I've been deleting images in camera for many, many years...I believe 1999? I've had one card failure or loss of images and that was a faulty $800 IBM 1GB Microdrive CF-II card and the year was 2003? It was a D1H and it had nothing to do with the card failure, they had a spinning disk and were super fragile. I've probably deleted about 500k images in those years. All in camera! I'm so confident in my Sony Tough 256GB CFexprees Type B cards! Since I'm using Nikon D6's for photojournalism...256GB gives me room to shoot more assignments without formatting. I only format if I've backed up my images elsewhere. Long story short Mark is not wrong, and Angry Ken Wheeler is wrong. Deleting images in camera is generally safe, but I would highly recommend you don't ever cheap out too much on cards!

Good tip Mark, I use a similar technique on my Canon R6. One thing to remember though, when you download into Lightroom, if you haven’t unprotected the images you cannot then delete them from the disk in LR if you don’t like them.

On D500 I lock the photos I want or might and then use 'delete all' to get rid of the unwanted or clearly out of focus ones. Then just refine it later on my laptop.

Mark - as always thanks for the video. For me, I'm trying hard not to look at my images while I'm shooting in the field. This is a result of three things - 1] while looking at my images in camera I missed an osprey fishing 20 yards from me 2] using Fast raw viewer software is a great software that allows me to quickly remove the images I don't want. 3] For me it is difficult to see the image quality on the small screen or in the viewfinder Thanks again for all of your videos

While I agree with all three of your points, I'd still recommend to verify IQ on some of the shots tight in the field. The tradeoff between exposure time and noise isn't all that straight forward, e.g. using IS on BIF has pros and cons, trading ISO vs freezing fast movement etc. By checking the IQ, you can reduce the likelihood that there is something you forgot about (happens) and that it stays wrong for the next bird.

I just transfer my images to my computer, then just format the SD card in camera. It’s worked for me since day 1. My SD card is 7 years old and still working fine. I haven’t really needed to delete images in the camera, since I review all images in the computer before deleting them. Sometimes an image looks bad on the camera screen, but later looks pretty good on the computer monitor. So, I’ve rarely used the delete button on any camera I’ve owned. Deleting images won’t mess up your camera, but over time it does move around and mess up the data on the SD card. I suppose eventually the card would have to be replaced. On my iPhone I’ll delete images all the time, with no ill results. It’s a good question.

I do this all the time. It has to be egregious tho, otherwise I wait til I can view it larger. That said, I haven't encountered any issues. I believe card quality matters, I don't cheap-out on memory cards & it seems to prove its value. Interesting tip about formatting afterwards. I haven't ever noticed a lag in performance.

I'm doing the same, and I found out that I'm then saving a lot of time back home, because of all the work I did outside. Note: it's amazing how all those shots were in focus!

Great to see a new video, Mark. I think I speak for many in saying that I'd love to see your review of the A7R V for bird photography. There are lots of good reviews out there, but nobody has taken this camera to the field to take pictures of birds for extended periods.

That’s rubbish you’ve not had one yet! Sure landscape photographers need to try it but tracking auto focus isn’t really necessary for mountains. Mine arrived yesterday, work today so only limited time to take a few snaps of garden birds and I was seeing how low I could go with the shutter speed which was quite impressive. But not a lot of use if you still need 1/3000 to freeze the bird….

There is a software called fastrawviewer, copy all your raw images to the computer, drag the whole folder into the software, boom, images show at instance. then, just press the quick key, to delete, to star, to do anything you want to the raw images.

Hi Mark, I used to delete images like you until one day all of the images disappeared, they were there when I finished shooting but loading to the computer at home, all were gone. I tried Sandisks Rescue Pro and it only saved a small amount of images and of course not the latest days shoot. I contacted Sandisk and they said to never delete images from the card when it is in the camera. Reason being, say you delete #3 and then #10 when you take your next image that file will be then split into fill part of #3 and part will go to #10. So that image is stored in two parts and that means trouble can arrive later. You say your cards slow down after deleting in camera, this could partly be the cause. This has happened to me twice and now I never ever delete in camera. So it sounds strange but Sandisk have said SD cards don't work in a logical manner so I will follow their advice. Just a warning and hope you never have the same issue as me. I was using Sandisk Exreme Pro V90 U3 cards.

I just switch to the Sony A7IV and unfortunately, with bracketed photos, you can’t do this. This is a pain in the ass using the Sony. It’s very disappointing that I can’t do what I can do on literally every other manufacturer in the universe and that’s just highlight a group of photos and delete them.

You’re deleting the images from the memory card, not from the camera. Eventually your card will fail because you have no way to clean up the data, like on your computer.
