Yesssssss!!!! So true. I know people who couldn’t read certain books because of the font size. So honestly it does make it accessible and that’s good!!
@kbhasi4 жыл бұрын
I agree! I seem to experience more friction when reading with serif fonts, probably due to my past influences, I prefer to read with sans-serif fonts. If I have the option to sideload fonts, I use "Andika Ink", otherwise, I use whatever sans-serif font the reading app offers. For example, the paperback edition of one of my current reads as of posting this reply, "Flember: The Secret Book", is typeset in "Goudy Old Style" according to MyFonts when I loaded a photo from the author's Twitter into their search, but the Kobo EPUB (Kindle format too) doesn't support embedded fonts, which is fine outside of the context of my research, but I read it using "Droid Sans" on the Kobo tablet app, and "Andika Ink" on my Kobo Aura, which is my temporary e-reader as my Likebook Mimas is still out for repair. It's… a bit of an interesting experience, but nonetheless not one of the main reasons why I'm stuck with e-books.
@wgpodcasts59214 жыл бұрын
I have to say, my Kobo has saved me so much money. I just download books from my laptop. Also, I have about 20 or more books saved to my e-reader. I can read whatever I want, wherever I want. I definitely agree that these are great purchases for avid readers.

Exactly. Kobo also links to public libraries in Canada so I just borrow books straight from the library. It’s so easy and I find it’s so much more portable than a massive textbook.

Benefits I see to an e-reader: - gain of space: I can't afford to build an extra room for my library, which is getting jammed - weight and space: like mentioned, you can pop an e-reader in a bag easy, not so much with some books (especially the ones I tend to read) - reading in the dark: when your loved one goes to bed earlier, you don't have to keep the lights on to read - translation: I speak and write in Spanish, but not fluently enough that I don't need a dictionary. I can have a built-in dictionary with the e-reader, read in a language which isn't my native language, and get better at it What an e-reader can never replicate from the physical book reading experience: a book engages all of our senses: sight, smell, touch and sound - sight: the colored cover, the grain of the paper, the color of the paper, the choice of font the editor made, stains made in the book (whether a drop of rain or some ketchup) --> with an e-reader choices are quite limited - smell: a book smells, brand new it will smell of ink and glue, and old it can smell a bit moldy; if it has a leather cover, it will smell like leather --> your e-reader shouldn't have a smell - touch: the paper, whether fine, rigid, with grain or smooth - the cover, protected, paper, coating, embossed, hard or soft cover etc... the weight, light or heavy --> the feel of an e-reader can be quite cold - sound: when closing the book, the turning of the pages, the sound your finger makes on the page --> no sound from an e-reader, unless the pressing of a button counts So while I am all for an e-reader and think it is a wonderful invention, we are sensorial creatures and will be attached to the physicalness of the book - in my opinion.

You've definitely convinced me to consider getting an e-reader. Toronto's public library has a great online selection of books, so if I had an e-reader I won't even need to pay for a lot of my books! I also have a very cluttered room partially due to my big book collection, making me weary of buying physical books as of late. If I had an e-reader, I wouldn't have to worry about that. Cheers dude

I’m so glad! TPL has an amazing selection, but the wait times are a little long. But I’ve saved so much money just by borrowing from the library and Toronto Public Library has almost every book you could want. One thing neat about ereaders, I think, is simply the technology. Until relatively recently the technology in regard to the printed word has changed little in hundreds of years. On the other hand, ereaders are a jump in the evolution of the printed word. Every time I turn on my ereader it is as if I am looking over Gutenberg's shoulder when he used movable type for the first time. I don't think we appreciate that. I love the printed word, but my shelf space is at a premium. Aa a lover of books, I appreciate my Kindle Oaais and my regular books that I can, YES, hold in my hand, turn the pages, and smell. As far as the relevancy of traditional paper books I believe its gonna end up on the same path as video games. Most people will go to the convenience of digital books, those that do choose to buy physical would most likely had already had the digital version, compleating collections. Then there are the special edition books, and last but most obvious those that never moved away from physical books. And just like video games chose physical out of fear at any moment something could change or the companies with all ur books up and disappear, especially if you "borrow" books

Will e-readers take over? You said no, but the land scape is slowly changing. People don’t have the room for tons of books and the newer generation of consumers are not so hung up on nostalgia of the physical copy. Also, in our germ phobic society, the idea of one device housing thousands of books that nobody has physically touched can be enticing. The idea of transporting ten books at once with out carrying ten physical copies is genius. While I don’t think books will disappear completely, any time soon, I can see production become far less in generations to come.

