, I tried out both systems before I bought my current RR. The 3.0 rolled much more in corners than the D4, while the 4.4’s roll just seemed normal. I couldn’t tell any difference in ride quality and in the 93,000 miles that I’ve done in it since, I haven’t been able to fault the ride. Ride quality in RR’s seems much more badly effected by the pointlessly over sized wheels and low profile tyres that many of them leave the factory with! If someone has a 5.0 or 4.4, with 20” rims AND a crashy ride, then there’s something wrong with it. My first port of call would be checking the anti roll bar bushes 👍

my 2000 P38 4.0lt V8 petrol cost £1650 3 yrs ago - 113k miles (I've done 5k since ownership). Like property being ALL about Location, Location, Location. RR ownership is ALL about Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance. Mine has suffered ZERO depreciation and over 5k miles has cost about £1500 - all upfront maintenance before I started using it. Being a home mechanic type - I love the more analogue nature of the P38. If I was going to upgrade I would probably opt for a 2008-09 L322 but in all honesty, I'm more likely to spend £5000 rebuilding the engine (if required) before moving on - there is literally nothing else wrong with it. Glad you are enjoying your new purchase - enjoy it and ignore the nay sayers

Nice review. I bought my 2013 (2014 model) L405 Autobiography in January. I had a 2003 L322 Vogue and a Vogue in the 1980s. I loved all of them. You are spot on with the way the car makes you feel. Since most driving nowadays is about moving slowly on crowded roads it’s a very comfortable and quiet place to be. It’s my chill out space. You don’t need to go fast as you can waft along in comfort. My problem is where to go next. Newer ones are much dearer and even the latest model isn’t much different. I don’t like the Bentayga (looks and poor rear seating). The Cullinan has grown on me but is massively expensive even pre-owned. Owning a Range Rover spoils for anything else in terms of driving experience, comfort, practicality and quality. BTW the wooden steering wheel and leather roof lining are wonderful! 😉

The sense of occasion is spot on. No other car makes you feel the same way a Ranger Rover or Disco when you're driving them. The driving position is unparalleled as is the ride. It's one of the few cars I've driven that is rewarding to drive slowly as well as quickly.

I've had a P38 4.6 228bhp V8 Autobiography for six years, only one problem. Well, I say problem, it was the gearbox heat sensor connected to the oil cooler. Nothing wrong with the gearbox, just the sensor. Every MOT passed (since I've had it) with not one advisory. I change all the fluids every two years; Gearbox, transfer case, both diffs and brake fluid. Oil, plugs and all filters done every year. It has never let me down. Nothing done whatsoever to the air suspension, six years and still going strong. I'm not saying I don't replace wearing items. The whole breaking system was renewed last year, even down to the bleed nipples. Why? Was looking very tired, I carry my grandkids, so did it for safety. I was almost going to ask you on another video when you were going to do the full review of your Rover, As my warranty starts to whine down, I'm starting to look at the L405 as my next upgrade, my '11 sport supercharged has been nothing but amazing and the only expense was a deductible payment to replace sway bar bushings which will cause it to sound like the suspension is failing. I was told by my local dealer that the timing chain issue has shown up as recently as 2016 models (supposedly was addressed in '13) but are few and rare. I love mine and can't wait for the upgrade in the next year, this review just essentially confirmed that I'm on the right track with these. I use it for work and drive from Ripon to Scotland every week now covered 47000 miles just had its first MOT. The car without a doubt is the best I have ever driven and I have driven all the Land Rover Range and owned most of them. The issues you mention with the display can be sorted with a software update. Mine displays the Sat Nav and Audio information in the Instrument display if you want it. One thing you didn't mention is the Remote Park Heat facillity which enables you to program the heater to come on and warm the cars interior and the engine half an hour before you set off . So I had a D2 and had the 3 Amigos go on it. I had a L322 and had an issue with the air suspension. It didn't stop me getting my D4. Dial gear stick and all. I don't regret my decision to come back to LR. Mind you, I now don't use it much because of my job and living in the south of the US. But I have to agree with you on 2 things: 1. I enjoy driving it and it puts a smile on my face and 2. why not have the car you want. I wanted it, I can afford it and I plan to keep it for a couple of years and then maybe swap it out for a new Defender 110. Never be worried about the cost if that's the car you want or how far your commute is. I take the D4 to the local airport to stretch its legs (it sits most of the week) and to just enjoy driving it. The D4 is a heavy beast like the L405... I look forward to seeing what you do with the RR.

So, you know the issue with regards to the Bluetooth streaming, not displaying the track information? That was going to be implemented, however the project managers over at Gaydon, were putting pressure on the infotainment department to get the vehicle pushed through to final prototype stage. Because these project managers get bonuses to reach their set time goals (they call them Gateways), that's all they really care about. Sorry, I didn't mean to have a rant. 🙄 I just know what happened about that. Don't ask me how 😉. The Land Rover dealerships have access to a system called "Pathfinder". It interfaces directly with factory software updates. Sadly though, the infotainment department didn't release an update for the L405. No harm in checking with your local dealer for any sw updates. I do know that there was a recent safety recall on the L405s to do with the door locking. Just thought I'd mention that.

