I soooooo wish I had my great grandma's crochet hooks. We didn't even know she crocheted until 3 years ago. I was working on a baby blanket for my son, and my grandma walked by and said "Oh! My mom did that!" Then it all clicked about where all these intricate blankets, doilies, and even lace gloves came from. She had made them all!!!! My heart aches knowing that her tools were sold off after she died.

Awwww, my heart hurts with yours. It sounds like you have a lot of the things that she made though, which they sound like treasures! Hugs to you. Isn't it amazing to think that something you enjoy was likely passed down through the generations to you! 🧶🧶🧶

You're so lucky to have the work of her hands in your life; God bless you with peace and satisfaction to have those items. My Grandma taught me to crochet one summer 64 years ago when I told her I was bored. I think of her frequently when I have a hook in hand; my love for crochet is connected to my love for her. As an adult, I used the hand-pieced quilt she made for her own bed until it was threadbare and I still love it. I told my kids, "Don't expect to use this; I'll wear it out because I love it so much!" Take your comfort in knowing that you share a love for the same art.

I can knit and crochet. I learned crochet as a young child about 7 years old. My mother taught me. I am a self-taught knitter and I had a love/hate relationship with knitting for a long time. I began to knit for charity and my skills exploded. A friend asked me if I ever considered knitting socks. I thought that was the biggest waste of time ever! However, she convinced me that I would be elevated to a new level of knitting addiction. She was absolutely right!! Let me just say that whichever someone chooses, a clear focus should be to achieve excellence in your work. The satisfaction for me comes with the beautiful, well-made completed project. Keep striving to do things better!

Funny enough, my temperament is more naturally suited to the immediate gratification and simplicity of crochet, but I found knitting to be a really helpful tool in working through some of that and also overcoming my perfectionism. It’s also given me the confidence that I can solve difficult problems or try something new, and I normally avoid challenges or risk. I want to learn to crochet so I can make any amigurumi pattern, but there is just something about the look of a knit stitch that is just to die for for me. 😍

I so agree with the first question being the most important. Yes, I find crocheting easier, but I LOVE LOVE the look of knitted projects, and my mom who died when I was young was a knitter, so there has always been a yearning for me to learn to knit, I think it brings back memories of her to me. I finally took the plunge, and though I have gotten frustrated at times, I’ve stayed with it and am in love with it.

You're so right about needing perseverance. It took me forever to get uniform stitches and consistent tension. I was taught the pencil hold in crochet. I had no idea knife hold was an option until more recent years. One I used knife hold, the magic happened! If I had given up.... I never would have discovered it. Now I can even do amigurumi. But for years I couldn't even get a granny square right.

That’s so funny- a very similar thing happened to me with the continental style of knitting! I learned the English style back when I was 14 using red heart super saver and some wood skewers (I was bored and needed a hobby). I was interested- and eventually got some boye straight needles- But the motions and the ‘throwing’ of the yarn was cumbersome on my hands- Then, I tried a loom set from lion brand. In that loom set? A crochet hook I hadn’t ever seen or heard of a crochet hook before, so I was curious once I found out you could make things with it? I kept with it since I did indeed find it easier. Did that for several years on and off (lost my crojo for a while though) BUT! Recently, I was inspired to try knitting again- and, thanks to my years of crochet, I was able to pick up the (no pun intended) continental style of knitting much easier! The ‘picking’ of the yarn was much more similar to how I operated my crochet hook compared to the English style of throwing the yarn over the needles. Plus I already knew how to tension my yarn and hold my project, so now, I can do both!

@@lailanityler2380 wow that's so cool! It really does pay off to just keep at things and experiment. Try new things and continue learning. And then it's awesome when something just clicks and you take off with it.

I started crocheting first, but I just learned to knit. I just took this quiz for fun and, as expected, my answers were pretty split. I love both adorable crocheted toys and cozy knitted sweaters, more detail-oriented knitting and more relaxing crocheting, etc. The acts of crocheting and knitting are both enjoyable for me, which is what really matters, and I’m so glad I learned both. And might I add, you seem like a very nice and personable person, and your handmade toys in the background are so adorable!

