Fun fact, they used that same picture of Denny on his only 2 covers. An interesting description I got was, the first cover was positive about him and therefore his countenance made him look "determined". The 2nd cover description is negative from when he got in trouble for something, throwing games I think, and therefore his countenance made him look guilty. As an old collector who put a massive collection together when ebay first came out for pennies, you young guys should start looking for mint subscription copies while they're still affordable. Many labels come off cleanly if you hit em with a hairdryer. I'll bet I peeled the labels off at least ten 1st cover Jordans. I always disclosed the labels as removed when I sold them BTW. I had just shy of 1k feedback with only 1 negative I didn't deserve.

Great video Brad! Totally agree with all guidelines you mentioned for grading. The only thing i look at that is different with subscription issues is “eye appeal”. I am more apt to collect a subscription issue if the mailing label has been carefully removed and does not have significant paper loss.

Very good point, Rick! Subscription issues with label removed cleanly can definitely have some great eye appeal!

I am a fairly new subscriber and love the channel. My family inherited a collection of SIs and Sport Magazines from my father in law from 1950 to the late 70s. Most are newsstands with some subscription. More Sport than SI but many are in great shape. Read, but not abused. It has sparked my interest in the hobby and I have been learning from your videos. I even picked up a few newsstand magazines such as the Ken Boyer 1962 FC, Gary Carter 2nd Cover and a Reggie Jackson from Aug 1980. I followed your advice and confirmed they are newsstand. I am not looking to grade at this time but just like to display them. I am looking to add the 1956 Kaline and Kuenn Newsstand next. I have even done videos on my channel showing the magazine with vintage cards of the same player from that year. Keep up the great work with the channel. Take care, Terry

Awesome! Really cool to hear and thanks for commenting, Terry! Sounds like you inherited a really nice collection. I just ventured to your channel and it looks to be right down my alley with all the sports history and nostalgia. I saw your most recent video with some magazines from 1975 and really enjoyed it. I just subscribed to your channel. Stay in touch!

@@sportsmags Will do, Brad. Thanks for checking my video out. I have been adding more magazines into my videos. My father-in-law was a huge Al Rosen fan. His prize magazine was the 55 SI with Rosen on the cover. He bought it off the newsstand in 1955 and stored it away as a teenager. I did a video on it where I picked up a Rosen card to go along with it. Again, thank you for the excellent videos. They have helped a novice like me understand magazine collecting. I have been going back to watch some of your older ones. I will keep in touch. Best regards, Terry

Thank you for this video, I'm new to getting magazines graded. I have a question about CGC and a news stand SI magazine from September 10, 1990, (2-Issue bonus). This is the 1990 Pro Football Preview with Barry Sanders on the cover, and the other magazine is college football 1990 with Todd Marinovich on the cover. I have this 2-issue bonus SI in the manufacture plastic from the news stand. I didn't want to break the seal, thinking the magazines would be worth more / grade better if I left the Sports Illustrated magazines unopened. My question, can I send to CGC in the Sports Illustrated plastic, or do I need to break the plastic and send the magazines separate so they can grade individual magazines? Any thoughts or advice in this area would be greatly appreciated. I don't have a CGC account, I was thinking of paying to get an account and send off for the grading service.

No problem, glad it helped you. Yes, you would need to go ahead and remove the plastic when submitting and enter them as 2 separate issues. Also, CGC very recently changed their requirements since I made this video. A paid account is no longer required to submit. The paid membership will get you discounted submission prices, but they now have an option for submitting even with just a free account.

Just got gifted two copies of the first issue. Based on your guidelines these would be worth grading regardless since Mathews is in the HOF and its obviously a unique issue. I'm not new to magazine collecting, but new to the grading aspect of it. One is in what I would guess is VG+ condition with all the cards and marketing inserts, the other is the same apart from some unfortunate small scrapes on the back ad. Thanks for any advice!

Congrats! Yes, I believe the 1st issue is worth grading in pretty much any condition. Even a 5.0 sold for $122 the other day. Just make sure you get them pressed before grading.

Great info! Question about subscription S.I. issues: Does it help the value of a subscription issue if it is still in the original plastic sleeve? I have a 2002 Lebron James Rookie "The Chosen One" still in the plastic with the AOL CD for internet included.
@sportsmags
@sportsmags 10 ай бұрын
That's a good question. I actually have never seen one of those. Depending on what's visible and how it looks in the sleeve, I could see it commanding a little more value. Especially if it looks to be in great condition. The sealed AOL disc kind of adds another factor of nostalgia too, in my opinion.

My dad found a 1954 sports illustrated first edition with cards intact, willie Mays card and ray boone along with others while cleaning getting ready to move. How do i even begin? My dad says it's in pristine condition and is giving it to me. It was his dad's magazine. Ive researched it and there's a lot of different prices for different variations. How much without grading can i get for it? Also, who would i take it to to tell me if it's 100 percent legit and not s reprint? Im pretty sure it is but if i sell it online i want to be a trustworthy seller.

I have a 57' Ben Hogan cover that is in decent shape. It is a subscription issue though so based on your analysis its probably not worth grading. Just curious, does the subscription label effect the grade or just the value?
@sportsmags
@sportsmags Жыл бұрын
If it's in good condition it could still potentially be worth grading. The label does not typically affect the actual grade--just the value.

Are there any hard cases to display 8.5x11 magazines?

I've seen people user magazine-sized toploaders like you would for sports cards. Here's an example: ultrapro.com/products/9-inch-x-11-inch-thick-magazine-toploaders-10ct?variant=29477308039246&currency=USD&gclid=CjwKCAiAqt-dBhBcEiwATw-ggCKvZWSOuslMPr4EMrlWTO4fmIUAoKsbTSuUv0lra19WsX0rptgRBhoClyQQAvD_BwE A lot of people also squeeze them into picture frames, which I don't particularly recommend as it will likely damage the magazine. Once graded, the CGC slab itself makes for a pretty nice display. @cgcsportsillustrated also has a nice video about displaying magazines. Check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2SYg2x4qph_oKM
