+Son of a Zombie How so? The only things that affect stopping power are mechanical grip (tires) and quality of brakes (how quickly you can stop, with the limit being either bad brakes, or in the case of good brakes, tire traction). And of course basic stuff like ABS.
@LOLKINGBABY
@LOLKINGBABY 8 жыл бұрын
+Haloruler64 I think he's referring to lift off decel not braking, with a load on all 4 tires, they decel as a unit and slow down the vehicle instead of having 2 wheels freely turning with no load. Load in this case meaning drive line not weight

FCFordLord Where do you live? It depends on your climate and road conditions. I get at most 3 years out of my winter tires. They really make a huge difference especially when temps drop like -30 -40 C. Winter tires are softer to compensate for the cold and have larger threads to really dig in the snow. They are already on steel rims, it takes me 20 min to change them all in my driveway. Not only do they provide extra grip in the lower temps but it also saves your nice (more silent) summer tires and mags from all the salt, sand, gravel, hidden curbs (and shovel dings...) Maybe you are lucky to get by with all seasons but here it's just not enough.

i drive an 2015 a4 in st catharines near niagara falls. winter tires are the ultimate solution but my car does well enough with all seasons if i focus and dont drive like a maniac. cornering is easily as good with slow speeds cause of the power to the rear wheels but braking is compromised on all seasons.

My dad had a 4wd Jeep Wagoneer back in the 60's - It came in handy during Chicago's 1967 blizzard which dumped over 2 feet of snow in 24 hours. Cars were stuck all over the roads. But with 4wd, the deep, slippery snow was noooooo problem! No, the problem was, there were cars stuck or abandoned all over the place and he was trapped on the highway waiting for all the other cars to move.

It's important to know all AWD systems are NOT the same. Some systems are FWD bias, 50 50 split, RWD bias and some even don't kick in until slippage is detected. That's why it's important to look these things up before jumping on a car because it's advertised to have "AWD".

Awd Systems react according to where the slippage or loss of traction is so even if most of the torque goes to the Front, still distributed everywhere.

People need to remember AWD doesn't keep you from going off of the road; it helps you get back on. Definitely should have winter tires in that environment regardless of what you drive.

Most often you see 4WDs and AWDs off the road because people don't seem to grasp the concept that their lifted truck, suv, and their 4WD and AWD isn't going to help them stop once they get going 60mph on the ice. Tires aren't the most important, the moron driver is the most important.

Thanks for the info. I just bought a Rogue, and decided to go for the front-wheel drive and began wondering if AWD was better choice, even though I don't go off-roading all the time. It only snows here like once every 2 years or so. I don't want to replace all four tires simultaneously either. It can still pull a light-duty trailer, fairly easy (Yeah, I decided to get a Rogue instead of a Frontier because Frontiers got about as bad gas mileage as a Titan, and I don't need all that extra horsepower all the time.)

No, it is not safer , but it will drive forwards in snow/mud for the same set of tires when compared with a 2 wheel drive. It will not brake better, and it will not go round a corner in snow or mud as this is a function of the tire traction. (You can modify the behaviour of the cornering but gentle use of the gas peddle - front wheel drive understeer, rear wheel oversteer and 4 wheel drive tend to be neutral - but ultimately - you will go sideways just as easily in ANY configuration of drive). So get the correct tires - snow tires are cheaper than 4 wheel drive and are safer because they help you go (much better than 4 wheel drive) AND they help you stop and go round corners.

If only AWD buyers would understand this. Just attempted to get up to 2 different ski resorts today but due to pass closures and spun out cars we turned around. 4hrs of driving, no boarding. What we did get a eye full of was numerous SUV and trucks freshly spun out in the ditches. All appears to have all season looking tread for the ones I could actually see while passing. All these people slowing down traffic because they believe they bought a AWD winter weapon. All they got was a vehicle that will help them start a little quicker than FWD but then be completely less safe as they think their vehicle's AWD is still helping them. It's non stop, smart people in other walks of life are constantly spitting out stupidity like "well you got AWD, so you ready for the snow". I gladly tell them I will take my FWD family van with Blizzaks over my AWD RAV4 with All Seasons for paved snowy conditions. Who cares how quick you can start if you can't stop. AWD + Winter Tires = Best winter paved driving.

