Thank you for this! I've only had published works for a few months, but it seems the benefits may depend on the book for me. The one I cannot run ads on because of religious content seems to benefit from the free promotions in KDP Select. My newest I'm not putting into KDP Select hoping that the readers who like my other two are willing to put in $2.99 to purchase. For starting authors, I think KDP Select is an overall good deal, but I'm sure a lot of us would like to be at a point where we don't have to give out freebies or penny pages to be noticed.

I'd definitely agree that KDP Select's good for first-timers because of the potential exposure - of course, that means giving away books for free, which isn't something anyone wants to do for long! I think that makes sense for your newest book - let the other two in KDP Select be like the "hook" that gets readers to go from free reading to paid reading. Best of luck to you!!

This video is like a gem. I actually didn't know that I'm not allowed to distribute my books to other platforms once enrolled in KDP for 90 days. Guess this is one of the reasons why other amazon acct gets banned? Not sure though. Thank you so much for sharing! This video is so helpful and informative. Kudos!

Thanks for the video. I use select to promote and works well because of links provided to my other books. However, one benefit I'm not seeing is reviews? Just don't understand why readers don't make the effort to do this.

Do the books downloaded during Free Promotions, and for Kindle Unlimited, qualify as SALES, thereby improving the book's ratings?

I actually wasn't sure so I had to look into it. Sounds like in the past, Amazon's algorithm didn't differentiate between free downloads during a promo and normal sales, so it would have boosted your ratings. In the past few years, though, it seems like Amazon has started prioritizing placement of paid ads over organic recommendations - basically, if someone's browsing books, they're going to see more ads mixed in with their search results than books recommended for their sales count. So, even if the free promo downloads do still count as sales, they don't seem to boost visibility as much anymore, which is unfortunate.

In Free book promotion people read n many kdp authors steal each and everyone's info when they get a peek of the book internally. They tend to create books after getting a visual look of the book interior. No one buys through free book promotion, no reviews and no rating! It's a total loss

I was able to get a ridiculous number of people to download my book when I first did a book promo, but I had a similar experience and got almost no reviews afterwards. Luckily I haven't dealt with anyone stealing from my book (so far as I know), but I can see that happening.

You might have enrolled it in KDP Select by accident. Does it say it’s free “for Kindle Unlimited” subscribers? If it does then yeah, you’re enrolled and you’ll have to wait 90 days until enrollment ends. Make sure you don’t have it set to auto-renew enrollment (you can do this from your KDP bookshelf). I’ll say though, if it is enrolled, then it’s only free for people who pay for Kindle Unlimited. Anyone else will still have to pay to buy it!
