It will not be the death of us as long as we shift the narrative or perspective of how it should be used. I believe as long as a platform is built to sell stuff, then it will not be for the benefit of community, which is what social media apps preach that they do.

It doesn't mean that you can't drop or need to achieve a degree. You simply need to present and indulge in the ways of academic thinking. I really like that video. Because there are so many people pointing towards Mark Zuckerberg oder Bill Gates saying you don't need to go to college. They did go to some of the best colleges with some of the brightest minds in the world. All they didn't do was acquiring a piece of paper, because they were too busy changing the world.

I have a BS in Anthropology and then I went back and got my nursing associates bc I couldn't find a job. Even though I spent 4 years getting a degree in a subject that does not technically apply to my nursing job now I don't regret it. What he calls "soft skills" and you call 'critical thinking skills" I have always called the "soft sciences". I use the soft sciences when I plan my day, deal with people, listen to the news, debate about healthcare, etc. I use the skills I developed in Anthropology in my nursing job just as much as the skills I developed in nursing school. Also, most of what I've taken away from college came from long discussions with classmates and professors about all sorts of subjects and that is one thing that I could not have taught myself. Best of luck. Only you can decide on the path that fits your dreams and ambitions the best.

In England there is a high school (16-18yo) course called critical thinking, it's somewhat equivalent to half a hardcore subject like physics, sociology, history I guess no one really wants to do it for 2 years instead of a "real" subject. But yeah maybe it would be nice if something was encouraged, without grading or for extra credit without being a whole A-level. Also science studies in UK high school has a section called how science works which is the science focused aspect of critical thinking along with some specifics about clinical trials and experimental design. Anyway yes it is somewhat possible to teach and I think more professors and teachers could faster it day-to-day in many aspects of their teaching. I'd do it with scenarios and maybe debate questions. No right or wrong answers and no test.

I really like the term in French (or at least one of them) for soft skills: savoir-être. This translates literally to "knowing how to be". While critical thinking is a vital part of soft skills, it doesn't totally encapsulate what soft skills are. Knowing how to interact with other people, understanding how to tailor your message for a specific audience, and knowing how to analyze intangibles are all soft skills. Hard skills are important (and I wish I had more of them), and they allow us to accomplish actionable tasks. Soft skills, on the other hand, give us different lenses through which we can view the world. As you said, having a strong combination of hard and soft skills creates a very effective and nuanced person.

Great video Johnny! I myself think very similar even though I'm in a complete different area as you. I studied mechanical engineering in college, it was really hard, but it gave me the tools to understand the world around me. Nowadays I'm a professional brewer with my own small microbrewery which has almost nothing to do with what I studied, I never learned how to run a business or make beer for example, I haven't used much of the "hard" skills I learned through my bachelor's degree, but the way an engineer thinks and decomposes a problem have been of great help. I agree that college needs to give you the tools to think critically, make your own decisions and understand the world and the people in it, the rest you can learn on your own! Love your work keep the videos coming!

Johnny, thanks for helping me push past self-doubt about sticking with college. I’m getting a degree in photography, usually something classified as a hard-skill, a learn as you go type of thing. But I totally agree with you that soft-skills are what push us to take our hard-skills to new heights and achieve past the limits of our imagination. What I’ve learned in class, the sciences of photography, the theory of great photography and great art, is what motivates me to be a better photographer and get better at the hard-skills. Anyways, sorry for the rant, I really just wanted to say thank you for this video and all of your and Iz’s videos! Saludos de Miami🌴✌🏼

Great video, Johnny. Thanks! What you're calling "soft skills," I might call *habits* or *practices* for intellectual curiosity -- and you could call curiosity a *disposition* that makes life richer and more fun. Done right, college forms us to learn on our own -- to wonder about what we observe, craft good questions, spot and test assumptions in other people's explanations, break an argument down and put it back together. Good teachers model these practices, show us how much fun learning is, and, by showing us our potential, inspire us to become more curious and thoughtful.

Johnny Harris: Yeah, because there is definitely a distinction between soft and hard skills, but I don’t see the hard as out of the University realm, neither the soft as characteristically of formal education... Actually sometimes its quite the opposite. I really like your video. You raise this super important topic of formal education, and of inquiry and of critical thinking which I agree happens socially/relationaly and can benefit from being facilitated by a ‘trained thinker’... Your theme is specially important in these times, in which we are re-assessing what is the role of education and which are valid paths to success and the creation of value. So thanks for your reflection and keep them coming.