Another excellent well balanced review with sound advice about running an expensive vehicle from someone in the know. Also what the last few months have taught us why not have what you want if you can afford it.

For me this can only be a dream. This is not just an expensive car, it's just expensive to run and to maintain. You need to be truly loaded and don't mind the expenditure to own one. On the other hand, it is a very seductive car in so many ways.

It's a fair comment, but have you ever seen anyone reversing a horse into a garage? No? Well there's a reason for that. And the cost of premium sugar-lumps is extortionate. Stick with the Rangie.

I have a 2014 4.4 V8 Autobiography and I absolutely adore it. It is the most complete car money can buy in my opinion and if you can accept there increased running costs then secondhand ones are an absolute steel. I got mine with 48k on the clock and about £65k less than when it was new yet its mint! I bought from a RR main dealer so have the peace of mind in a full warranty and here's the winner for me……for as long as the car has less than 100k miles you can renew the warranty each year for around £1500. Add that to the reducing depreciation and I'm running a £100k luxury car without worries for less than the cost of a new 3 series. I also thought the review was on point, well presented and very informative so share the encouragement for others to enjoy one as we do.

As a Brit living in Texas, as you mentioned, I had to get the 5l supercharged. Just passed 100k miles in a 2013 model... I've had it for the last 25k. I took an extended warranty, and it needed new sway bars (not covered), and transfer box (covered). Have to take rh corners gently to keep the back end from complaining (ill find out why one day and $$$), but all your comments about the pros, and cons, I totally agree with. To me there is no choice, oh, and the Sport mode with the 5 liters - now you are talking a fast car 😁

Unfortunately living on the Yorkshire Moors these things are nowt but a pain in the arse. Nothing like coming round a corner and coming face to face with some solicitor accountant type struggling to control them or even worse the wife on a school run blocking visibility outside schools or the local posh chocolate shop. Proper folk drive defenders up here. Sign of the Times I suppose.

Driving a newer version for work, I agree with your comment about it being poor when switched off. Only lets you listen to the radio/ watch TV for a short time when you put ignition back on. Then, even if sitting in the car with nothing running, tells you to start the engine as battery is low! This is especially a nightmare in London where there are wardens waiting to give you a ticket for ‘idling’ (I wouldn’t want to do that unnecessarily anyway). Great review of the car.

The best RR review I've seen so far. I've had 5 RR over the years and your right the 4.4 diesel is the best . Mines 2 years old now and the best advice you can give when buying any RR is full service history is critical. However nice one may look if it doesn't have a full service history walk away, there's plenty out there. People are always asking me about them and I've even had people questioning me in supermarket car parks about it. I just say its all the car you'll ever need

Absolutely right, a RR is no ordinary car. As you say once your over the peer pressure guilt, which the cars quality, ride and performance makes short lived, it's an awesome vehicle to live with.

Looks the business. Straightforward no nonsense review. As you personal daily driver then it’s a good choice, why not. As you say, look after it, service it well then it should be a keeper. When it’s time to move it on then it should sell pretty quickly. Style, performance and comfort all in one.

Watched the review of the Mk2 MX5 you did and the BMW Z4. In the end I bought a MK2 facelift model Mercedes SLK200 as a weekend car. I’m very happy with it! If one comes your way it’s worth doing a review. They seem quite popular & no I’m not a hairdresser!

Great video, as usual Matt. We have a 2013, Range Rover Sport that we love. It isn't as classy or as comfortable as the full size car but lovely nonetheless. I Drove a 4.4 Vogue SE recently and couldn't believe how luxurious it was, silent on the road too! Just a note, when your car is off, if you press the start button without putting your foot on the brake, the car should give you power for radio, heating, etc

Thanks for sharing your video, I have owned my imaculate L322 TDV8 2008 148k miles from new and am now moving into a 2016 L405 SDV8 currently at 82000 miles over the next week or so from my Daughter & Son-In Law am so looking forward to the upgrade. I understand it has a couple of quirky issues with Airbag dash lights and intermitant suspension warnings we need to address....

Hi Matt, I think you'll find that you can have the accessories without the engine by doing the following : without pressing the footbrake, press the start button. This should be equivalent to pos. 11 of a key ignition car.

As you've already made videos about your Mercedes S-Class purchased for a very cheap price, please keep us updated about your BRITISH LUXURY TANK!!! Because I've finally decided to buy a RR Vogue (or even Autobiography if possible) within 3 years, more or less, and keep it for as long as the diesel will last!! But I'm going with the 3 litre V6 because here in Italy you don't get to pay a higher road tax and the diesel price is not so cheap!! Thanks Matt! Your view on things is appreciated

With regards to having accessories on, such as radio without engine running, DONT have foot on the brake, and press Start button. (Key is in the vehicle with u) The dash lights up and accessories should be on etc. Car will turn off every 12 minutes to help avoid draining the battery. Give this a go... 👍👍
