I got behind the wheel of a Volvo for the VERY first time and I came away with mixed feelings. This Volvo V70 from 2011 had a lot of pros but a few cons too which hopefully made this review an interesting watch. Let me know what you think down in the comments!

Had a V70 D5 and it did 235,000 miles. Utterly indestructible, never wanted anything except its normal service. Can't say that of any other car I've had. Very comfy, quite fast, economical for a 2.4, was quieter than the e-class Merc estate I had (ride not as good though). The interior design was good Swedish distinctive and cool. The pop up screen was silly but all the modern stuck on flat screens are stupid. Hard to fault these outstanding cars.

The only seats more comfortable than a Volvo are in the old and sadly discontinued Saab models. I run a V70 for long distances, because I can haul a ton of gear and get out after a day's driving raring to go, instead of grunting and groaning. I also run an XC70 with winter tyres (basically a 4WD jacked up V70) for when I go to my place in Sweden. I've owned Audi, BMW, Saab and countless others and nothing comes close as an overall combination of comfort, utility and safety. Some people don't realise that the 2 litre D3 V70 is surprisingly fuel frugal and very low (£30 a year) road tax. An inexpensive diesel tune improves engine response and fuel economy. For context, I also run a Land Rover and an Audi A5 3.0 TDI QUATTRO S LINE, but I spend far more time in the V70 because I prefer its comfort and flexibility.
@Luckywynne
@Luckywynne 9 ай бұрын
We also love our XC70 and have been spoiled by its comfort, sound system and reliability on long drives. I've been looking at Land Rovers as a second car, are there any that might match the Volvo in those areas?
@taranscott155
@taranscott155 9 ай бұрын
@@Luckywynne In a word, no. If you ask on the forums you will get a lot of fanboys telling you how awesome all things Land Rover are. Objectively, they are expensive to buy, expensive to own/maintain/run, but if you need something that is seriously good off-road and comfortable for long journeys then maybe the LR Discovery could be worth a look. If you don't intend doing any fairly serious off-road stuff you probably don't need one. Again, speaking objectively, Toyota Land Cruiser and Mitsubishi Shogun are both far nore reliable. I am generalising here, obviously. I won't ever buy another Land Rover. My next vehicle of that sort is likely to be a VW Touareg or Toyota Land Cruiser. The Touareg is lovely to drive for long distances and is surprisingly good off road. The Toyota will go absolutely anywhere, and get you back. Good luck !

I have driven a few of this gen. Volvos and noted some things: - when considering the 2.4 diesels, I would recommend to go for the AWD model instead of the FWD. Applies especially to the 2009+ two-stage sequential turbo engines, otherwise it's too easy to spin the wheels. - manual gearboxes got better after 2011 facelift, less woolly shifting action. 2011 also saw major overhaul for the Aisin 6-speed auto boxes, newer ones are smoother and more reliable. I vaguely remember the newer 2011+ 6-speed autos also using different oil, but don't quote me on that. - 2011 also saw the introduction of new reduced-stroke inline 5 engines, now 2.0 litre. I would avoid these until 2013, when the next iteration of 2.0 inline 5 engines arrived - 2013 brought last facelift to V70, new instrument cluster, improved 2.0 inline 5 engines and improved mapping for the 6-speed auto. This combo would be my pick for V70 from that gen. - 2014 brought new VEA inline 4 engines and while they are powerful and quite frugal, I remember endless EGR issues (part was redesigned several times) + issues with various leaks. On the plus side - new 8-speed Aisin auto box, unfortunately mated exclusively to 4-cylinder models, is great. As said, my pick would be 2013+ 2.0 inline 5 with 6-speed automatic, but decent ones are hard to find by now. Next would be 2.0 inline 4 D4 with 8-speed auto from the last production years. Regular maintenance is a must with these cars, walk away from any Volvo that has sketchy maintenance history. It's just not worth the effort, I learned this the hard way. Besides that, these are excellent long distance cruisers for families: reasonably quiet, comfortable suspension, good fuel economy, plenty of cargo space, good ground clearance and of course the seats. 🙂 Note that used Volvos tend to have much higher mileage compared to similarly sized competitors, at least in my area.

My XC70 is very similar, as a geriatric although I still like hooligan cars the Volvo is extremely practical. The satnav is very dated now (although mine has a new data disc) but it is great that you can leave it retracted. The turning circle is poor but it does not seem outrageous for a car of that wheelbase. I was a teenager when I first drove Volvo estates, they were not exciting then and mine is still not exciting now. What it is superb for though is doing the things an estate car should do, fetching and carrying in comfort without stress. FWIW my XC70 typically does about 35mpg with the same engine as that V70 but with the added weight and drag of the rear differential. I am not a lifetime Volvo fanboi but the longer I spend with mine the more I see that someone has thought about the design details.

Hi Lucy, I run a 2013 V70 with the D4 engine and manual gearbox. It has also been Polestar tuned to improve mid range performance. It is not a sprinter but it's not a sluggard either. The manual box means that I can have a few revs on before I launch and makes it surprisingly good for nipping into small gaps in traffic. No turbo lag. Top speed is a claimed 137mph although I've never had it that fast. Road tax is still only £35/year. (!) Short journeys I manage over 40mpg with a lot more on motorway runs. The pop up screen had disappeared by 2013 and replaced with an all pupose central screen. Overall I absolutely love it. It suits my lifestyle and my hobbies. The big heated leather seats are so comfortable that my wife says that she wishes that she could lift hers out and take it indoors. As you mentioned the turning circle is pathetic but I can live with that.