That is what a degree in geography means to me, it combines courses like social, economic and political geography, while also geoinformatics, karstology, hydrolgeography, pedogeography, sustainable development etc. It makes you see the world from all possible perspectives and gives you enough knowledge to have an opinion or to make a choice where there are multiple and none of them 100 % right in combination of being able to present your ideas. I'm now hyped up to take AB Consular Studies here in the Philippines and I'm very inspired by your career there in Vox in both your editing and journalism skills and most of all your interest in foreign relations which I too love to take a job with relation to it but yeah before seeing this video I'm a bit too doubting whether choosing that course would be too risky considering that it isn't that a popular course plus I don't know anyone who graduated from it and whether my future is secure by taking it so yeah thanks to this video I'm now inspired to take it and let destiny take me wherever it is and hope for the best and thanks for the takeaways about soft skills and hard skills they are very helpful!!! :))

I’m a researcher in educational psychology and typically, soft skills refer to communication skills, as well as people skills such as the ability to work in a team, to problem-solve human problems, or to regulate your emotions. The critical thinking and analytical skills you are talking about are typically referred to as higher-order thinking skills. / Love your work, love this series! Keep it up!

This seems to go along with my own experience, as someone who is transferring from community college to state level with an Associates degree. In lower levels of education we are taught the "hard" skills, the facts and rules, though we also find out specifics on subject we are personally interested in on our own. I went through stages of having interests in several different subjects both before and during college. The college classes taught me how to question facts, methodologies, etc, especially about things learned in lower education. I had a couple of reading/writing and history classes with essays as part of the "general education" requirements of college, and I discovered that I had become more articulate. I've not only addressed writing prompts, but been able to challenge preconceptions encased in the stance of the prompt's writing, which gave me the wonderful experience of being able to challenge the professor's thoughts instead of simply agreeing. Having general knowlege of several different areas that I looked into out of personal interest has also given me the ability to form questions and insights that having a narrower focus of interest simply could not have given.

Think college is a great option. I wasn’t even considered college if it wasnt for soccer then in college is where I fell In love with film as I was tossed into being the video editor in a class. Knowing nothing I was like “what’s this...I love this”. Great video

In my work I call these “prescribed skills” (anything that has a direct cause and effect: “hit this button and get this result”, etc.) and “acquired/acquirable” skills (anything where there’s a result that you want to get to but could take any number of options to get there)

My degree is not directly connected to my job but what I learned in college has helped me do my job better such as communication, writing reports, statistics, and public speaking. Plus I now have a school that can vouch for my work through my diploma.

Barely halfway through the video and I couldn't agree with you more! 110% !! There is no substitute for the critical thinking and world-view 'skills' (or attitude/mindset) you develop in a college atmosphere. The age-old platform of Dialogue. Conversation. Discussion. A lecture class stripped down is just a guided discussion, and there a'int nothing like it! :)

Cool, such a deep and enriching reflection... So, towards alternative labels for those abilities and competencies you were referring to, I suggest: Intelligence/Sensitivity/Timing (soft-skills) + Knowledge/Profiting/Capitalizing (hard-skills) = 💪🏻

I totally agree with this. I went into a trade in college and it’s not the hard skills that landed me my first job, but the soft skills. Employers look for people that have the soft skills they need because it’s easier to work with someone that has these skills and train the technical skills into you than vice versa. It honestly comes down to who you think has the right critical thinking, decision making and social skills to fit into the work environment rather than who has the best technical skills sometimes.

The main drawback of college in the US is the enormous cost associated with it, and not that college is not useful or a worthwhile experience. Education is something that everyone needs access to in order for the brightest minds to develop to their full potential and support the country.

Amen. It’s absurd how expensive it is in the US
@ruukinen
@ruukinen 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnnyharris I mean it's not really absurd that it's so expensive. The fact that most of the cost is on the students themselves is what is absurd. One of the reasons for a government is to educate it's people since it's a task that is very expensive to provide for yourself, think tutors for everything you want to learn, vs providing it to a large amount of people at the same time. It also feeds back into the system since highly educated people are more productive on average.
