I hired a Tesla Model Y in Nice. Excellent range, and lots of charging options and locations. It was the hard ride, and not the range that put me off that particular EV.

There are so many factors against living with an EV in America. Lack of charging infrastructure is big. The government is pushing EV's and yet they haven't followed through on building more charging stations. There is much more because as an automotive engineer, I understand the physics behind both ICE and EV. The public is woefully ignorant about both EV's and ICE's and your video series is helpful Anna, but economics really needs to be explored. For example, if a consumer purchases a new Tesla 3 series, is the car really a throw away car after 8 years when the battery warranty runs out? There is a reason for example the battery warranty expires at 8 years and not 15 years, because that is when batteries tend to fail. What is the resale of an 8 year old Tesla 3 series? Not much. How much does a new battery cost after 8 years, if battery performance has declined further degrading an already precarious range? Over $20K USD. So, it isn't just a performance difference, or the inconvenience of charging, but rather the cost of EV as they age compared to an ICE vehicle. Moving forward, there will be battery breakthroughs in the future. But gasoline has 100 x's...will repeat, 100 x's the energy density of a Li-Ion battery. Unless energy capacity of Li-Ion batteries changes in ensuing years relative to their size and weight, EV's will continued to be hampered competing with gas cars. Solid State batteries with better energy density? They will be even more expensive than Li-Ion batteries as EV's already cost more than an equivalent gas car. Good to have choices as discussed, but to me from a cost and convenience standpoint a gas vehicle is still the way to go and btw, that is not a hybrid vehicle which has its own considerable list of concerns and a subject for another time for those that believe splitting the baby is a good thing.
@Michael000000017 ай бұрын
Friend of mine lives on the country side of Boston. Regrets having bought a Tesla 3 much. Range is totally miscalculated with the unwinding roads, wind, cold etc. + lack of infrastructure. Typically much too optimistic. Needs proper planning when doing a multi day hiking trip. Personally I'd love e cars but infrastructure is not there yet - maybe except you drive a Tesla in Western Europe + usually charge it at home + don't do big road trips like to Italy, Spain or Greece. In the big cities big majority are renters. No infrastructure around or infrastructure sucks (broken chargers, incompatible apps, rip offs etc.).
@tomnewham12697 ай бұрын
Hybrids have definitely have their place especially if driven in urban areas. Also hybrids (both plug in and conventional) have a better fuel economy than an ICE vehicle. If there can be a standard way of testing the health of a battery in a BEV, then perhaps second hand BEV's can hold their resale value and can make it a proposition for buyers of second hand cars.

I think like you say is the climate in the UK we have very wet damp cold winters plus dark days so with all that going on the heating,radio, lights etc this will hit the battery hard I think it's still hard to make decision to purchase one 😊

Thank you Anna for your endless honest reviews.I,m not the type of person that can afford to go into a showroom and bye a brand new car.Normally I,m looking at cars that are 3/4 years old.History will tell us how different manufacturers and their brand of battery lasts ie will it loose 10% of its charge per year,and how well has the previous owner looked after it.Has it been left to charge overnight to full charge 100% each time and has it been run down to low.How do we know.So if I was to select a car, any car..EG VW id7 which does have one of the best ranges for new cars currently available and best case scenario the previous owner has looked after the battery.383 miles brand new.Now if it looses 10% per year that’s 70% charge left after 3 years,that’s 328 miles left,but wait.Its raining outside and freezing cold.I need my lights on,my windscreen wipers on,and the heater to demist my windscreen and keep me warm and I have another person in the car,and wanting to preserve the life of the battery I keep charging it to only 80%.(Now is that 80% of the life of the battery that is left which is now 70% from brand new).I,m going to guess and say that in winter conditions we can expect to loose half of the 70% range that is left.I,m happy for people to correct me on this,Now based on that my range is now 164 miles.,and the depreciation and insurance hasn’t even been taken into account.Now if I wanted to go green I can eg buy a hybrid..Toyota make very good hybrids..The cost of a Toyota Corolla estate top of the range 2.0 will be around 20,000 if it’s 3yrs old, 0:20 depending on conditions.the insurance will be halved..I can still get 60 mpg,they give you a 10 year warranty on the battery,and they hold their price very well and are one of the most reliable calls on the market.( I don’t work for Toyota)Now if new car buyers wanted to go green they can get one for 30000,and buy solar panels,batteries and eco friendly heating to do their 0:20 bit for the planet.Time will tell.Two many unknowns for myself at the moment,and the cost of charging them whilst away from home is ridiculous.Too me, hybrid is the way until the market matures.
@stephenrussell60747 ай бұрын
On average EV batteries degrade at only 2.5% per year, as they have a gross capacity over the net useable this is initially covered by the buffer in capacity. Current estimates are that an EV battery will deliver around 200 000 miles. Increasing all the time. Also if an EV were losing 10% per year it would not be at 70% after 3 years the 383 would go to 279 which is 72.8% of the max. However that does not allow for the buffer

