So EU4 has been out for 8 long years (even though they have literally flown by), and a ton of major DLC expansion packs have released in this time. I thought it was time to go through every piece of major EU4 DLC and rank them, talking a bit about them and basically quickly reviewing them in the process. Hopefully this will give you some idea of which expansion packs are worth buying, and which ones are not. A lot will depend upon which factions you like to play as, even though many of the DLCs also bring with them universal changes and additions.

My problem with Paradox DLCs policy is just that I don't know if the games are planned with all the content and then split into dlcs or if the dlcs are created afterwards by people having new ideas and implementing them.

No game is planned for 8-10 years of gameplay. I know people love to rag on Paradox. It's the cool thing to do. The truth however is the DLCs are the way Paradox supports their games for so much longer than most any other studio. They don't plan a game and then cut a bunch of stuff out to use as DLCs later. DLCs are evolutions of the game, continued support and features based on community feedback and how the game evolves over time. Everyone gets the free features which is great and the sale of the DLCs allows them to do that. If they didn't do this then PDX games would be like 95% of the rest, supported for a couple years then a sequel sold instead.

they are going to release a new DLC on the baltic and scandanavia soon a part of me hopes its the last one…but then, they might think of a new DLC in 2023 as well

@@Himmyjewett I honestly think CK3 is a product of its time, coming from someone who indulges in both publisher's games, there's no way Paradox could've thought of this before Activision did and I think everything before CK3 is legitimately just products that are created over-time.

I believe it has become part of the design philosophy. I experienced it with Stellaris. If the vanilla version is good, the additions have a value, all is well. But if Fans get the feeling too much is missing, this will cause trouble. I am unsure about CK3 at the moment, as it should be very good while I would miss some content I like in CK2. I'd didn't get it (yet). With Vic3... I have played Vic2 too little to feel I will like it. So not for me for now. The issues with Imperator Rome still sit in my bones. It is not so bad, but not so great either. It feels like wasted potential as the antique era is actually a great canvas for a grand strategy game. For now I keep playing mostly HoI4 and Stellaris.

@@AndysTake I am Russian, so Third Rome was really interesting for me. But in general Emperor is my favorite too

@@Gotmog-ij7qw I loved Third Rome because it really felt like the Orthodox factions got so much more to do, you know? Which I loved. Same with Emperor for the HRE, and I generally loved the Rule Britannia too because of the same reasons as Third Rome. Now we need a Giants of the North DLC for the Scandinavian factions ;)

I would say the dlcs for Eu4 adds so much that we take certain mechanics for granted. They do seem to be overpriced but it's better to have all of them than some of them because of how much it affects playing the game. They may not be flashy but they sure do a lot.

I agree, many of the DLCs add so much, and put together the game is so vastly different than when playing without it them :)

I am extremely new to the game but I already thought this would be the case, thats why I love the idea of their DLC subscription, since it can let you test all dlcs or be used as having all dlcs for a while

@@tim220502 The best thing you can do is to watch other people play. You can do alright by yourself but watching other people fully utilize the game mechanics will improve your game tremendously. You can always play smarter and not harder.

I would have put Dharma higher. When I was a new player, I noticed a reoccurring pop-up that said I could upgrade my trade centres. Dharma is the dlc that actually enables me to do it. Got it for that reason alone.

EU4 is so damn hard on normal. I played as Brandenburg and got attacked within the first 8 years for no reason. It was so dumb and that's just on normal mode.

Third Rome looks good, but once I play as Serbia and Russia it kind of loses content for the rest of the world.

I bought the Base game and Art of War. But I feel like I am missing some important things. Please correct me if I am wrong but I want the DLC because of the following reasons: 1. Art of War - everyone likes it. 2. Cossacks - allowed you to call in your ally to war with a promise of land. 3. The Right of Man - Great Power actions which allow you to influence nations. Also, tell your AI how to fight in your war. 4. Emperor - allows you to see Hegemony and extra diplomatic features with your subjects. (In Steam, it has Mixed review, which I don't know why). 5. Mandate of Heaven - allows automated diplomacy. There are a lot of DLC, eh... Be funny if I buy them all and EU5 comes out. Any other suggestions?

I humbly disagree with emperor being better DLC than Art of War ;) if you play anything outside of Europe, Emperor doesn't do anything for you, while art of war affects you whenever you play...

Random New Worlds are my Favorite feature by far, especially if combined with custom nations. So I really dont see that placement of Conquest of Paradise. Sure it doesnt add any core gameplay mechanics that are necesarry, but Id say it adds most replayabilty value out of all DLCs.
