Business partnerships are common in most successful organizations. However, we must remember that we should never enter into a partnership for the wrong reasons before reaching a certain level of success. Although I don't necessarily have a business partner, establishing a partnership can be very similar to marrying someone - it can be great when done right. Still, it can also be awful without transparency and trust. So in this episode, I will be sharing with you some insights and resources that I guarantee will help unravel what you need to learn regarding partnerships. So join me to discuss what makes or breaks a successful business relationship.
“There has to be very clearly defined and written out and mutually agreed upon plus regularly revisited doctrine or maxims or principles. It has to be put together on a timeline that says ‘this is where we want to end up.”
- Keith Kalfas
Why do you have to listen to today’s episode.
01:35 - Gino Wickman’s books are of great help. Start by reading “Traction,” where you can get hyper-specific tips on the how-tos of business partnership.
02:44 - Also, read the book “Own Your Own Corporation.” This will help you avoid engaging in a partnership for the wrong reasons.
04:12 - Aside from Traction, Gino Wickman has this book called “Get a Grip.” Here, you’ll learn about the importance of a visionary-integrator relationship.
06:17 - Have a partnership rooted in trust, transparency, and effort. Codependency negatively could ruin all things you’ve worked hard for.
10:48 - True partnership’s essence occurs between alpha people who can be productive through transparent conversations.
13:24 - Alpha people actually care. It’s just that different people communicate in different ways. Make sure you have a mutual agreement. Know where you both want to end up.
Key Takeaways
“A lot gets lost in translation when you’re just dealing with verbal and a handshake. Things have to be discussed on the front end and from a place of trust, but then behind has to be some binding agreement.”
“A lot of times, when people are trying to partner up with other people, they’re doing it for the wrong reasons; hence, being afraid of being able to do it completely on their own, that they need somebody else that’s ride or die with them because they’re afraid to take the journey by themselves. But most of the people I met that become really successful take that lonely journey by themselves, and they step into the fear of the unknown.”
“When there’s a partnership where you need each other or you’re codependent in a negative way, just think about how that’ll exacerbate in the long run. It will be a frickin’ nightmare. It’ll be something that is not fun at all, and you’re stuck in it.”
“Different people communicate in different ways. If you have a partnership, especially in a business, you got to be ready to deal with that person on a level behind all the layers of the job if you want the business to move forward. Because sometimes, it’s not about the business moving forward; it’s just about somebody feeling comfortable, their ego, what they want, or what’s going on in their personal life.”

A billionaire co-founder of a corporation gave me some good advice on partnerships. Always have clean and concise divorce papers drawn before you start. Also, have individual responsibilities for each partner and hold them accountable for their part in the company.

Sometimes you will make insane money. One day I made $1000 in an hour just ripping small trees out with a skid steer. Never be afraid to charge more :)

Great video I appreciate it. I have been doing lawn sprinkler repair and installation for 10 years and grinding on the weekends building up clients and getting my name out there, last year was my first year not working for a company and going completely on my own. I had tons of work from landscapers, property managers, Home owners, for example 1 property manager gave me 16 large commercial properties to maintain all their sprinkler system accounts overwhelmed is a understatement. and it’s hard to find knowledgeable employees to join a new company when you don’t have all those benefits and cash flow that big businesses have so I did get a partner with a lot of knowledge. but when it came down to purchases I bought everything 2 service vans ditch witch 410 sx all the branding of the business advertising logos repairs and maintenance, insurance. and had all the responsibilities, I sold 250k worth of jobs I had the position of 5 people vs him just doing the work it didn’t equal out to what I was paying him percentage wise vs what i was putting in, I would never go into business with anybody again lesson learned I ended up just hiring employees I wanted to here what others perspective and experience was like thanks Keith I’m in Michigan to btw I see your trucks every now and then.

Keith I know pricing is different in all parts of the country but today I bid on a block retaining wall job that was 2’ tall and 60’ long. Customer said they’ve gotten several bids and I was telling a buddy what I was thinking about charging for it. I was thinking around 10k and a friend in the business (who wasn’t bidding) said I was crazy and he would charge 30k easy for it. Thoughts? Have had ppl tell me I’m giving away work, the toughest part has been finding the sweet spot of what to charge where you make good money but don’t gig the customers. Any tips or videos on estimating would be great. As for partnering with friends on jobs, it seems that around here most people are nervous about joining forces because I guess everyone thinks everyone else is out to screw them over.

You are right. people seeing you not scare to go out to the unknown and not failing, and doing multiple skills jobs . they think they can become partners is like holding people hands and showing how it's done then they will compare themselves with the same level of knowledge then this same people you hold hands will want a higher pay that the company can't even afford. I'm the kind of guy that imnot afraid of doing any job. must of the people out there can't. I'm really afraid of bringing somebody on board then fail its been 6 years since I started my business and its been a good learning experience.

I tried a partnership, never AGAIN. Unless you are an excellent communicator, have excellent organizational skills, book keeper, kick ass contracts and an attorney. I would never go into a partnership. Excellent content, must check out those books!

My current business partner is broke. We have been partners for 2 years. I own both trucks and I bought a dump trailer with cash. He has only went 50 50 on tools and that's it. He is kinda lazy. My employee say he sits around when I'm not there. And would rather have employee do the work. He doesn't know pavers turf or stacking block wall... but we had the same amount of training

I'm in the middle of this very exact situation. I put in ALL the money and purchased a huge customer list of 70 homes with equipment, etc and he came with just 7homes...Now we're just at war since he's allowing his personal life intervene, spending all his money, and we've lost several properties due to him not showing up. So I want him out...He NOT on EIN but only as VP on LLC. Mistake is we didnt do any legal agreement; just by mouth. So How do I get him out!? Can I just sell and ge done?

During these rough economical times you may fair better if you can find a honest hardworking partner and can draw up a fair and reasonable agreement that is legal.

When I started my fence company I almost had a partner but we decided against it. 2 years later I’m so glad I didn’t have this guy as a partner. He went haywire and the business would not have lasted more than a few months

I dont think employers, if one decides to be an employer, should also try to be a counselor. To me in a way, taking on employees is like taking on a partner.