Hi, hope you are doing well. I have a question about the difference between two e-readers Kobo Clara HD and Kindle Paperwhite 10th gen. I see that people are more recommending Kobo than Kindle and that makes me a little confused. One point is that I don't use any e-reader in my life and I want something that is more convenient and easy to use. So, what is your recommendation for me? Thank you. Tahmid
@MateenManek4 жыл бұрын
Hi! To be honest, I'm not sure what would be the best for you. The reason why I chose the Kobo over the Kindle is that I was able to borrow books from the Library. The Kindle did not allow that feature in my country, so it made the most sense. I've had the Kindle a while ago and loved it, but honestly they're both amazing devices!

Dear Santa, please talk the companies and make them produce some 8" and 10" color e-ink android devices. Thanks! I have the latest Kindle Paperwhite + a light 8" reader ("InkBook") + the 13" Onyx Boox Max. They all are great, but a big game-changer would be a device that's not only great for reading books, but also magazines, pdf's and non-fiction textbooks with illustrations (should be great for students and all people who love to learn). All this only really works with color + size. The upcoming 6" devices with color are a start, but the future is probably a lot more exciting!
@MateenManek4 жыл бұрын
That would definitely be amazing. I used to read comics on my tablet, but it was so hard to read and I had to keep zooming in. I think it would be great to have a device like this

So what's overall better? A Kindle or Kobo e-reader?
@MateenManek4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I haven’t tried the new Kindles so I can’t say for sure. But both have their advantages and disadvantages. For me, being able to borrow books from the library was a big one, and in my country that’s only possible with a Kobo. So the choice was a little easier for me.

Don't we get bored after reading a lot of books on e-reader.... It would be the same hold and look... While in physical books, we are always exited to have new looks of it etc.... What do u say....?
@MateenManek4 жыл бұрын
I mean eBooks don't have that physical-ness to an actual book, but I still think it's nice to read eBooks because of convenience. Also, you can view the cover on the standby screen and the fonts change depending on the publisher's settings :)

What I do is get a really nice edition of a particular book for the tactility and its aesthetics, and then download the epub and read it on an e-reader when I am travelling around.

It's also perfect if you're trying to pursue a more minimalist lifestyle. You won't have to deal with the clutter of books you'll barely touch again.

Are e books as much or less compared to traditional books?
@MateenManek4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the book. I've had ebooks that were $2 cheaper than the paperback. I've had ebooks that were more expensive than the paperback (I ended up buying Sapiens because the eBook was actually more expensive). But I've also had eBooks that were $10 less than the actual book. The prices are set by the publishers (I believe) and it really depends on how they set it.

Pls be so kind and explain - as I have no idea about kindle - the difference between kindle and kobo and where/how do I get these 'books' onto my device and do I need internet connection to read them? Thank you.
@MateenManek4 жыл бұрын
Kindle is owned by Amazon whereas Kobo is owned by Rakuten. Both need internet connection to download books but not to read them. They get stored on the ereader. You could also connect your eReader to your computer and download books from there too if internet is an issue. Most of the time the book is automatically downloaded depending on how you get it. But it’s super straightforward. If you have a Kindle, you buy directly from Amazon. If you have a Kobo, you buy directly from Kobo. You can also download third party books and put them on your Ereader. Hope that helps!!

I get you. I’ll be honest, I’ve had a few minor issues but kobo support fixed them. But I’d try them out if you can and decide. Also see which features are better for you. If you shop mostly on Amazon, stick to Kindle. If you are open to shop elsewhere, maybe Kobo? Sorry I know my answer isn’t that great.

My question: is it worth buying a more expensive e-reader?
@jamesatipton24324 жыл бұрын
I have 4 Kindles. Three are operational and in constant use. I have Fire HD and 2 Paperwhites. The Fire is not best for reading, but has some advantages if reading a book with illustrations, maps artwork, ect The Paperwhites are very good for just reading . The problem with Kindles of any sort is their parent company of Amazon which pretty much dictates what you will read. If I had to start with E-books again I would not patronize Amazon. I hope that in the future legislation will solve Amazon dictatorial policies.