I dabbled in knitting as a kid but quickly gave it up bc I got frustrated and didn’t have anybody to actually teach me. I just started crochet ~2 months ago and have really liked it so far, but I can’t help but wonder if knitting is a better fit for me based on the feel of the fabric-I don’t love how chunky and stiff crochet can be (with proper tension) compared to knit fabrics. But I don’t want to confuse myself by trying to learn knitting too soon. Any advice on how and when would be best for me to dip my toes in the knitting waters? Lol

I have been crocheting for about two years now and I’d like to share how it all started. My best friend actually loved to make chains and use them as bracelets and I loved to make them with her. But then I decided to go further and work off the chain. I made a rainbow very very long and skinny potholder, but we don’t use it. Then it was my great grandma’s birthday. I wanted to make something I wanted her present to be handmade! So I looked and looked all over KZbin and I came across this crochet grandma looking doll. I had a crochet hook that my best friend gave me and I had a bunch of yarn my grandma gave me. Then after that I never stopped crocheting!

Now more than ever I am interested in the "craft" side. My dad is a construction worker who also build dog houses and bird houses. My mother, aunt, grandmother, and more crochet. My mother tried to teach me young but eventually we stopped. I want sculpt, wood carve, and crochet. I am going to begin with crochet and can't wait with this new hobby.

As a long time knitter, knit (a sweater at 14 and socks in Home Economics class jr high) I didn’t really need to take the quiz as I can do both and have, since my six kids grew up both knit and crochet toys. But I found the quiz and explanations very informative/helpful. Lately I have been exclusively knitting dolls and toys. I am a couple of decades older than you and can second you on the fact that you can learn these skills if you have the desire to. I would highly recommend either skill as indespensible skills for going into senior years; but please don’t wait; the earlier you can learn them, the more you’ll accomplish I made several blankets for my kids and grandkids especially during the nursing baby years When you are mostly home with little ones these hobbies are easy to pick up and put down as the mothering requires. Besides you are likely to inspire your kids to be creative. Thank you for inspiring me with your beautiful creations!!

Hahahaha, I'm already a knitter but joined in the quiz out of curiosity. I'm indeed more inclined towards knitting (I got more A's), even though, my mum is a crocheter and none around me knits. I remember when I first saw knitting on television, I just love the look of the two sticks rocking (aka the traditional straight knitting needles), but when I started, yeah it was frustrating when making mistakes but I loved the process, I still do. I don't know I just think that knitting is easier to understand, I never knew where to poke the hook into in crochet, even now that I can do a bit of crochet, I still have problems with where to stab the hook into, therefore I still fall back to knitting. After picking up knitting, I indeed love that knitting has more drape, I've tried to make a scarf with crochet but found that it's too thick for my taste, but I do love that crochet can make home items such as baskets and bags more easily, that one knitting really falls short. In the end of the day, I have no regrets because I follow my heart, I love the feeling of making garment. Knowing a bit of crochet complements my knitting and I'm thankful that both crafts can coexist.

I wasn't interested in knitting at all because I don't like how the needles looked but I learned it by accident and fell hard. I ordered a set of tunisian crochet hooks but received a set of knitting needles instead. I was so mad when I opened the package at first and printed a return label immediately. Then I checked the price of the needles and it was actually 30% more expensive than my actual order and thought I got it at a bargain so I decided to give it a shot. After watching tutorials and doing them myself, I have never looked back. I love knitting now as much as crocheting and would do them alternately after work.

You have inspired me to learn to do Colorwork/Stranded Knitting! Your work is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! I have knitted a blanket and a couple of dishcloths and small items but I have leaned more toward crochet in the last year. Knitting is just so appealing to me, I want to delve in and learn this technique. Those color isle sweaters are just dreamy. Glad I recently discovered you, you clearly have a flair for style and good taste.

