Should You Listen to Music While Studying?

Studying is very boring, especially if it's for a subject which you absolutely despise. To fend off this boredom, many of us listen to music like rap, classical, or jazz, but do they help you or hurt you when you study?
This is kind of contradictory. On one hand, music distracts you from studying but on the other hand, it makes studying much more enjoyable, so you won't be as likely to fall asleep on your textbook.
The real answer is that studying with music should only be done if the music has no lyrics. The lyrics confuse our brain's language processing center and thus hurts our ability to process either what we are reading or chipmunking.

When I study without music my brain starts to think about random things that are not the things I'm studying, so I like to listen to music to stay focused. I'm going to try classical music this time, thank you for the advice!

Chewing gum, listening to classical music that is not completely calm or exciting but in between the two helps you focus while not getting sleepy, eating fruits or something you enjoy very much before and after studying, and studying in a comfortable place are all things that help me. Ron Jamal Bruce I checked their sources and they did cite that classical music aides in learning. Another one of their citations provides relatively new data that supports the hypothesis that rhythmic music hinders learning. Ultimately, I think this topic is a bit more controversial than I initially thought.Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

This video is very true I had to cram for a midterm for probability and statistics and I just put on a classical music station and let it play from start to finish. I did pretty well on the test because i was able to focus on the things I was memorizing. It helps to pick very long songs then study one thing during that song. Then when you take the test think of the song you listened to while studying that part and you'll remember it much easier.

hey I am bilingual and I found that listening to music thats in my first language while studying in my second language wasn't that bad, however when listening to music and studying in the same language was distracting, would this have to do with the different hemispheres of the brain mandating for certain tasks? thank you, and great video !

I can as long as it's some sort of quiet piano music. I can't concentrate if it's edm, dubstel, or it has lyrics. But music actually does help me concentrate

Also HEAR is my technique: Put on this play list: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2Knk6xrhNiea9k and close everything else, close the monitor screen and but a water bottle in front of the monitor's power button. Every time you would go to open the screen, drink water instead. When you're done all water, you can take a break. Water levels may vary.

No not really, it has too much of a volume/intensity change in the music - if you're looking for something electronic try deep house

I agree with @michaelKoletsas. Dubstep may be distracting for reasons other than lyrics. The constant spikes in volume and pitch may distract from studying and interrupt one's concentration. I hope this helps!!! :)

+Lad Life Ummm... distraction comes from stimuli that attract and steer your attention away from your work. So, I guess it depends. Does the improved performance from your enjoyment of the music outweigh the possible distractions that come from the music? Personally, I enjoy listening to heavy rock blues while doing my work and it seems to help with less creatively taxing tasks.
