Good presentation, and great info. As often is the case in the Church, it's both-and, not either-or. And, the point about making sure your therapist's worldview fits with yours is crucial. If it doesn't, more harm than good can be done. It's OK to walk away if the therapist is not helping you, or if you don't get the sense that the therapist is not understanding what you are trying to communicate to him/her. Find a therapist with whom you know you can work and will help you build the toolkit that you need to recognize your particular obstacles and work through them.

This was helpful and I'm grateful for your humility to recognize where your limits are. I've found many priests really shut down when it comes to anything outside of the cerebral theology topics or priests that actually DO act as marriage counselors and therapists and have given terrible direction to some people. Great video father!

This is wonderful. I often thought about this, the difference between when to go to whom. And what was I "allowed" to do as a Catholic. "Would I be offending God going to a therapist instead of a priest?" What you're saying makes so much sense. Thank you. 🙏

I know it’s been 2yrs since it was posted, but is there somewhere or someone to go to for priest who are therapist?

It's very rare for priests to be therapists as well. It's probably best to just ask your local parish priest if he knows of any in the diocese.

It's so evident today that priests just seem overwhelmed, and don't have time for counselling. If one has a chronic illness, he could tax the priest's patience to say the least. One would feel guilty that he took time away from the priest looking after someone or something more important. Afterall, there is a vocation shortage.
