The Corolla has been a compact car standout for decades. The wonderful news is Toyota has done some tweaks for the 2020 model. Under the hood of the SE is a 2.0L inline-4 that produces 169Hp & is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The Corolla's exterior has been refreshed for the 2020 model year taking cues from the hatchback. On the inside you will find a nice level of quality and soft touch materials plus Toyota Sensing 2.0 to keep you safe. Should you BUY the 2020 Toyota Corolla SE with a 6-speed manual?

I absolutely love it. They should've offered the 6MT in the Nightshade edition. I feel like most manual drivers are looking for that sporty, trendy look and offering the Nightshade in only CVT is a major ZONK in my book.

The Corolla has come a LONG way since I owned two of them, 1973 and 1975 vintage, both hatchbacks. Eight second 0 - 60 isn't going to knock your socks off, but this one takes exactly half the time to get to 60 as those '70's ones. I suffered many years of horsepower deprivation and will never be the same but have been trying to make up for lost time starting with an 84 GTI, 91 Talon TSI, 95 Maxima, 2000 modded Mustang GT, 08 Speed 3, and finally a Golf R w/APR Stage II. I'm running out of years to up the ante much further as I'm almost as old as the presidential candidates.

The perfect car for anyone who wants to learn how to drive Manual. And it's a Toyota product - you know reliability most likely won't be a problem until long after the warranty runs out. Buy one and drive it for 50~100k+ miles, then sell it to some kid who wants to learn how to drive a manual. Use the money towards buying yourself a legit sports car.

I currently own the 2020 Corolla 6Spd Manual. Absolutely worth it, its pretty quick, fun, reliable and the MPG is super impressive. I fill it up with $20 (depending on gas cost) and it gets me around 440 Miles of range depending on how you drive. 35mpg cruising at 80mph. 40mpg cruising at 70mph. 50+mpg cruising speeds between 30mph to 60mph. Don't need a hybrid 😊

Heck yeah, Manual drivers, we all know the EPA gas mileage estimates are phony. Manual in real-life driving can usually beat the automatic fuel economy, even those crappy soul-less CVTs. Plus it has the added benefits of: being fun to drive, being in complete control and more aware of what is coming up ahead; cheaper to buy and cheaper to maintain; longer lasting; better control in snow and slippery conditions; did I say more FUN? lol #savethemanuals yeah!

Just got my 2020 corolla SE with the 6 speed, for those of you in the market for a compact sedan , you cannot go wrong with the corolla . The corollas 2.0 engine has more hp/tq than the civic. Mpg is damn near identical but the corolla has a slightly larger gas tank hence giving you longer range between fill ups. I wanted a 6 speed manual and sunroof, checked out honda and turns out you can only get the sunroof with the si or the ex-t both of which have the 1.5T, nothing wrong with the 1.5T but i personally would rather stick to NA due to longevity.

