If using hp on the master with a plugin, make sure to use a filter that has the option of being set to linear phase (such as pro q 3). Otherwise the phase of the signal at the filter crossover point will be fucked with, which can cause phase issues and additional volume you dont want.

This can also stack up over time in your mix if youre hping a lot of stuff as well.

I can't stand the phase shifting sound on sharp low cuts some engineers use. Post-ringing can make sharp bass transients sound 'zappy', and if they use linear phase that cause pre-ringing, that sounds even worse. You're totally right about using your ears. So many engineers (both mix and master) develop habits they do without thinking/listening. Always good to confirm 'why' you're doing something, 'if' you need to do it.

Thanks! Yeah a long time ago. I think I found a loop from splice and just added a kick, snare and hats several years ago. Might have to finish a full version, maybe even master it properly.

Good video! Why do you say analog gear can be more forgiving? Surely if you match the eq curve and not mess up the phase relations it makes no difference? Not trying to be a smart@ss, just curious.

I actually have no idea why. It just sounds ‘less processed’ to me and seems easier to make sound tight without thinning out. Probably a combination of the shape of curves, analogue colour and no dsp. But yeah as I said, not too sure, just know that’s how I hear it.

Just… don't high pass an entire mix, it's a stupid idea. Best case you fuck up your phase way into the mid range, worst case you introduce some pre-ringing that smears up your transients. Fix these issues in the mix. If you really have to "tighten up" your low end use a bell curve instead.
