Definitely an old school vs new school philosophy on the short game. New school says 60 degree, flop it from any lie, spin it on a dime. While old school uses the 7-9 irons, with putting stroke, to lag the ball to the hole. With the weekend golfers, old school wins 🏆.

I only use a wedge for chipping when the ball is buried in greenside rough. Otherwise, it's an 8 Iron.

Just watched this video on chipping, one thing that you didn't cover is ball position, where would place the ball if I was hitting a wedge vs a 7 iron?

I use 8/9 iron for some of my chip shots around the green. I just find it easier to control. I tend to stuff up those shots using my SW or PW.

My late father taught me this lesson in the 2000's , it was true then and it is true now. My favorite chipping club is an 8 iron.

This is what I love about the short game, there is room to be creative and there is usually more than one way to get the job done. You just have to choose what you think is going to work for you and commit.

Been trying to use 7,8 or 9 from 30-50 yards out instead of wedge, if i can get a feel for it then it gives me options at least

Keith, Try it out, but my recommendation is to go to wedges once that far off the green. Best, Adam

I will use my 54 or 58 degree lob wedge if I need to negotiate a high shot over a bunker or carrying from fairway more than 20 yards out. For chipping, I use the following “carry:roll” ratios: Pitching wedge 1:1 9-iron 1:2 8-iron 1:3 7-iron 1:4

That's fine if it's working for you. Of course they are general guidelines as conditions and green speeds vary so much. All the best, Adam

Bump and run is not that easy for me now. I use 9 iron for running approach, but most likely I prefer to use SW for approach. Will practice!!

Totally agree with using the least loft needed to get the ball on the edge of the green and rolling. I changed from always using a sand wedge to using multiple clubs (SW, PW, 9, 8 or 7) and dropped my handicap a full stroke this year.

I chip with every club from 6 iron down but I only reach for my lob wedge if there is a bunker or hazard between the flag and where my ball is sitting.

I have used my sand wedge for all types of shots around the green. I open or close it, but I always have the same shaft length. I find that when only playing about 1 time a week, I can be much more consistent., and not worry about rocketing 7 irons through the green.

Thanks again, Adam. I always use a 7iron for those little chip shots around the green, so long as there’s no danger in the way (bunkers, sprinkler heads etc). I occasionally get accused of ‘old man Golf’ but, as you say in the video, I have so much more control and there’s less that can go wrong. I’ll take ‘old man golf’ all day if it means I walk off with a par instead of a bogey (or worse).

I do the same thing, as long as there is not much loft required. I call it a bump and run. Whatever works for you. I guess I play old man golf because I am old (60s). lol

the 8 and 9 give me so much more confidence than a W or 56 or 60. After a year of practicing, I find it to be much easier with an 8 or 9 depending on distance. I can't trust the 56 or 60. I haven't tried the 7 but suspect it will be harder to keep on the green.

In my youth, I’d go with 7-iron for most chips….used 3 clubs around the green. And I used the 7 for those bump and runs (didn’t t have Phil’s skills!) …But I was practicing a lot more than now. Now, it seems I just have time to hone my skills with a sand wedge.
