"eye comfort" etc. would be worth a point - my eyes hurt after staring at a bright screen for too long. I use dark mode, blue light filter and reduced brighness but it isn't enough and terrible with direct sunlight (when traveling mostly through windows).

Excellent comparison. I have both an iPad and a couple of E ink tablets for both personal and work tasks. I continue to think of iPad and E ink as complementary to one another. If you can only afford one, then hands down get an iPad first. In fact, I would like to see E ink tablets get simpler and less expensive, while offering a full range of cloud features to be able to organize and move information around easily. And, of course, E ink is the most comfortable way to simply read books and documents in the digital world.

This is a fantastic review and comparison and I really appreciate you going into the details on why a normal comparison between these devices against something like an iPad just doesn't capture the whole picture and can give you misleading results. Personally I have, use, and love both kinds of devices, but not everyone can afford that and need to find the right one for them. Plug in what you need, be sensible about it & keep it movin' The construction is plastic but it's a sturdy piece. It has a single toggle switch & the swivel jacks are useful as well. Plugged in next to Tripp Lite Isobar takes some of these reviews with a pinch of sumthin' - does what it says & functions properly.Had for about a month. Perfect no complaints will update if anything changes.

Great review, one thing that I pay attention too is the weight of them also. So I have an iPad, weight near on 600grams. I also have a Galaxy Tab S8 with keyboard case, and that weighs a whopping 860grams. Neither of them are coming out for one handed reading are they? :D

Don't forget productivity as a category. The limitations of Eink create an experience (mostly) free of distractions. That is so important when doing productive reading and research. The iPad does not help you to concentrate for hours on a specific task.

But on the flip side, for certain things, the e-ink display can actually become a hinderance or annoyance. It's a very complex calculus to choose the right device between these two types! But this video gets into that a lot better than most others that I've seen, so that's a very good start.

Yes, agreed, but in this case I was going for iPads vs Boox devices, i.e. generally covering all sizes and spec variations. If battery is a big concern, 100% go eink! And there's a range of sizes for each, personallly I'm a bigger is better kinda guy!

Hello, unfortunately I've not reviewed the nova C. However I can tell you that the nova air is very good. And that I like colour eink. The only tradeoff is the size, think carefully, if you think you'll want to do long handwriting sessions maybe go for a bigger one.

One note isn't particularly used much on iPad. Apple pen is fantastic and no e-ink alternative exists as of today that can rival the speed and accuracy of an apple pen on an iPad Pro. I own one and I've test several e-ink tablets. e-inks truly suck when it comes to writing "period"

Do you use a digital planner? If so, do you use it on an iPad or on a Boox device? If you have an iPhone of course you can run the planner through an app like Goodnotes and review the planet on any ios devices. On a Boox, however, you have that eink feel but with an often confusing and bizarre cloud sync experience. I have two Boox devices and cannot properly sync my digital calendar between the two devices. The Boox interface is infuriating at times.

Just got my boox air 2 plus. I love how the bluetooth keyboard works great unlike the supernote. Little music when keyboard is first connected. When in a note you can choose another font or bold your font.

I really think that on the list should be battery-charge life, and the e-inks win that category. With all of the other benefits of the e-ink tablets and now with the recent release of the Boox Ultra Tab C, I think battery-charge life tips the scales for me towards e-ink over iPad. I say this as a massive Apple user. My main concern is integrating both systems. I'll probably end up using the iCloud calendar, notes, and reminders via the web interface on the Boox. I hope that's sufficient.

I cannot decide between buying an ipad or an onyxboox :/ I am a stem student, and I am looking for something to read textbooks and write down solutions for problems. Blue light is a con, however, fast pinch zooming seems like a big advantage because solutions of problems are sometimes quite lengthy. Also, my budget doesn't allow me to buy 13" inch e ink devices

If you already have a laptop I recommend to buy a eink with pencil. It lets you to study better and make notes over your documents.

I need something not really expensive to use as a mental dump during work and to annotate PDF for studying, with sync capabilities. The Boox looks really nice on paper (no pun intended) but I feel like I'm going to feel frustrated by the refresh rate and input lag when dragging handwritten notes or when using 3rd party apps (i.e. OneNote). Also lack of colour would be quite limiting. Tablets like an S6 Lite look much more versatile, but I feel like the battery life would not be great in comparison and I would have to manually turn the screen on everytime I need to visually source my notes while programming, thus making it frustrating too. I really am at a stall on what to buy!

Well you've set out your stall quite well there! Seems we're both very punny. Um, I think you have to accept that eink screens are different and so you need to use them differently. They're great for some things but not others, so you tend to just enjoy the bits they are good at and not get frustrated about them not doing the other stuff. That being said I've been typing into Excel on my tab Ultra C all day today and it have been amazing!

my Nova Air C has completely replaced the collage block in front of my keyboard. it's ON all day long - no worry's regarding battery life. I keep 3 main notes (daily/programming, 3th level support and meetings). if I have to take an other-topic note suddenly, I don't switch notebooks ... just write it down and later lasso it and move it to the correct notebook. and on my biweekly, 5h commutes to the headquarters, I have a handy and lightweight!!! e-reader. perfect solution for me.

I am so stuck. What I want: - to replace my planner and notebook - to have a nice and comfortable stylus (I don't enjoy how the Ax5 is shaped but I know other stylus work - Something to edit pdfs - something to send emails I am also looking at an iPad but I have a MacBook. I dont know if I want two powerful devices. But Supernote has been taking 3 months to ship their devices, Remarkable also does 100 days risk free. Sounds like you need a "powerful" device that can do a lot of things. For editing pdf and sending email alone I would say go for iPad. It's much more fluent and will let you Concentrate on the task instead of waiting for eink screen to refresh. Having a MacBook means notes and file syncing would be really easy if you choose to use apples own note app. If you buy a boox, your pdf goes to a cloud service, which might not be as seamless as apple. And price wise I think a used iPad might even be cheaper than the boox note air 2 or the supernote. I purchased rm2 and is returning it. I know supernote and boox is much more powerful than rm but still, eink refresh rate and slowness to turn pdf pages or load emails really affect the real productivity. I decide if I went to a life stage when I need to read a ton of academic papers I will buy a 13" eink. Other than that I would stick with pen and paper and iPad/MacBooks. I would buy eink without hesitation if I could drag around pdf pages or notes as quickly as on an iPad.

alone all the accidentally scribble strokes from touching the screen with your fingers when grabbing the pen (6:12), would be an exclusion factor for the iPad, when the main use case is note taking. plus the fact, that for all-work-day note taking, battery life is an important factor. because even sitting on my desk in front of my keyboard, I don't want to have an extra power cable going to my note taking device.

Never had any interest in tablets until I realized they make e-ink tablets. I love my kindle because it's so easy on the eyes. Having an entire tablet with full computing functionality with that beautiful screen sounds like a godsend. I'm planning on picking up the nova air c which has color as well, which seems pretty cool. I'd love to get away from my laptop and phone, and stick with a screen that doesn't destroy my eyes. An ipad seems entirely pointless to me. Why get one when I can just use my phone? Lots of emphasis gets placed on the writing aspect, but I never felt the need to write by hand. And for any other task that an lcd screen can do "better", I have my phone and laptop. For reading I have my kindle. The boox tablets seem like a perfect way to get the functionality of my phone and laptop, but without the harmful lcd screens. Seems like a no-brainer then to get one. Whereas the ipad still seems pointless to me.
