I completely agree, you can't compare a van staal to reels like a Stella or saltiga like I've seen some videos do. If you're fishing the cape cod canal sure my van staal wouldn't be my first choice but if you're fishing Montauk any reel aside from a van staal is not going to hold up.

@peter kerns my slammer 3 has definitely been holding up , an it's never dry once I hit the surf .

I’m an avid surf fisherman in NJ I own numerous surf setups and the only ones that have van staals are the ones I use when the surf is super heavy, wading out on to sandbars or fishing the rocks. My rods that I use in calm conditions or I will stay dry have shimano stradics on them. but I will say competitors who never failed is zeebaas, I own3 of them and they’ve been being fished for years now without even needing to be serviced!

I fish these exclusively in Florida from a Pier. I get they aren't specifically built for doing that, or for being exposed to the drag pressure I put them to when catching Tarpon. However, what most people in the NE don't realize is the quickness with which we can sling a swimbait at a school of tarpon and the accuracy we can do it without landing it on their head or behind them as they are cruising is second to none. You won't find another reel on the market (besides a ZeeBaaS) that affords that. So, it's non-traditional - but it has it's place out of the water as well.

I'm fishing my van staal right now in the nor-east 3 to 6 days a week with 4 to 6 hour sessions. I am amazed how strong and durable van staal reels are, I didn't even service mine till this year after 3 years ago I purchased it. And it was only because the grease was running low.

I have one VS, the VR 50 for wading around in the flats and reefs where waves hit me and the reel gets wet a lot. That's all I use it for. Great for that type of fishing. I used to use a Penn Spinfisher for that and it held up well too. However, after catching a few fish, I'd semi take it apart and grease it and service the drag system regularly.

Is it for you.?.nailed it.picked up one in a shop in surf city topsail island nc. Beautiful reels. Premium display case ect. Wrong reel for that area was 1st thing that I thought. Too tankish!Quit a job in Charleston SC years ago.hugged the coast N 17 early fall for 31 days in my civic hatchback ,3 rod rack on front with a old town loon 138 on top. Talk about getting a nasty look. Slack the tires on that & cruise by a stick new Chevy super duty or 2. Good lord!anyhow .didn’t get skunked by-any means but that NE rocky coast stuff is no joke. I have yet to catch a striped bass in the mighty Atlantic To this day.. I was having fun on that trip. That was the main goal. Best trip of my life actually. Your area is sweet!Timing was experimental (more like a shot in the dark)campd up logging roads and anywhere else I could find that was interesting. Got a cheap motel room around each 8-9 days to freshen up and tighten up my gear ect. When I got back to my home town (Sandhills nc)I had driven 3000-3300 miles. Had a camp ground crew trying to tidying up & close up for the season chain sawing & replacing rotten boards on picnic tables ect right up on my tent oct 14 .mid-heavy frost & maybe a flurry for a min. Been a while. somwere in Maine not in but near the coast. I think I would have kept going if id have had a passport. These days,Have a 10 year old daughter that’s heard about that trip so many times. She has been asking to “go up the rocky coast “since she has been able to speak. We’re coming. Tips on some stuff she could handle. Maybe a suggestion on an area that you might feel a little uncomfortable sharing with a stranger. Don’t mind a hike in & love getting off the beaten path. Might be able to return the favor one day. wbwills2@gmail.loose lips sink ships if you think of a spot. It’ll go no further. Will check out your guide calendar online for its below. thx. PsThe old town rode 3000+ miles & got fished twice. Looked fishy. Big wide kelp & longish rolling swells. Similar to what I picture the west coast would be like At spots . Bays with steep rock walls. Bag of 1/2 dozen eels & white buck tail.no go.

Good video! Very informative. I just discovered the VS reels and I really like the bail less concept. Now I wonder, would you recommend the VS reels for walleye, bass, crappies? I live in the Midwest. It might be a tad overkill but I’m not sure. I use a Stella for my daily fishing and it’s an amazing reel but I like to keep my options open. I like the concept that these reels are very hardy.

i've owned 3 VS's, 2 150"s & a 200, all US made. me & my wife fished about 130-140 days a year. before VS we fished Penn Z's or Daiwa BG's. because we dunked our reels maintenance was done once a week on our reels. the VS's eliminated that. BUT now there's reels that you can dunk and don't have to maintain it as often as the old Penn Z's or BG's. But if you're going to fish your reel submerged, VS or ZeeBass is the way to go.

I’m in Florida, I don’t compare them to Stella or Saltiga because those aren’t the same. However, Van Staals have been amazing for the fishing style we do here. We have a lot of tough terrain where water gets in and sand. For us is the power, amount of yards, and the reliability that makes us fish with it. We fish big and we need a strong reliable reel for sharks 150-250lb tarpon Goliath groupers, big cubera snappers etc.

So hear is something for future videos. I am new to surf casting. I have been avid I shore fisherman since I have been a kid, now 48 lol old man. However I ran a machine shop for 27 years. The biggest thing about Van Staal compared to Salt x is persion maching. So for example a normal person buys craftsman tools, a good tool for normal people. They are not harbor frieght but they are good quality and guaranteed However your local auto mechanic buy snap on or matco. They are not over priced. They have a higher quality perscion machining quality. Tighter tolerances which makes them better quality as well as longer lasting in a professional stand point of use.

I love my Vr75 however it is not a VSX fully sealed reel. However my Vr takes a beating on land and boat, gets soaked and wet and don’t gotta worry about it, I don’t purposely dunk or fish it underwater tho. Drag is smooth and keeps fished pinned for such a small reel super light and powerful.
@charlieromeo766313 күн бұрын
IMO a $600+ fishing reel should not have plastic parts anywhere in it, period. I just repaired a VSB 150 for a friend's kid. I appreciate that OEM parts are available, but no reel that costs as much as these do should have any substandard materials. The crappy little arm lever spring guide and the associated arm lever spring holder are molded plastic parts that FAIL. I'd rather fish with my old school Mitchell Garcia 300 from 1977. Next time these weak parts fail, I'm going to make replacements using 6061 aluminum, or 316 stainless.

People who are broke or frugal find all kinds of reasons not to buy it or talk crap about the van stall. I only purchase van stalls because I'm never sure when I will dunk the reel or fish from shore. I live in Massachusetts have been fishing saltwater since the 70s. I was a huge Van Staal fiend for a long time like you but I honestly never liked the drag and for that much money?! The drag should be smooth as silk! It's an $850. plus reel! As a high(est)-end Saltwater reel, how is that not the first thing they would engineer to perfection, even before making it waterproof? and the crappy customer service?! WTF am I paying for besides being sand and waterproof, which really isn't the end all of reel tech, it's just nice not having to clean and service it so much. Myself? I expect a smooth-er drag. It's jerky and inconsistent and nobody seems to care or complain! I'm not trashing the Van Staals, just check out the ZeeBaaS ZX Series. 80% manufactured(Bearings sourced from China out of necessity) and 100% assembled in Stratford, CT. by Ron DiCostanzo and Northeast fishing legend John Posh, BEFORE you buy another Van Staal. They actually run about $150. more than a comparable Van Staal but once you've put yourself on the elevator to spring $850. for a fishing reel, if we're being honest? What's another $150. at that point to get EXACTLY what we expected from Van Staal but never got? Great videos, keep up the good work and Tight Lines!