This is now the car I want, even over the Camry XSE, and the Honda Civic Sport Sedan. The Civic is still a great car, but for what I want, the Corolla SE/XSE is much better in many ways, and it seems they fixed the problem with the CVT transmission that they recalled in the 2019 Hatchback. I would get the XSE if I could, but the SE has almost everything the XSE has that I would want with the optional package with the JBL stereo, blind spot monitoring, etc. There are a few things not available from the XSE on the SE, but some may be able to add as options/accessories. I don't know why the manual transmission version is not available with the JBL stereo, and that manual motor a available on the XSE, like it was not available on the Honda Civic Sport Touring Hatchback until 2020. This color is exactly what I want, but all the colors are nice. I would go for the other interior with the black doors. I like the exterior styling with the fancy front and rear panels. They would look blah, and plain as smooth. Here, it would have the front license plate mount, which I would put clear covers, and a nice black metal frame front and back. I thought the taillights had smoked reverse lights like the XSE, but I believe you could swap them out for XSE tsillights, or save money and have them light smoke tinted without running into vehicle code violations, since it comes factory OEM on the XSE. Most police officers would not know the difference, or care, unless you were out of line, and other reasons. I would also get the optional black emblems, especially on the lighter colors, but the chrome ones look fine on the darker colors, especially black. I also notice the SE has the exterior rear view mirror turn signals, and sunroof, not available on the Honda Civic Sport Sedan/Coupe, and Hatchback. The wheels look similar to the Honda Civic Sport Sedan, albeit, tires are one 225, instead of 235. It also seems to come with various brand tires from what I have seen. The blackout roof like optional on the Camry XSE is a good idea for lighter colors, especially, and could be done if you wanted to spend the money on it. It could even be wrapped, even in carbon fiber pattern if you wanted. The SE does not have the underhood cover like the CSE, but I supposed you could get that, if you wanted. Everything else on the exterior and drivetrain is the same as the XSE except for the gunmetal rear spoiler, instead of body color, which does not make a difference for me. Inside, besides a few exceptions, it's a small compromise for the money savings. The biggest difference is the instrument panel. I love the one on the XSE, though the SE analog gauges and smaller digital readout is similar to the Camry TRD. On the XSE, the simulated leather seats, forgot what they call it is nice, but I am not crazy about the striped cloth pattern, like the Camry TRD and SE, but it's okay. I initially hated it, but it grew on me, but the Camry XSE and Avalin TRD have much nicer leather seats, but this is a Corolla. On the SE, the seats look pretty nice, maybe similar to the Honda Civic Si to an extent. It would be nice to have a left side map pocket on the driver's left side seat back. The rear dual USBs may be a factory installed accessory, like on the Camry, maybe possible depending on trim level and optional packages, too. I would go fir the interior with the black panel doors. I believe the XSE has flossy black panels for the door pulls, which I would get covered in clear protective plastic, like the outer door B panels to prevent scratches, and wearing the paint finish from constant touching, as I would get the OEM door handle and trunk ledge protectors. Other than that, a few other things if I remember them all are on the XSE that is not on the SE. The ambient interior lighting, heated and power adjust seats, optional adaptive headlights, and built in navigation in the base XSE and optional JBL stereo. I agree that the infotainment panel is a bit too high, but other than that, no complaints if it has the JBL system. A CD player like the Camry JBL system would be nice, but I can use the alternative things, or get a portable CD player, since it has the auxiliary audio input jack with the front USB jack below the A/C controls. The XSE also has wireless charging, which I want, now that I have a wireless compatible Mophie Juice Pack battery case for my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 512G. The front USB jack is the one for the hookup with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The USB in the center console with the 12V is for power, not sure if you can hook up a smartphone, iPod or USB to play music. Wheel locks, weather floor and trunk mats and maybe a few other factory OEM accessories, light smoke tint windows and possible a few after market customizing accessories, mostly underhood and such if available, and a Vantrue dashcam, and that's probably everything I would want, along with Synthetic motor oil, maybe a K & N replacement air filter, and nice polish, maybe the Turtle Wax Hybrid Ceramic line, and I would be a happy camper. This has 10 more HP than the decent Honda Civic Sport Sedan N/A 2.0L, so they are both winners for decent power, reliability, durability, and longevity. Very nice styling, especially in this color, and not too big, but still can carry a decent amount of things.

YES you are definitely right! I make the test drive of the civic sport and the corolla se upgrade package last 2 month. Let me be honest, the civic sport is roomier front leg and rear leg, the steering wheel feel more secure, the sound quality is also better than the corolla se. BUT, The Toyota corolla se is faster in performance than the civic sport ( I raced my friend who has a civic sport and he was surprised and mad that I won), the seats are way more confortable, the fuel economy is better and also the RESALE VALUE is way better then the civic sport. Gues what? I ended up buying the corolla se upgrade package and I didn't REGRET! More you drive that car more it feels special. Please make a test of both before you but one of them

The only Corolla so far that I like after many years.....I wish we got the nose, hatchback option, the 2 liter dynamic force engine and 6MT option.....we only get the 1.8 & 1.8 hybrid with moped gearbox and milder & meeker nose in Indonesia.....

Great review. Kudos to Toyota for the manual version. I think the Honda Civic Sport sedan with manual is a better car (handling, shifter, suspension, etc) for less money. But nice to have options.

Joe, you recently reviewed a redesigned Nissan Sentra. Which do you prefer? And what if you were to compare the CVT versions of both?
@tails300
@tails300 4 жыл бұрын
The SE Corolla CVT has a physical first gear which alleviates the strain on the belt and helps with acceleration. The Nissan does not, so the Corolla will definitely hold up better long term over the the Sentra.

I like Corolla with a manual transmission. I'm curious how an up to date clutch and shifter feel. If so, I would make a project to put a Toyota diesel into this car.

Yes, I've watch the video. I've only driven the older Toyota that have a manual transmission (the ones with clutch fork). The technology is same but updated with electrical modules. I love Toyota diesels too. Unfortunately, Toyota couldn't meet EPA standards back in the days, but I did hear rumors about Toyota releasing diesel from factory only on trucks and SUV's.

Of course design is subjective. My view here is that Toyota made dull dull dull boring designs for the exterior and interior for several years. The design department went home at 9:05am each day. This coincided with a drop in their global market share between 2010 - 2015. Thankfully the last 2 or 3 years you can feel they are now working up to 5pm. I don’t love the design of all the Hyundai’s or Kia’s but damn they were trying.