I looove making projects with granny squares. I love that it gives you the tiny reward feeling every time you finished one, it's easier to think 'I'll just make one square' when you have a moment then you make just one row of a huge blanket. And it's calming to me to make repeated squares, but you can still have a fancy looking cardigan. And it's (until joining them together) easy to carry around and handle an individual square. The only downside (to me) is So. Many. Loose. Threads. to sew in. Yeah, I did this quiz even though I already have been crocheting for a few years, and based on my answers, I made the right decision 😊. Though I'm still interested in learning knitting in the future, this video helped me put more in perspective what the differences are and what I will be getting myself into then.

I do both. And from my experience, if it's for things like clothes, blankets, etc, Knit tends to be more flexible, while Crochet tends to be more stiff/supported. For craft projects, crochet tends to be more freeform since it's easier to work in a 3d space while knittinf tends to require more fuss. I suggest to try both and see what you'll love I like knitting more since I tend to focus more on cardigans and sweater, and I preffer the way Knit drapes compared to crochet for those types of projects

Thanks for making this video. It gives a lot of good information & gives good perspective. I was looking about a year ago to learn one of these crafts, but my most important feature was something that would be relaxing & would help me with my stress levels. I wasn't especially drawn to either knitting or crocheting, but I did have some crochet hooks. I am a detail oriented person who likes to problem solve, but, again, I was looking for something more relaxing. I went with crocheting because knitting looked so much more complicated & was intimidating. I've been crocheting for about a year now & have never made a granny square, a dishcloth or pillow, but am interested in garments/wearable items. I'm not currently interested in making amigurumi, but it's something that I might consider in the future. I am interested in more intricate color patterns which has recently introduced me to mosaic crochet. I'm not opposed to hand spun or hand dyed yarn, but it's beyond my budget. I don't get the cheapest yarns, but I do search for good deals & check various KZbin channels for reviews & recommendations on various yarns to find out what they're really like before purchasing. So far, I've mostly made hats, scarves, shawls & started a couple of blankets/throws.

I am self taught for both crochet and knitting. I actually started out doing tapestries; taking up to a year to complete a large project with several different stitches. But I couldn't do that and watch TV so I took up knitting, so I could knit and not take my eyes off the show I was watching. I am a person who needs busy hands and everyone I knew wanted sweaters for winter. I was brought up to believe crochet clothes and item were tacky, yet I decided to go look for new doll patterns recently since I had worn out my Jean Greenhowe doll pattern books and I was astonished. The dolls that were crocheted on sites like Etsy were absolutely amazing and beautiful. So now I crochet.

What are your feelings about swatching yarn before making a project? I was never one to do that. I would just dive in without checking my gauge and then wonder why it didn’t come out right.🙄 I have found, especially when using yarn that is different from what the creator recommended, it is important to find the correct needle size to get the result you want. Learned crochet at school when I was around 11, then forgot. I had only taught to make simple stuff like doilies and small bags. I did enjoy it but I guess in my mind it was something for a school project so I didn't think of it after I stopped having crochet classes. Tried knitting maybe 7 years ago. Could only make basic shapes, but then forgot. Now I'm back to crochet and really enjoying it. I am thinking about knitting again but I do briefly remember my knitting projects always had something wrong with them, and compared to crochet it didn't seem it could be easily fixed. Since I'm only doing amigurumi for now I don't see a reason to go back to knitting, but who knows?

Yeah I’m learning both at the same time. I’ve knitted first for a couple weeks. Just started this week with crotchet. I’m learning I enjoy knitting more. But it’s also easier in my hands and don’t cramp up as much as crochet. I practice crotchet for about an hour daily or until my hands can’t cramp up. But will knit for a few hours just cause I enjoy it just a bit more. ❤ I save my $ for the high quality stuff, but that’s me. “You pay for what you get” saying goes a long way. I feel like knitting is much more precision and cleaner look. Plus knitting is more challenging and I like that! ❤ Also, she didn’t mention it, but if you’re just not getting crocheting or knitting you can also get into looming. It’s much easier and you create many things. You won’t be able to make toys but can make scarves, hats, socks, blankets, gloves, all the usual stuff. But like she said, you have to keep working at it. PRACTICE! ❤
