The red mandavilla is gorgeous along with both phalaenopsis orchids. Thank you for sharing the video with us, I will definitely deadhead to encourage more growth.

I'm glad it was useful to you Koni! This is quite an old video (in KZbin terms) and I've made several newer ones on the Mandevilla if you're interested in that plant. The playlist is here: kzbin.info/aero/PLQKwmNwb1T5DgSlHsp2YtjlvkVTToeYVb

Unfortunately Geoff if I kept my temperatures that warm I’d have no massies left, so you won’t be seeing one in my greenhouse, but I did enjoy it.

Hi. I am writing from India. I recently bought a Mandevilla flower plant. It is expensive in our country. But her head broken and leaves dried out, so, I cut off the head and tried to fix the broken branch with tape. My question is.. Seems the main stem broken and broken part got dried already should I cut off the broken area too, and, only keep the main single stem which is attached to the soil? (Because there are no other stems remain)

Very difficult to help without actually seeing it. In my experience anything fixed with tape usually dies eventually so I'd remove that section and cut to just above a bud or a node. If you've any shoots then I'd take some insurance and use them to make new plants by this method: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enm0nYagg62BhaM

Can you take cuttings from outside mandevilla in late October (now) and propogate over the winter? I a m in central Georgia, USA where we still have up to mid 70s F, but it has been to the 40s some nights, but now it is still in 50s or so. thx If so, will it need darkness and cooler area? or should I just bring the whole plant in and propogate in the spring. Running out of space inside and would rather take cuttings.

You can take cuttings at any time. Is it the ideal time? No, but there's nothing lost only a bit of effort - and I very often take them during the winter simply because it's when I have the free time to do it. This short five minute video shows you how easy it is, step by step: kzbin.info/www/bejne/enm0nYagg62BhaOcttps://kzbin.info/www/bejne/enm0nYagg62BhaM

Interesting comparisons to different climate conditions. Here in northwest Florida, Dipladenas are generally sold/listed as the viners, and Mandevillas as the mounders. They’re a common spring box-store “annual” sold everywhere. In my experience (growing both in several colors), listed Dipladenas do seem like they vine more, but always mound prolifically as they send out multiple vines. No deadheading necessary in our zone 8b climate, and don’t seem to even slow their prolific blooming even in the dead of our hot, humid summers in a direct south condition. They are listed as drought tolerant, but we generally have a lot of rain, so I’ve not had to test it. We do get down to just below 32(F) for a few days in winter, but usually only at night with temps back to 40 or so during the day. I bring mine (in pots) into my windowed garage if I see temps falling below freezing, and they live season to season perennially. (I’m thinking they are probably naturally perennial in south Florida zones 10+.). They continue to pop out a few flowers year round, even though they will “self die back” some branches in winter months for me. All in all … seems they are a chameleon of a plant depending on where they are grown. Thanks for all the comparing climate info … enjoyed your video.

The problem with replying to comments on videos I made nearly 2 years is that I have no idea what I actually said. I can barely remember yesterday's conversations!🤣 Thanks for sharing your experiences - it's very helpful. 'Dipladenia' as a genus was retired in 1933 - and all plants were slotted into the Mandevilla genus. However nurseries cling to the older name. There are some hybrids bred for the basket and pot market which have had the vining characteristic removed - as a result people think there is a difference between Dipladenia and Mandevilla - but there really isn't - they're ALL Mandevilla - but some cultivars of Mandevilla are bred as clump formers rather than climbers. In the wild they're perennial and form large woody vines up to 6 metres long. I've recently been growing Mandevilla laxa from seed which are doing quite well. Great plants and under-rated in the UK as a conservatory or 'houseplant'.

I think that proves that you should ignore anything I say! 😂 Actually it does prove that micro-climate is more relevant than general 'growing advice'.

Tropical Plants at 53 Degrees I agree.. Microclimates really are amazing. We live on top of a ridge so we hardly ever get a hard frost but we get snow when others don’t. I can grow things that are 10 degrees warmer - can’t explain other than we are in a microclimate.
