I'm mostly home, they don't even ring the bell or leave packages into my drop box outside or throw stuff over the lock gate. Instead the lazy sobs will just leave it out on the steps. I'm in NYC. Literally people walk by every few mins.

Good topic. I'm retired from the USPS after 40 years. I sell coins on eBay, and like you, have a PO Box for security reasons. I disagree with you on one point. The postal service has a regulation that when renting a PO Box, you are required to rent the size that will accommodate the volume of mail that you receive. I've been retired for 11 years now and have forgotten the exact wording on that regualtion, but you can't rent a small 5x5 box when you are going to be getting large packages on a regular basis. Also, when you get the larger box you eliminate the possibility of the postal employee putting that parcel locker key for your packages in the wrong PO Box. So, the guy who has a small box next to your small box gets the keys to the parcel locker with your precious metals. Doesn't happen every day , but it happens.

Does that go both ways? Say you opt for the larger box but don't get much mail. My post office only has size 2-S which should be good enough says, "Holds 15+ letters, 5 rolled magazines, or 1 Small Priority Mail Flat Rate Box". So just need to time my orders I suppose. I mainly want one for shipping out items without giving out my home address while maintaining a return address if something is returned/non-deliverable.

The USPS stopped leaving notes for me several years ago. If it were not for online tracking, I would not know to go to the Post Office. Also, I agree about "signature on file" . No way would I do that. Your packages could be stolen and you would have no recourse. Great topic! 👍

Good info CC. I’ll add this - get a PO Box that is around a corner. That way, even if you are followed and assuming you have any situational awareness at all, then you will simply wait to access your box until the PO lobby is clear of people, at least in your wing. If I know your PO Box number, then I can stake you out at the PO...and then follow you home.

Vertical Stacker that’s very true and another great point I didn’t think of mentioning. Were you able to select your PO Box? I wasn’t. Situational awareness is key. I typically go after hours and have contingencies for unwanted individuals.

One thing that isn't exactly accurate is the ability to go in and collect your mail from your PO box at any time, even after business hours. This is entirely location dependent because at one location that I had a PO box, they had certain box lobby hours, which was usually a few hours before and after they open/close the window section. Meanwhile, the distribution center (aka plant) has a 24 hour PO box lobby where customers can come in at any time to collect their mail or drop outgoing mail and parcels off in a drop box.

@@CampbellsCoins More joke than anything but the nice thing about most people is that their minds will fill in the blanks for you - iron pills must be heavy because they're "iron" pills. Thinking it over though, I would now suggest saying "lead as I cast my own fishing weights" since pure lead is heavy, not worth much and if the return address has "bullion" or "precious metals" in it then you can note that sell all sorts of metals. If the person asks if that's cheaper note that lead is going for just over a buck a pound a decent two ounce sinker runs two for a buck.

I thought most P.O. Boxes now come with something called “a real address” that you can use in these situations. Including credit cards I believe.

Yes, but if it happens a lot, they will force you to upgrade to a larger box.

I've received "delivered" notice alerts only to find my box empty, just like you. That's about the only problem I've had though. Overall, despite the relatively high cost, it's been a good experience.

How did you handle that situation if you don't mind sharing. I have the usps app on my phone phone showing what all I get that day but when I go check my box for that mail it doesn't be in there. I'm talking about like letters.

What if I receive a letter on my usps app showing it was put in the box,but when I check my box the letter is not there?

Take the tracking number to the receiving desk at the PO and ask them. It might have been misplaced in another PO box OR not delivered but scanned that it was. Had both happen to me. Talk to them and they should figure the problem out

I got the app too because a lot of my mail was stolen but I noticed this only happens when my regular mail carrier is on vacation. My regular mail carrier always puts it inside the mailbox. Unlike the person that takes over her route, he always leaves the mail laying around or doesn't deliver it and has the audacity of putting it as delivered.

But no sales tax would honestly offset the cost of the PO Box for me. Where I live you're not taxed if you spend over $1500 but often times I just want to buy the minimum for free shipping and then am forced paying 10% sales tax.

Okay this may be a dumb question, but is there a way to hide your legal name. For international orders and deliveries which makes me uneasy for them to know my exact name and address. Would prefer to keep general international orders / transactions non personal as possible.

I never attached my physical address to my PO box, so I didn't receive any mail from them. They would just leave it in my PO box. I got email reminders when I needed to renew. It was very low key.
