I'm in Georgia (southern US) and I bring in my Dipladenia in October/November. I only prune lightly. I put in a sunny window where I get great light, leaves dont fall off, and it blooms and puts out bew growth in February, I put it out in April/May, and keeps going well into Fall the next year. It's been a great plant for me here, esp with its slight draught tolerance.

I live in Georgia too! I followed her directions to the letter and the results were so satisfying. I think because it’s such a resilient plant, the mandevilla will come back whether persnickety care details are followed or not. critical. I loved the idea of not killing such a lovely plant, giving it another chance at life. But I also really loved not having to spend 40-80 dollars for replacements come spring.

I was able to bring in my Mandevilla vine yesterday. I put it in my basement. I am wondering if I need to keep a light on otherwise it would be quite dark. Most of the time I have LED lighting in that room. What would your opinion be?
@conniehuet
@conniehuet Жыл бұрын
@@ValBourassa-o4e last year I put mine in mine in the basement, but I’m in a bi-level so it still received some light and I did water occasionally. When I put it out this spring it took much longer to put on growth and bloom. But it came back just as full and beautiful! The year before I put it in a room upstairs where it’s a little warmer and has daylight. It still shed its leaves but the growth and blooms were much earlier. I am in Northwest Indiana and we can have very cold winters. Also, I did not trim mine down to the level she did in the video. I just couldn’t do it 😂 so then I was sweeping up leaves all the time. I am opting for earlier growth and blooms for next year so I will be putting it in my foyer.

Cheers from Winnipeg, Canada! Thank you for sharing your video. Very informative! I had wintered a red Mandevila last year and will definitely bring it inside again after pruning back. I’m in Winnipeg too, and also have a large pot with pink, red, and white mandevila. It’s going to freeze tonight (October 3) and it’s time to bring it into my breezeway. Planning to enjoy it until that area gets too cold; she said 6 degrees, right? Then it will get a good haircut and be moved into my heated garage along with my geraniums and canna lilies. What a great video. All the salient information and none of the time filler! ❤❤❤

Thanks for the helpful mandevilla tips for overwintering. My question, my plant is about 2 ft high. I did not trim back last fall. A friend wintered it in her home. It has lost all its leaves but there are signs of growth on every stem right out to the ends. Should I just leave it or should I trim back some of the branches. Thanks in advance.

Every winter when I bring my Mandavilla indoors it drops a large number of leaves but then it begins to do something interesting. My plant begins to grow extremely long climbing vines during this period and wow do they grow fast. Over night they can grow several inches... it's absolutely bonkers. Eventually these vines will develop several seed pod(s). I'm not sure if I should leave these long climbing vines as is or simply cut them back after they develop.... any suggestions? Cheers ! BTW - Your plants are gorgeous !

Thank you, excellent & informative video! FYI; use gloves, it is essential to exercise caution when handling Dipladenia plants, as the toxic sap can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Additionally, it is recommended to keep Dipladenia out of reach of children and pets to avoid accidental ingestion.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. We bought Mandevillas last summer. They were growing along 5 foot stakes in the form of a tripod. We brought them inside during the winter but didn't do any trimming. The leaves fell off and we were left with naked vines. We recently placed them back outside again as the temperature begins to warm up. Leaves are slowly beginning to sprout. Do we need to trim the vines as you did in the video? or is it too late and just let it be?

However, I am realizing here, plants start their second period of growth after the heath of summer. This video is SOOOOOO helpful😊 'Took me quite awhile to find you, and 'am relieved to finally have such a thorough understanding of the how's & why's of over-wintering Mandevillas. However, I have already greatly over-watered mine 3Xs since I brought her inside in Nov. (thinking she was losing leaves due to dehydration).'Wondering now, w/out disturbing her further by digging her out of the pot, is there a way to tell if I've caused her roots to rot/killed her? Also, it looks like it doesn't matter where on the stems one makes the pruning cuts, is that right? Finally, I have to keep plants out of reach of my cat in my small apartment➡'wondering if, even though it's not cool in apt in winter, do you think I could keep her in a wardrobe closet till end of March, or should she be in sunlight? Again, thank you so very much for your video❣

I'm not sure how well she will do in the closet but give it a go -- if she is at room temperature give her a drink every now and then. I would fully expect the leaves to all fall off in the dark. Any chance you have a grow light you can put in there with her? Let me know how it goes!

If they are looking nice and green I would give them a little trim to promote new growth, but I wouldn't cut them back this severely. Usually if you don't cut them back they just make a huge mess in your house. Lucky you that they stayed green!

What about bringing in unwanted pests? How do you deal with that issue so it doesn’t infect my whole plant room? (Happened to me before) Thank you for the video!

I put them in my cold storage where pests aren't an issue. I would treat them with insecticidal soap otherwise.

Hi! Awesome video! I wish I saw it sooner. I left my mandevilla outside because it’s so large and now I’m afraid the frost killed it. I’m in North Carolina. Do you think it still has a chance of survival if I cut it back and bring it in the house now?

Sorry I missed your question earlier. How did you make out? Did it survive?

Hi Sandra - I have followed your advice and am overwintering my two Mandevillas in pots in a cold room - temp is maintained at 14 degrees Celsius. I have a soil guage and I check the soil every 7-9 days and wait until it reads dry before adding water. The room is pitch black - and I have several creepy-looking white shoots that have grown - several are over 20 cm in length. Should I cut them back to keep this growing energy within the base or just let them grow? and cut them back in the spring when I put them in a well-lit room in the house. - Again, Sandra - thanks for your great video.....

Thanks for watching! Yes mine continue to send out white shoots as well. I trim them back every so often. I barely water mine all winter. I think I've given them a drink once so far in the last 3 months. The more you water them the more they will try to grow so I would cut back on that a bit.

@@HuronRidgeAcres thanks for your reply- I’m relieved you get these white shoots as well…I will follow your advice and cut back on the watering….hopefully the two plants I am overwintering will spring to life in April/May with some light and some fertilizer. Very kind of you to get back to me so soon…,🇨🇦

If we put it under grow light on March, it will help them. I don't have too many windows with a lot of light?

Hi. Thank you for this. Once cut back can i put them in an unheated conservatory with lots of light. Will they survive not being in the dark? This is the only place I can store them.

Yes I believe they should be fine -- the cool temperature will keep them dormant -just make sure you don't let them freeze!
