3 years later, I just purchased an M1 Mac mini 8GB/256GB (I do use a 1TB NVMe enclosure as my boot drive), and I have zero issues running InDesign, Illustrator, Excel, approx 20 Safari tabs, and various other apps simultaneously. Granted, my memory swap will get high during these times, around 6-8GBs, but that is not my typical workflow on my Mac mini. I have an M1 Pro MBP 14, that I mainly use for those demands, but it's nice to have the option of a "budget" device to perform when needed. More ram is always a wise decision, but it's safe to say my M1 8GB is fine for my needs.

Great comparison video. I went with the Mac Mini - 16 gigs and 512 gig storage plus a USB-C hub with a 2 TB Samsung SSD. I already had one 27 inch Dell monitor and got one more for two displays. Have been very pleased with the performance and the quality. Also have the Logitech MX keyboard and MX mouse and a high end Logitech camera - so very pleased with this and your recommendations! I was going to get the iMac all in one but really wanted the 30 inch version…..

It was time for me to replace my 2013 21.5" iMac. Since I already had the magic mouse and magic keyboard I decided to get the new Mac Mini M1. I use external drives for my file/video storage so I went with the 256gb storage but upgraded the ram to 16GB and I bought an LG 27" 4K monitor. This new computer is super fast and so far everything is working great. I paid $1,400.00 for the computer and monitor and this includes an extended warranty for the monitor and AppleCare for the computer. If I were to get the new iMac it would have been about $1,900.00. I'm happy with what I got.

For some people it is, the problem is that getting for example a P3 4K monitor is not cheap, so, If you want a Mac mini with hardware similar to the iMac one, it will be maybe near as expensive.

It is not "a lot cheaper". The mac mini is just the cpu box, it does nothing until you spend a whole lot more money. How much more depends on just how much you are prepared to give up. After you add everything missing to the Mac mini, it is only marginally cheaper, or in fact much more expensive, whilst still inferior. I've done the costings and the Mac mini will only save you US$70 or cost you $391 more despite having an inferior substitute display.

I've become and avid viewer and I share them with my wife. I really appreciate you clear and honest approach to reviews. I'm still on the fence my 2012 mac mini is about done and now I just need to make that final choice. I'm just disappointed that m1 IMAC is only 24" but it is a better monitor than I currently have at 27" 2k. Guess I need to get my hands on IMAC to see if I can live with 3 inches less. I'm sorely tempted by the new iMacs. I wanna purple one! But I've been looking at a mini for some time now and will go that route first. I already have a perfectly adequate mouse, keyboard and monitor, also the speaker system we got for our PowerMac G4 dual 450 with Gigabit Ethernet. It's still just fine. I can upgrade each of these as I can afford to. For video calls I'll continue to use my current 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2012), the one with the Superdrive and all the ports. I'll get an external Superdrive for the mini and maybe a new hub. It's my cost-effective entry into Apple Silicon. With luck I'll upgrade to something considerably nicer when it becomes available.

Is it a good idea to get a Macbook M1 and use it as a desktop machine, like 24/7 usage? I like the portability of a laptop for some situations ( 2 or 3 times per month ) and still I need a powerful desktop machine. I don't know if those 2 or 3 times per month worth it to invest on a laptop or its better to invest on a mac mini with more powerful specs.

If you already have a good monitor, a solid keyboard ,mouse and a good sound system or headphones then the Mac mini is the no brainer choice to go for. Unless you are looking for portability, either the MacBook Pro or Air will be fine. Get the iMac if you want a desktop whole setup in one.

that's not true, I bought a 34inch 4k monitor for under 200 with my mac mini. It's larger, runs great, and I have no issues. I have always hated all-in-ones for 3 reasons. One, anything fails, it either hard to replace or have to get an external device. 2. Having the other devices, it's easy to replace if they fail. 3. You can always replace the computer and use your devices if it fails, and you can get whatever size monitor you want to have. Sorry, but 24inch is so 2008, it's 2021, get real APPLE!!!!!

