This video is extremely well-done with so many aspects covered so you have a new sub in me. I just thought that I'dd add another giagntic advantage to the R7-7800X3D... The fact that it is a first-gen AM5 part. If the longevity of AM4 is any indicator, the AM5 platform will still be relevant in 2030 with several drop-in CPU upgrades available. Meanwhile, the Intel LGA1700 platform is on its last legs. This means that any upgrade from the i7-14700K will require a new motherboard no matter which direction you go (unless you get something like an i9-14900K I suppose). Even if you already have an LGA1700 motherboard, the i7-14700K makes little to no sense because its performance advantage over even an i7-12700K is negligible and isn't worth the asking price. Having said that, if you have an i7-12700K, you're still more than fine for gaming anyway. This makes the i7-14700K a completely useless product as people building a new PC or performing a platform upgrade should only be looking at AM5 while people already on LGA1700 have no need for a "14th-gen" CPU upgrade as the upgrade won't make any significant difference.

Great point that I should have mentioned in my video … longevity is a big advantage for AM5. Will pin your comment since I didn’t mention it. Thanks!

@deheimer 4 ай бұрын
Wouldn't go that far buddy. There are plenty of people who upgrade well after 3-4 years of usage, in that case, really doesn't make a difference between a 14700k or a 7800x3d. One thing I know for sure is how inferior 7800x3d is at productivity tasks compared to the 14700k . As far as gaming, 7800x3d is the winner but, at a resolution like 4k, it's not gonna make a difference at all. So you can't say going for 14700k is useless haha. Highly depends on the use case and planning of each individual.
@blackbirdpctech

@@deheimer I don't recall saying in the video or comments that the 14700k is useless, I did however state that I think it's over priced relative to the competition. I disagree that longevity doesn't make a difference ... even if someone decides to upgrade after 4 years, if they choose AM5 as their platform they will have multiple CPU upgrade paths without having to upgrade their entire system whereas if you are on LGA1700 you won't. I agree on the performance differences at 4K and benefits for productivity tasks ... I showed this with actual data in the video.

@@deheimer For the relatively tiny number of people who do productivity workloads (compared to the legions of gamers), the 14700K isn't a good choice either. If you're using a part to make money with productivity, the cost no longer matters because performance = profit. In that case, you're looking at something like an R9-7950X or Threadripper, not an i7, buddy.

Just bought a 7800X3D a couple weeks ago, paired it with a Aorus X670 Elite AX and G.Skill 6000 at cl30 ram. This replaced my 5900x system. On the titles that take advantage of the 3D cache, the difference is incredible, on titles that do not use the 3D cache, it's still a little better, smoother gaming maybe than the 5900x but not much difference. Of course, the 5900x will blow the 7800X3D in multi core CPU intensive workloads due to it's 4 extra cores. But for gaming the 7800X3D is pretty impressive. I could not believe how much better MSFS-2020 is on the 7800X3D and this is in VR using a Reverb G2 at high resolutions, even a Quest-3 via link cable with some tweaks can be simply gorgeous and perform way better than I thought possible (oh yeah, GPU is a Gigabyte 4090 Gaming OC). I love this system and man oh man, if you have game titles that take advantage of the 3D cache, you can expect up to 50% better performance over a 5900x. :)

This shouldn't be a wake-up call for Intel (they already know) but for the people buying their products. The uninformed buyer thinks that because Intel is more expensive, it has to be better. It's at least 2 years since Intel has been competitive, especially on laptops because of the far superior efficiency of AMD CPUs and more performant integrated GPUs. This, however, hasn't stopped more than 80% of buyers to pay more for less. AMD has even lost market share in the past 2 years, which shows just how well the Intel marketing is working.
@blackbirdpctech
@blackbirdpctech 5 ай бұрын
I agree and it also shows the power of brands ... in general people tend to be very brand loyal and Intel built a brand that people recognize so they feel "safe" buying it, even when the data shows that it's not the best choice.

I don't blame the people. I'm from India and I have been watching Intel inside ads for the last 30+ years on TV. I'm yet to see an AMD ad. I came to know about Ryzen in 2019 when I was planning to build a new PC and started to Google & KZbin to understand what's on offer in the market. Most average consumers just get a pre-built or whatever fits their budget as per shop owner recommendations. And most shops recommend Intel CPUs.

I disagree. You have to keep in mind that a lot of people use their PC for more than just gaming. That said, with the 7800x3d you're sacrificing a lot in terms of productivity performance, and even boot speed, for a marginal improvement in gaming. So it's really a matter of preference. You can't go wrong with either. AMD has come a long way but I don't think they will cut into Intel until they create an all-around better chip.

Current working with a 10850k & 1080ti & have debating on upgrading for a bit. Leaning towards getting the 7800x3d as the performance difference between 7000 & 9000 doesn't seem like enough of an improvement to justify the cost difference.

