Makes me think. I had the pleasure of owning and driving a Volvo XC70 D5 from 65000 to 130000 miles (not a direct comparison but a reasonable 'same stable view if you like').. It never let me down, yes it was a bit short of modern day tech and the steering was annoyingly vague to the point of being tiring, so..... I convinced myself that I need a change, a sharper drive and some modern day gizmos (and wanted to return to a higher driving position). I part-exchanged it for Range Rover Evoque Puretech SD4. Well the Evoque its lovely to drive capable and also an unreliable money pit. If I had kept the Volvo, it will still be running (I guess for another 100k), it would have been much more useful and done everything that is required. Conclusion: If I had kept it, I would have at least £22k more in the bank and a very good albeit not perfect car. The Range Rover is nice.... but not that nice and I think in time I will probably return to an old Volvo.

I got my 2001 v70, with 192,000 miles, for free - my brother gave it to me - he was going to junk it. So far, I’ve replaced the radiator, AC compressor, water pump and timing belt, all ignition coils, heater core, battery, control arms, ball joints, all sway bar links, rear calipers, all brake rotors and pads, struts, shocks and all suspension springs. After first replacing the radiator, I was hooked, radicalized, I love my Volvo.

I make you right on all points. We have a 02 Model Cross Country Volvo and it's done 250,000 + miles. Still going strong even though at the moment it has spent a few days in hospital having a starter motor/gaiter and transmission fluid and a fuel pipe fitted. Hasn't cost a penny since we bought it, only the usual. This is only a small hurdle but like you say, these cars can go on for years and will outlast many other cars. I love your video as it isn't pompous, it's earthy, and quite frankly I find your honesty refreshing and your little quips funny. Keep up the good work and thanks for reminding me what a great car we have.

Turning circle is huge, back seats are a bit too small, and some of the “fancy” bits started acting up. But it always drove smooth, was surprisingly zippy if you pushed it, and was dependable as hell. Great first car (though a bit of a chick non-magnet...)

Thanks for sharing your experience with the V70. We recently inherited a 2002 V70 with 85,000 miles on the odometer. It's a pleasure to drive on the freeway or open road, but not so great in the city, not nearly as agile as my 2002 Honda CR-V. But thinking about a road trip, possibly up the California coast to Oregon, choosing the Volvo's a no-brainer, especially considering the sleeping room with the back seats down.

One of the best youtube recommendations, I like your reviews very much. Being a proud owner of a 2007 S60 D5 with 180k+ miles on the clock, a few tips for possible future Volvo owners: engine mounts don't like harsh roads, next month I'll be replacing them for the third time. Steering angle sensor dies after ~10 years almost in every S60/V70 from that era - don't go cheap on it, your life depends on it (DSTC needs it), you can change it at home in 30 minutes but it needs software calibration so you have to go to a mechanic either way. Mass airflow sensor error is indicated more often with age, nine times out of ten just the DPF is clogged - step on it on the morotway to clean it. Keep the good reviews coming!

I’m in the trade, modern cars are pretty poor, don’t waste your money on new cars by all major brands as the quality and longevity is no longer there. Best cars new are Honda, Subaru, Lexus. Forget all the rest. Buying used from over 10 years is the best bet as long as you seek genuine one owner, full service history and non abusive driving. I’ve driven every make today and the quality is not in new cars plus the amount of electronics is staggering. Personally I drive a mint 2004 V70 20T I got through the trade and after driving everyday for 16 months I’ve never been to a workshop outside of regular servicing. Sadly I can’t say that for hundreds of modern vehicles! Even the modern Volvo cars are nowhere as reliable. It’s just an expensive brand now with overpriced fancy looking junk.

You are right, people do judge a person on their car and even I subconsciously do it. I am a Volvo man myself and my parents have had Volvos for years. My dad bought the family our first Volvo back in 1989 and had it for 12 years until it failed an MOT on rust. It was a 1983 beige 5 door Volvo 340DL. Had an 2002 s60 D5 SE manual, for 10 years. Best vehicle I ever owned. Only sold because I moved overseas. Really economical mpg. Black leather interior, with the most comfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. Very quiet and super reliable. Very heavy front end, so steering/suspension/wheel bearings will likely be worn, especially if the previous owner liked hard cornering. Get a cheap old one, and renew as many steering/suspension components as possible. Following that, get aftermarket polyurethane bushes on the wishbones as it improves the handling, and also reduces future wear and tear on the steering/suspension/wheel bearings. Once this is done, drive it in a stately fashion, befitting a luxury saloon, rather than a sport saloon, and it will give you trouble free motoring forever.