And this is exactly what Consumer Reports posted in their testing! AWD is great on the take-off but will make little difference on stops & turns unless you have good winter tires!
@rangerover06sc
@rangerover06sc 2 жыл бұрын
@@45eno Well cares how well your car brakes and turns if you can start. AWD doesn't just get you going faster. It will get you going in situations where 2wd won't. Especially if you have no traction control. Because as soon as one wheel breaks traction you have no wheel drive. You can compensation for the braking/handling disadvantage by driving slower/smoother and by increasing your stopping distance. You can't compensate for not going anywhere because your stuck because only have 2wd. Winter tires will never be a cheaper alternative to awd/4wd because winter tires simply do not do what awd/4wd do. Having driven suvs on winter tires, there is a huge difference in your ability get going between 4wd/awd and 2wd. To the point where you have lots of wheel slip or you have none.

The other thing I was going to mention is that all wheel drive really should be for people who are willing to spend a little extra money on the maintenance. If you don't want to spend too much on maintenance then I would recommend that you just drive carefully and stick to your front wheel drive for saving gas. Just me personally I prefer to have switchable all wheel control

they may go better in rain or snow. but they don't stop any better.you can't "drive like mad" scotty. i have driven in northern canada, mayby half a million kms. my honda accord is great,for this.i perfer to lower my tire pressures ,24lbs.seems best for me. i have never been stuck. 4 studed tires is a lot more cost effective than all wheel drive. hope this is usefull.

Scotty, love your channel. I own a Subaru Forester, and love it. Subaru, unlike the other companies, build AWD into ALL their vehicles - it is not an afterthought. The engine compartment is VERY clean. Oil filter right on top of the engine. Very clean underneath. I would say they stand out in that regard - I would maintain that Subaru's do not have some of the problems, such as accessiblity to transmission and engine parts that the other cars have. I know several other people who own Subarus and love them, no problems even with high-milage ones.

I've been driving Honda CR-V's, Element and HR-V and even a first gen Ford Escape and I've learned a lot over the years. First, Scotty is putting all of his eggs in one basket. Not all AWD's are alike and should be examined separately and Scotty is wrong on some of his generalizations. 1. Subaru has the AWD engaged all the time and wears out tires faster than the Honda AWD system because the Honda system is FWD until the front tires spin. In my case, this only happens in the worst part of the winter months so my tires on the CRV and Element have lasted just as long as the ones on my wife's Accord which is only FWD. 2. Always have good tires on all four corners of your AWD car. They react together for best performance. Rotate all of them on a regular basis and replace all four when needed. An AWD vehicle with slick tires is actually more dangerous in slick situations than a FWD or RWD vehicle. The 2WD vehicle will usually slide in only one direction when it loses grip. The AWD vehicle will do "360's" with no warning. I speak from experience and I've driven on freezing rain, 20" fresh snow and 20" solid ice (melted snow that froze solid at sunset), in deep ruts, mud and anything else you can imagine. I will always have an AWD vehicle in my fleet. Maintenance tip: keep the rear diff fluid in Honda AWD systems changed regularly. It is like ATF and it does have a limited life span. I change the one quart capacity in my Honda's @ 30K miles even though the owner's manual recommends 60K miles -- cheap insurance.

How about the HRV on snow ?
@boomerguy9935
@boomerguy9935 11 ай бұрын
@@gabrielpanebianco6542 The Honda HRV, CRV and Element all handle/grip well in the snow as long as you have good tires and ground clearance. However, I feel that Subaru does have the advantage with its symmetric AWD. Since I only have seasonal snow with tolerable winters, I prefer the Honda's advantage of less maintenance and better gas mileage. If I lived in more extreme areas, such as Minnesota, upstate NY or Alaska, I would probably go with the Subaru's system. However, my experience in owning Subaru and Honda cars gives the overall quality advantage to Honda.