I'm working on a video now comparing the 9700X to the 7800X3D ... I think the mainstream/large tech KZbinrs were wrong ... this chip is pretty amazing ... they simply don't know how to use it properly. I spent a few days optimizing it and I plan to share what I learned in the video ... this doesn't require sophisticated bios tweaks. So before making your decision I would recommend waiting to watch the video ... I was on vacation last week so this was delayed and I really wanted to get it right, so the benchmarks will be done in a few days (and shared with BPT members) but the video will be released next week (on Friday).

@@blackbirdpctech Interesting. I'll definitely have to check out the video once it's up. Not in a rush to upgrade anyways. Yeah I think a lot of the issues with the mainstream reviews so far have been done on the current version of Windows 23H2. It's interesting but the newer version of Windows also significantly improves the performance of the 7000 series too, so unless you are comparing to Intel CPU's it won't make any difference (maybe 1-2% in favor of the 9000 chips). So I am doing my testing on the current version of Windows so I can show what the other tech KZbinrs missed ... the relative difference between the 7800X3D and 9700X will stay the same with the newer version of Windows however relative to Intel chips it will improve significantly (I will have to re-run those). I will put the summary benchmark results in a post later this week ... this is why I don't like day 1 reviews, you are in a rush and don't have time to really test the CPU before publishing your video.

So disabling Resizable Bar raises the CPUs 1%lows from 124fps to 256fps but hurts the GPU making it the bottleneck with 89%. For fps games is it not better to be cpu bottlenecked and not GPU bottlenecked so as to eliminate system latency? Or is it more important to play with higher 1% lows? Please reply at your convenience. I found these results to be interesting findings.

Kind of misleading when you say "7800X3D is the winner" when gaming performance is better but by marginal single digit percent on some games and even losing on others. Meanwhile on the application side of things ALL tests show around 200% better performance for Intel. To be clear...you won't notice any difference gaming but will definitely notice a huge improvement on application workloads and multi-tasking. The real winner is Intel.
@blackbirdpctech
@blackbirdpctech 3 ай бұрын
The great thing about generating data is that you can use it to support your recommendations ... you don't have to base it on an opinion. When you look at the gaming performance the 1% lows, which is something most people will notice, are significantly higher with the 7800X3D. This is in addition to the averages that are not insignificant (>5%). Then when you include cost this advantage increases further. So while you are correct in saying that applications run better on the 14700K (as I stated in my video), it is inferior in gaming and not by a small margin. And yes, you will definitely notice the increase in 1% lows so no, the real winner is the 7800X3D. That said the 14700K is a great chip, it's simply priced poorly ... if Intel dropped the price by $50 then it would be much more competitive in gaming efficiency. I would also recommend the 14700K over the 14900K given the recent instability issues.

Hey Matt, I have a question. Have you used modern AMD and Intel CPU's extensively over a long period of time? Not just benchmarking. As you know I game, but I also do video editing and various productivity activities for work/hobbies. I chose to go with a xx700 series Intel CPU, because I thought it might be a better all-around CPU. But, now I'm thinking I may have made a mistake (and I'm running 64GB of awesome RAM, so I won't be switching, I don't think). Question; have you noticed any significant differences between the 2 platforms in terms of stability? Have you found them to be equally stable or do you have a preference when using your computer for various activities? Thanks!

That is a great question but damn it’s loaded. I’ve used both chips extensively for gaming and work. The advantage for stability used to be with Intel but now my work stations are 7950X’s … AMD has really come a long way. For gaming the 7800X3D is an obvious choice and I’ve never had any stability issues with it. I had some issues with my 5900x and 5950x systems from prior gen, but nothing crazy. The 14900k is a killer gaming chip but it’s super inefficient … unless you enforce all Intel limits in bios. I don’t think you made a mistake because early in the 7000 series release AM5 had some teething problems, especially with memory, but that appears to have been resolved. The reality is both chips are great but I would definitely give AMD the edge at the moment.

I own both systems (14700K and 7800X3D) and I also notice that the Intel system never hesitates or lags when browsing (response is always INSTANT), and it seems that the same use case on the 7800X3D has input lag. Heck, sometimes on the AMD system, even creating a comment like this on KZbin sometimes reminds me of the days of 300 baud BBS's, and I never get that experience on any of the 10th+ gen intel systems I have access to. You're not alone in feeling this. It would be nice if someone could quantify this and figure out why the AMD system has this lag, especially for web browsing. (Both systems have 64GB DDR5 and high end video cards (3080TI / 7900XTX)). It might have something to do with the Intel system having 20 (or more on the14th gen i9) actual cores to work on Edge's threads and the AMD only having 8, but that's speculation. It's obvious that the extra cache on the 7800X3D isn't doing anything for web browsing.

That being said, my cooling bill for my house may make up for that fairly quickly, lol...