@@ceasar12c The problem is that monitor may be 4k, but its not the same. The color accuracy is the real seller of the iMacs display. The closest monitor is the LG Ultrafine 4k for $700, as its the same display tech. With the Mini, LG display, 1080p webcam, speakers, and apple peripherals, you're already above the price of the iMac.

If my job was high end graphics, I would buy a high end machine, sorry but the Imac is not high end, at best it's middle ground, go out and spend 5 grand if you want a decent graphics machine.

However when color grading, I can assure you, color accuracy can make or break a companies reliability to offer accurate colors. The reason some 4K monitors can be priced so low, is their reproduction of colors is super inaccurate, therefore not made for professionals. I think the iMac is an incredible professional machine, for those who don’t need to spend $5k to achieve their goals.

We also need to see if they fixed the problems the Mac Mini had like slow external storage speeds and bluetooth issues. This will be critical to the iMac's success because if those problems were not fixed completely, it will negatively impact sales.

@@TechGearTalk Yeah but $300 for 1TB is not good value. Most reviews show SSDs getting about 330 MB/s for the 1 TB size which is way lower than you should expect. I ended up using the OWC Envoy Express and adding my own NVME drive to get about 1300 MB/s off the Thunderbolt port.

Reckless, I was in the same boat as you, except my 2017 MacBook Pro just up and died (it had been having battery issues, then it stopped charging, and then it shut off and never came back on). I’ve been using a PC to tide me over and it’s annoying me beyond measure after being in the Apple ecosystem for 10+ years. After watching a bunch of Sagi’s videos, I decided on the M1 Mac Mini. It should arrive on Monday, so I’d be more than happy to tell you what I think of it once I get it up and running.

I actually have a mac mini spec with the 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I am selling it to get the iMac because of the 4.5K display, built in speakers, mic and camera and I am making a trade off by accepting the base 256GB storage and 8GB RAM. I don't do a lot of heavy multi tasking to consider the RAM and then hard drive space is so cheap to add later and I have the 4 ports on the back of the iMac. I can easily expand storage.

I have a late 2013 27” iMac which is now getting too slow to do anything useful without the beach appearing. It’s also not compatible with Big Sur. The monitor is perfectly adequate for my needs. So I’m currently struggling to reach a decision about what to buy for the very reasons you describe. I know the configuration of the Mac I’m after, if I go with the mini, I’ve got the everything but the monitor decided. I think I’m going to get the BenQ SW240, 24”, 100% sRGB, 95% AdobeRGB, 1920x1200 resolution. But I’m waiting to see the 24” iMac screen before I finally decide.

If you already have a monitor and accesories or want to choose your own accessories, you should get the mini. But the imac is the best value for money and convenience. I tried to find a comparable monitor and accessories and pair them with the mini but the total cost and quality just could not match the imac apart from of course the magic mouse. Then there is the convenience. I am too lazy to go and pick all the accessories to make my computer work. I just want to buy it and start working.

personally i'll go for the imac. even tho buying all the accessories seperately isn't an issue for me, i think the imac is GREAT value for the price (might be the first time ive said that about apple lol) why do i think that? well, i tried mix'n'matching windows pc parts to make a custom pc that has the same performance and features as the imac and it came out to around 2k dollars. 4K display, core i7 11700K, nvidia 1650 and some accessories like camera, microphone, keyboard and mouse. even without the accessories, it came at around 1k dollars (still more than the mac mini) maybe i went a bit overboard, idk really but i think i did a decent job matching the performance. i already have a monitor, speaker, keyboard, mouse, camera so the logical option would be to go for the mac mini but whilst at it i decided it might be a good idea to upgrade everything rather than just the computer itself (21.5" 1080p display, the cheapest logitech keyboard and mouse i could find at the local computer store, and speakers that are decent enough). BUT, nothing will be wasted, i will be giving all those things i mentioned to my younger brother (he's like 8, he doesn't need more than a 1080p display and decent speakers)

