I think your character in Road to the Show needs to look into Hockey and Basketball and Football and maybe Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment or Grand Theft Auto.

Great words of wisdom. You should have bragged up your football exploits more though. Athletes are athletes. Specializing wont make you an athlete, it will make you better due to the focus of training, but those that have athletic skill take those skills to other sports and remain successful. My son loves baseball, but has played soccer, plays football, does tae kwon do and plays the clarinet. Each one of those other sports and skills add to the total product. Tae kwon do probably has added the most to his overall skill set. The flexibility, toughness, quickness and being isolated one on one or on the mat all by yourself preforming forms and being critiqued by judges. Will he be a college athlete? Idk, doesnt matter, he will be successful at whatever he does because of the skills he has learned from sports.

When I was a kid, my parents signed me up for everything. I played baseball, hockey, tennis, golf, guitar, piano. I think is essential to have a variety of interests. My grandfather taught my to hunt and fish as well. We only have one life, explore it.! Good topic Matt.

Why are there so many Dominicans in the bigs? They have a population of only 10 million yet make up 11% of MLB 25 man rosters. Some of those kids QUIT school at 10 and play baseball all-day, everyday.

No kid should be focusing 100% on one sport. If they only like one sport, then fine, but need to take months long breaks. Over use is a thing.

A lot of these kids that specialize don’t learn is how to be a roll player on a team. They find baseball, they’re good at baseball and they don’t want to get in the uncomfortable position of being a grinder on the hockey team, or a blue collar guy in the paint on their basketball team, or a blocking back on the football team. Its really good for kids to learn how to contribute and how to be a team player when they aren’t the stud on the team. More guys will end up topping out of their talent level than not, and even those guys who have hall of fame talent will appreciate their teammates more if they’ve had to carry water for someone in another sport.

Agreed 100%. My best memories and friends were from multiple sports. And look like you in Mass, here in Michigan, playing basketball got me in shape for baseball. Back in the 90s, highschool baseball was a 3 month sport. Now, it's a little different. If I could have played baseball year round, perhaps I would have had a better chance to play in college instead of walking on at a D1 school and sitting the bench 3 years. Great advice Matt

As a parent of a 13 year old, I would love him to play as many sports as possible. But he has zero interest in anything outside of baseball. He will shoot hoops with buddy's but doesn't want to play basketball, played soccer one season and hated it. He has played baseball with the same group of boys for 6 years and loves it. Is that a bad thing?

kenny brouillard not at all, if he really likes baseball he should play it as long as he wants/can. He'll be more likely to be motivated to work in baseball and could lead to him playing in college. Absolutely nothing wrong with having a strong passion for one sport.

I know that I don’t know a thing about parenting but I also recommend wrestling for mental toughness, strength, and body coordination. It’s just one of those sports where you’re never too old to join and for athletics that aren’t gifted with Tako Fall height, you’ll only compete against people your own size.