Hi! I have the same one, a D5 from 2011 also. Very happy with it, comfy, loading space, not to complicated to handle and everything works and stays in condition. So, no broken plastics, buttons, mid console etc. It happened to the previous model a lot more ( 2001-2008 ). Besides that, the D5 engine is one of the best Volvo ever built, smooth and powerful even with manufacturer specs. What I do not like is the behavior on the front suspension, bit sensitive but depends on the quality of the tyres nut even than on very low speed the car choose to run away to right or left. I changed the complete suspension and every part that is related to the steering behavior but more people noticed this issue over the year. On the highway this Swedish kind of tank is your best friend. 70 liters of diesel will bring me from my city in the Netherlands ( Den Bosch ) over the Austrian border with ease. Love that! Service the car well and it will service you for a long, very long time if you want. Believe me, Mercedes-Benz/BMW and especially Audi is lot more stress and money to maintain on the same level if you compare the costs.

Depends on your frame of reference for "boring". The V70's biggest crime is that it just does the job competently without any stand out "character traits". If it were a person it'd probably be the one you'd want in Government as they'd just get on with it, no fuss. It's biggest crimes are that among a lot of Volvo cognoscenti, its too much of a Ford and not enough of a real Volvo (unlike the previous gen P2 platform model) and that, to the populace at large, it's "just" an estate car and not an aspirational SUV.

Ant anstead said when he was in the armed response unit in the police they had BMW, Mercedes and Volvos for response vehicles and there was a rush to get the Volvo first. If you have children they are a great place to be. The engine block is large hence poor turning circle, it was the one of the few things I didn’t like. They are very much a family barge.
@ashleyweston5420
@ashleyweston5420 9 ай бұрын
Surprisingly the large engine isn't the issue with the turning circle. The S40/V50 has the same turning circle with a 4 or 5 cylinder engine and it's waaaay better then a V70. I think (but happy to be corrected) the V70 is engineered to have a poor steering lock to give the CV joints an easy time and last longer.

I had a 2010 V70 1.6 DRIVe here in Scotland not sure how much power it had not a lot but it was a great car for motorway driving and very economical it was a company vehicle as I worked for and Scandi outdoor clothing company at the time, it carried lots of kit in the back and sat on the motorway all day long at 70mph and returned lower 50s mpg easy , it never complained just did the work it was designed to do, it had an amazing sound system and those seats were typical Volvo comfortable, the car had a Volvo towbar fitted as we needed this to tow trailers to events and again the car towed a small 750kg trailer to corporate events, it was not a quick car but I loved it, the company then replaced it with an all singing all dancing Honda Accord estate with a 2.2 Diesel it was a more powerful car but was not anywhere near as capable or comfortable as the V70 which ate the miles with ease.

i have one of those, a xc70 d5 4wd, i was not a volvo fan either, i've been a merc/bmw dude for years, but what i've learned about the volvos having two of them is that they are cars you grow in to, when you start to use them on a daily basis you kinda start to appriciate all kind of little things you notice for being done well or things about it that do what they do especially well, one thing i like about the 70 series is that they dont try to make it sporty, its a family wagon version of a car thats only made to me luxurius, its soft, quiet and relaxing to drive, its more practical than about just anything and its not trying to be something else. mine is used as a family hauler for two kids and two dogs. and it does that job so well that we have kept on to it much longer than we ever planned to, and have no plans of letting it go just dont expect it to be a bmw, its not trying to be

As I've hit my 40's these have become really appealing, I don't really care about handling or 'performance' because we have speed limits and and ever increasing number of mobile speed traps showing up near to me. I don't want a BMW, Audi or Mercedes because they all. Overpriced and driven by the sort of shallow people who are trying to look flasher than they probably are. JLR stuff is just badly made garbage. The choice is either to go Japanese or for something like this. We currently have a 1st Gen XC60 with the D5 and it's done nearly 200,000 miles and passed its Mot this month with no advisories. We have an old Ford Focus also that is nearly dead, once that goes I will need to replace it with something cheap, reliable and big enough to carry an active family of four, camping gear, bikes and a dog around, something a bit nicer than the Ford's and Vauxhalls I've always had and I don't want anything on finance or a money pit so the V70 and V60 are top of my list at the moment. My father in law had the previous gen V70 and sold it with over 500,000 miles on the clock, traded in against a nearly new BMW 330D X-Drive M Sport Touring and he now wished he had kept the Volvo because it had already done its depreciating and caused him no bother at all. I'm also someone who doesn't mind not having electric seats, it's heavier, another thing to go wrong and slower to operate than a manual operation and realistically how often would I adjust them anyway as the main driver of my car? Seems pretty needless as an option.

Yes is not a very engaging car but trust me it can cruise at high speeds quite well. Ours has nearly 200k and yes I can see some of your points but it was a 2k car which required nothing but regular maintenance. Is just the car that every family should have as the base trips car and another to just cover all the other points like being quick and unreliable ahaha.

Well maintained V70s don't have a bad reputation for reliability and in my experience they are reliable. There's a lot worse cars you could buy than one of these. That said I would not entertain any cars with very high mileages. They are reliable cars but they don't last forever. The throttle response is %100 normal for a Diesel. If you want immediate crisp throttle response then buy the Petrol T5 engine version.