Mannnnn! I wanted this video to last longer... That's a good sign 😂. Well, you always make us think. There is one thing though not very clear for me yet. You know I got the iMac (27" 5K monitor), the one from last year and it works fine so far, just the other day I was editing a video and it was a long video with many adjustment layers and titles and effects etc and I saw the rainbow ball for the first time, which actually scared me a bit, cause the video was in 4K (not 6K)!... but, and here's the thing, when I got it, I got from amazon some memory, so I brought it up to 32GB with 1TB of SSD. The entry level iMac lacks a second fan. No cooling for the processor side on the iMac. Thus it will run hotter, and the single fans spin more often than the next grade up. This has been coming up in reviews as of late. I wonder just how much you can push it when doing photo editing ( not video ) before it heats up and the fan goes to max, followed by throttling. Oh boy, yet another thing to think about. When going base, the Mac Mini could be a better choice, but then again you miss out on the wonderful monitor, so ??? Not needing a camera -- I have an iPad and iPhone for FaceTime, if need be. If you value the monitor at $500, and a camera at $100, then the Mac Mini and the iMac 2nd level are basically equals, cost wise. The advantage of the Mini is that I could get a Logitech Solar keyboard with the 10K, and the M510 mouse, which I am thinking is better in use ( let me know the error of my ways, if the magic mouse is better ) and a cool little HomePod mini for sound. Should one item fail, the whole PC doesn't have to go in for repair or replacement, with the Mini. My only fear is that the monitor will not work as well, especially for fonts, as scaling with the iMac still renders fonts just fine. The true colors are a plus as well. I doubt I would use the True Tone option, if it works like my phone = yellowish whites in True Tone :( In regard to the singular fan. I do not edit videos, and use more basic photo editors, so I am thinking the thermal issues might not be a concern in the base model. There are other considerations however, such as do I need Ethernet or not? Lots to think over.

The iMac is so lite, the base doesn't hold it down. It moves around a lot. And I don't like the new big WHITE bezel. Now, 24 is too small - so the 27's will be even more expensive. But the mini upgrades come out then too - and the $699 price will not hold as the M1 Pro will be the default chip set.

As much as I wanted to give m1 a try. After doing spreadsheets of both new, used and refurbished iMacs/Mac mini, they are way overpriced. Decided to build a micro itx build that has more RAM,storage and was capable of doing both video editing and 3D modeling. 500 nits is pretty shit for the imac actually considering the price, and a great 4.5k display 500 nits seems too low., need a pro imac model asap.. i ordered the miniled 12.9 ipad not because of the m1 but the miniled is the reason why.. my current i7 15 inch macbook works fine but if they come out with stupid white and/or thick bezels on a macbook, magsafe bs, i will never even consider buying one. iphones need to switch to usb c/thunderbolt. no one wants ten sorts of cables, different cable for your iphone, macbook, ipad, or watch(which i will never buy considering limited cababilities and cable. THANK you for your review, the mac mini seems to be a viable and smart option considering many things.

With the current shortage / price hikes of desktop components, GPU & the best AMD CPUs, a Mac mini might actually come in handy. Its price isn't terrible, and in most cases, you might have all the necessary stuff to have it work in tandem with your desktop, or simply be on a switch on the main display, right from the get go. And since the mac mini got the full sku, 8/8 cpu/gpu, the ram amount is depending on the work you do on it. BTW does Procreate work on the Mac Mini M1, with a wacom cintiq setup? The thought of being able to have a desktop experience of the Procreate drawing/painting app, would be, quite something!

I’ve had a Thunderbolt Display for years. For me, it was a no-brainer. Mac Mini all the way. The only rwal issue I have is with my Mouse dying at login. So I have an extension USB cable which lets me easily replug. (This issue re-surfaced with Big Sur 11.2. Come on, Apple). Coming from a lone time of writing $oftware on the Command Prompt of successive DOS, Windows 95 through Windows XP platforms, and, having successfully ported some of it over to Apple Terminal, I’d say Apple has a long way to go to become a competent software provider. /* end rant

I feel like the IMac is such a great choice for aesthetic offices/users who truly enjoy minimalism The all in one form factor is great for people who aren’t very technical and creative people That said, the Mac mini is very appealing in terms of price and for users who are more used to a “traditional” pc setup Like you said, both have their places and it ends up to personal preference and needs. Thank you for making these videos, they are both informative and fun to watch!
