Extreme Philly Fishing i had a question i was wonder why or do they when they take stocked fish they make it where they cant reproduce why do they do that and are they supposed to be helping the fish population get bigger but by doing that they cant produce on the wild why do they do that?

Peyton Ledesma generally to keep the Wild population pure genetically. They don’t want the planters breeding with the natives and ruining the species

highly doubt there is a native rainbow left hardly anywhere anymore.. nonetheless on the east coast.. when you look at 'native trout' they typically remain less than 8 inches or so.. most all the big trout, even here in the west, with a few exceptions (lahontan cutthroat anyone?) are stocked. remember, to the haters, that those trout GIVE A REASON FOR PEOPLE TO BUY FISHING LICENSES. this supports things like game and fish law enforcement, habitat restoration, etc. to me, anything to get more people to pay wardens' salaries etc is an improvement.. here in CA where fishing is under constant attack, they keep passing regulations that encourage less and less people to buy a license, go fishing, get out with the family etc.. bad times for the sport for ALL OF US, regardless of what we believe. CA dfg has a 3M$ shortfall this year, and CA has the same number of fisherman as Minnesota with half the number of hunters, despite SEVEN TIMES THE POPULATION (or thereabouts). bodes FAR ILL for the future of CA fisheries in any case.. you folk back east, enjoy public agencies that put in all this effort on your collective behalf..

My opinion on it is 100% take them home. They feast on native species and it makes me sad lol. I have found several darters in stockie’s stomachs. I’m not blaming them for reducing the population but they’re having an impact on the ecosystem that I don’t like. They’re causing lots of people to visit the creek each day, and those same people unfortunately also trash and pollute the creeks while fishing for them, which I believe is another reason for the natives disappearing. Not too sure, I’m going to write my final research paper for the year on this topic and I’ll learn the full impacts everything has on the ecosystem, from stocking, to trash in the creeks

TheMasterCasters you make a good point that stocked trout can hurt the surroundings of the stream, due to popularity. Another thing to consider is that stocked trout are delicate. And I've seen the trout stocked pond near me in the summer. There is just about no oxygen. So a lot of pond trout will die anyway. In streams, though, the trout have a better chance of survival
@DrDemento456
@DrDemento456 6 жыл бұрын
Fully agree they have a huge impact on the streams used to catch smallmouth at this one creek spot big ones too like 15 inches. After they introduced it to stocked trout I haven't caught a single smallmouth. I would also catch other species as well suckers, largemouth and even rock bass (connected to the river) but lately just suckers are the only ones I snag.
@TheMasterCaster
@TheMasterCaster 6 жыл бұрын
DrDemento456 yeah same. I’ve noticed the smallmouth population has declined, but I don’t know if that correlates to the trout stockings

I grew up on Ridley Creek, just outside of Media, PA. The state would stock the creek below the dam at the Media Water Works (Baltimore Pike), sometimes up to a month before opening day. I would go with my Dad and his buddies and "catch & keep" the stocked trout, mostly Rainbow Trout. Inline spinners, salmon eggs and Velveeta Cheese rolled into a small ball were the baits of choice (no Power Bait back then). The fishermen all pooled their catch and made a bottom smoker out of an old upright freezer and smoked the trout. The families would later get together for a "picnic" with a bunch of side dishes and the smoked trout as the entree. It was a great "pick, pull and eat" picnic with the smoked trout. Good times and delicious meals plus some great "stories" of the big ones that got away. Thanks for your videos. They are excellent, especially since all of the videos are realistic. I also have had many "skunked" days fishing.

Great video, man. Guys like you have helped spark my "need" to get out and do more fishing. You even reminded me about my old micro-fishing rig I set up last year and never had a chance to go try due to moving. On the question whether or not to take stocked fish. I'm all for the taking of stocked fish. They are generally bred in large quantities, and from what little bit I remember from my ichthyology class, they can actually possess altered genetics due to farms wanting fish that produce more offspring, more quickly. It's part of the reason why there are many places that don't want to set up breeding facilities for paddle-fish, they want to keep the fish as wild as possible so they go out and catch the males and females, surgically remove the eggs, and "milk" the males for the hatcheries (at least the one I got to visit a few years back in Tishomingo Oklahoma. If you ever get a chance to go to a hatchery that does mass work with endangered or threatened species, do it. It's an awesome experience. The Southwestern Native Aquatic Resources & Recovery Center works with around 14 endangered/threatened species and is pretty sweet, from what I've heard. It's in Dexter, New Mexico. (You could do a trout excursion out in NM, and pass by the hatchery, I think they do tours for the public from time to time..lol)

There is certainly a lot of controversy around stocked Trout. The whole purpose of stocking is for people to catch them, keep them and eat them. The states raise these fish at a farm to stock streams and lakes for licensed fishermen to catch and keep. Most people also realize that these stocked fish have a very low survival rate during the hot summer months. If the heat of the summer doesn't kill them, most will get eaten by birds and other predators like raccoons. I release almost all of the stocked Trout that I catch so that someone else can catch them and keep them. Every so often my parents like me to keep a few for them to eat. As far as native Trout go, I ALWAYS release native Brook Trout that I catch. Native Brook Trout populations seem to be dwindling so I do all that I can to ensure their survival.

100% keep, most streams where stocked fisheries are afforded to anglers reach a summer temp that aren't compatable with the non native trout. So the angler keeps and kills or the summer heat. Great channel Leo, we (my family) really enjoy your videos.

Personally, if I’m fishing for stocked trout, they’re going on my stringer. I do my best to identify and release any wild trout I catch. Stocked trout aren’t hardy enough to be caught and released repeatedly anyway

I live by a very nice lake here in utah that's called "fish lake" (really original I know) but it's a huge body of water with monster fish in it. Everyone fishes there and it's stocked twice a year (I think, at least once) to help boost the natural population, it seems like you end up getting half stocked and half natural, indicated by differing meat colors

Most of us enjoy watching folks like you, EPF. Stocked fish are for the people en most cases. Sure there are times where they are trying to re-introduce a species into specific waters. But, that is very rare. It's no different than a hunting license.

My take on it because I’m an avid trout fisherman in Pa is that I usually catch and release. There are many reasons for this. First is that if I kept every fish I caught I wouldn’t be able to fish long most days. Another reason I don’t keep very trout is because I wouldn’t be able to eat them all and they would go to waste. I enjoy catching trout later into the season and if you keep every fish there will be no fish in the stream in no time. I only keep fish 15 inches plus because those are size I think are the best to eat and in pa you don’t catch many that size so I’m very selective in my harvesting of trout in pa

The PA DCNR Stocks the Ponds, Lakes, And Creeks around here, and we have fished in mostly ponds, two of the ponds they stock the trout in get deeper then 10 feet, one has an average depth of about 12 feet the other about 5 feet, one is a dammed creek that the creek channel drops to about 20-30 feet because its a cliff that leads to the creek bed the other has deep pockets and is a natural Pond should we release the trout in these two areas?

Stocked trout, especially the ones you describe should be kept. I mean, that's why they all call it a "put and take fishery". The trout they stock are 14 plus inches and already good eating size. Likewise, as you mention the habitat is not suitable for them and they can't reproduce. People sometimes just few things as black and white.