A very well presented and informative video Anna. On the motorway in the winter it's the perfect environment to get the worst range as you mention. Higher speed, shorter daylight and cold. The market is moving fast though. claimed range has increased increased quite a lot over the last few years. Many thanks for sharing.
@AnnaOnRoads7 ай бұрын
Hi Anthony, thank you very much ❤ I also think the increased range is actually an acknowledgement that charging is an issue. Batteries are getting bigger, but this isn't a good thing, it affects handling, decreases the life of brakes, has a greater environmental impact including road usage (2.5 tonnes on average!)

We could do most of our driving with our VW ID.3. Charging at our wallbox at home. Using Solar panels. But in fact we only drive electric in a 150 km range (2 x 150 km = 300 km). Still using or petrol and diesel cars.

Range is the key consideration. I live in Western Australia where hybrids are preferred because we drive 100s of miles to country towns and places of interest. Won’t go electric until they’re capable of doing 1000km on a fully charged set of battery cells.

@@AnnaOnRoads My sister and her husband live in Victoria and from Melbourne did a trip to Mount Buffalo and this is the calculating analysis they had to use to prevent the car from failing to proceed : “We paid $20 to charge up before leaving on fastcharge, $10 top up at Euroa, then when we got to Bright we fully charged on the Ora’s granny (trickle 240v) charger at the accomodation to 90% capacity. We then drove up Mt Buffalo and drove back to Euroa on that charge (just!!) and it was $25 to charge to 90% again to get home. so approx $50 in totall round trip. You must be very prepared though and plan the trip, make sure the charging stations have availability and the right rate of charge etc. An interesting experience and we learnt a lot.” I mean, really? @@wolfgangpreier9160 So let me guess you drive a BEV which will have tyres on it. Tyres are derived from oil and so is bitumen which means you still haven't ditched fossil fuels. Also unless you grow all of your own food, you will be indirectly using fossil fuels as agriculture systems use them in tractors and fertilisers. Fun fact. In Australia at least, light vehicles contribute ONLY 10% of our carbon emissions. So if we really want to make a difference, then we need to stop focusing on vehicles and focus on other intensive carbon emission industries.

Yes i grow some of my food, 2. agriculture still runs on fossil fuel but is just as every other industry forced to ditch them, 3. fertilizers are not made of oil. Will all of that take time and much money? Of course it will. But what is the alternative? Just do nothing, burn more fossil ressources which our children and grand kids will NOT have because they are FOSSIL and hope that nature has a good heart and looks after us? Fun fact: 10% CO2 emissions is too much. It will be Zero in not later than 2040.

Electric cars, in theory, are cool, but the eventual demise of the battery makes it a bit of a money pit. Where I live, people hold on to their cars for 10, 15 even 20 years. These batteries just don’t have the longevity to keep a car for long or to sell it after 10 years because the battery has depleted and who wants your dying car? The best power is nuclear or, even better, hydrogen. However, those cars will make less money for governments. Last time I joked that electric cars are gay, which they are, but in the end, they just aren’t practical. Environment aside, the combustible engine is one of the greatest marvels since the wheel. Make no mistake about it, petrol cars are a joy. Now, I know there’s going to be a few snowflakes that will read this and can’t help, but comment on Mother Nature. To that, I say… keep your comment civil and make a cogent argument instead of a passionate one. Passion is great, but not in the face of logic. If you want to spend more money on an electric higher end car and you can afford it, go for it! Just don’t tell others that it’s better for the environment, because no one cares… not in the abstract at least. Peace, Love & Mischief Anna. I love your videos.