@blackbirdpctech 3 ай бұрын
It's definitely valid to consider the cost of the motherboard and RAM. If you look at the latest generation Z790 boards (the ones that launched with 14th gen CPUs) they are very similar in price to the X670e board (i.e. an MSI X670e ACE vs an MSI Z790 ACE MAX). Early on when AM5 launched the only option was X670e which was/is expensive but now the B650e options have significantly lowered the cost of entry. For RAM you can extract max performance from AM5 CPUs with 6000MT/s CL30 whereas for Intel you should go faster with something like 7200MT/s CL34 or better. You also have two dimm motherboard options for Intel but unfortunately those options don't really exist for AMD (i.e. the Apex). The only chips from Intel that I wouldn't recommend for gaming are the i9's given the recent issues ... the 14700K is a better option IMO.

It's impossible to target exactly what the issue is but if you increased the voltage too much while overclocking then it's possible you could have permanently damaged the CPU, motherboard and/or RAM. Best case scenario is that you damaged the RAM, so I would start there and try replacing it to see if the error code goes away. If you haven't already done so then make sure you clear the CMOS ... that should be your new starting point. When you get a stable baseline setup in Bios make sure you save it before messing around. If it's not the RAM then you will need to check the CPU ... only way to really do that is to replace it. If it's not the CPU then it will likely be the motherboard, which is obviously worst case.

No problem ... my last video compared DDR4-3600 CL14 vs DDR5-7200 CL34 on Z690 boards with a 14900K (I used the exact same CPU and GPU for both to eliminate any performance impact due to the CPU or GPU, and I also enforced all Intel limits on the CPU on both boards). It is amazing just how poorly most motherboard vendors configure Intel CPU's with Auto settings ... they basically let it overheat and cripple the performance ... it's remarkably stupid. I need to play around more with the 14700K to see how I can extract max performance per watt.

@@blackbirdpctech I ran that 12700k+MSI Z690-A Pro D4 about 1 year without any crashes or what so ever weird behaviour. 1.18V sometimes had some hiccups but that 1.19V was really the lowest I would call stable, since overnight test marathons didn't crash etc. RAMTest (Karhu software, from RAM OC stability) and plenty of other benches used, the most common ones. Now throwing in Teamgroup T-Create 5600 C40 (the jedec spec, Hynix M most likely, 10layer PCB) and see what Z790 Tomahawk can do, goal is that 7200 C34 but time will tell. Running with 12700KF this time... Unless getting a 7800X3D and a mobo. In my previous comment, the ram I had was cheap 3200 C15-15-15 TridentZ 2x16. Paid 400eur for a 128Gb (8x16 kit) :D then sold 2x16 pieces to friends cheap - OFC I said there's no warranty coz the kit is split. GSkill demands whole kit for RMA if even a single stick has issues.

@@blackbirdpctech Der8auer had some nice older review of a 13900K UV&UC vs 5800X3D, and in his results Intel yielded with 3.11fps/W and AMD 2.65fps/W - Sure a 7800X3D is quite different story, no doubt on that. I have to say would be really interesting video topic to see a 13700k-14900k (some with 8 P-cores) to be undervolted with stock allcore-frequency... And then this is compared to a 7800X3D which has some -20-30 CO aswell. Can't comment too much on the PBO, you do your's. :D Mby I would keep it OFF since Intel's frequencies are not touched either. But have ram something 7000MHz on Intel and some ~6000 C30 on AMD.

@blackbirdpctech
@blackbirdpctech 4 ай бұрын
Absolutely, something like the NH-D15 can cool it effectively. The mistake a lot of people make with Intel chips is to install them and leave their motherboard settings on Auto, which typically expands the power limit beyond reasonable levels. So if you go into your motherboard Bios and enforce Intel limits or even set a temperature limit, the performance impact will be minimal and your temps will be great. The motherboard vendors do an injustice to these chips in the way they setup their Auto features on their boards.

That hasn’t been able to explain the recent sudden shift of user bases from AMD Ryzen to Intel Core according to Pudget recent survey 2024. The shift happened when core 13 series were introduced. Not sure the main reason. All I know is that Intel CPU had significant advantages in video editing due to the quick sync which does have noticeable differences. For gaming, FPS 150 vs 160? Who cares.

Intel XTU has the same options as Bios but allows you to test changes much more rapidly. Software like Hydra is a great way to optimize an AMD system and again, it’s much more efficient and effective versus manually making changes in bios. I always recommend testing in software before applying in bios, but by all means if you want to waste your time making changes in bios, rebooting and testing then you do you.

I don't even know why you'd get this over a 13700K at least you're saving money the difference between the two is within a margin of error. There is a significant benefit at 1440p as well ... at 4K the performance is dominated by the GPU, so the CPU in most games doesn't matter as much (with high graphics settings). I would only consider paying more for the 14700K if you are editing videos and/or streaming while gaming.

@@S1N1CAL I covered applications in my video but when it comes to games, most are still not well optimized to leverage more than a few cores ... this is one of the reasons why Intel is dropping hyperthreading on their next gen chips. The reason I specifically use video editing as a good use case for the 14700K is that the Intel iGPU can be leveraged by software like Adobe Premiere to speed up the process. The 7800X3D has an iGPU as well however Intel has done a good job paying other companies to favor their features.
