The viscosity of lubricants change with the temperature .The cables I had put lube inside became sluggish and locked at - 10 but when I brought the bike inside the cables worked fine again . Now I use a very thin lubricant sparingly and thats suited for lower temperatures.

I use Bike-Aid Dri-Slide on cables and housing. It will drain through full-length housing if you set it up right. Won't attract dust/dirt/grime and makes shifting and braking feel like new. Works in mechanical shifters as well.

The most common reason is people are too proud to admit they need more than a 28 and would rather tackle a 12% gradient at 65rpm but also, in this case, he would need a longer derailleur cage or a hanger link to accommodate it

It's not really a problem using a 28T per se, but when you get tired and can no longer produce that power, then you need a bailout. I've never done it but you can get all sorts of easy gearing if you use a derailleur link, 36+

@@SD1266 - Shimano are pretty conservative with their tooth capacities. You should be able to run a 30 with a 105 short cage without any problems (I tried it on someones bike over the Christmas period and it worked without any adjustment). I have 105 medium cage on my bikes with a 32, and I'm going for a 34 this summer.

@@terryshaw1792 yeah, true. I think I heard people even running a 32 with a short cage, even if you have to wind in the b-screw all the way or even get a longer one. Think a 34 is the max recommended for a medium but the same hack can be used too

Hi Jon, I have tried putting 2 ultegra chains in 2 separate glass jars filled with diesel. One i left in for about 6 months (chain A) and one still being soaked for at least a year (chain b) now. I shake it once in a while hopefully it will knock off more grime off the chain. I tried brushing chain with just diesel and a steel brush. Latex gloves I was wearing melted and was not as clean as I want it to be. Ended up using laundry powder/detergent and was able to get it spotless. Not my usual cleaning method but just wanted to experiment. Also I noticed that ultegra cogs dont get shiny some parts of the 105 cogs do get shiny with a steel brush. Yes I don't suggest diesel unless they plan to soak the part "long" term

If you ride in below 0 degrees Celsius temperature and if your cables are housed in such a way where water enters, then you should consider flushing your cables with wd-40 from time to time. Riding in sub zero temps with moisture in the housing can lead to cables freezing. This has happened to me a bunch of times, mostly on on my back brake. My solution was to order some cable oilers, fit them at about where a barrel adjuster would go, and periodically flush with wd-40. No stuck brakes and keeps them running well all Canadian winter long.

Hi John, I find white spirit works well as a degreaser. Not quite as bad as diesel or petrol, it's cheaper, just dispose of the waste at the local recycle depot.

Do you consider that grease that comes on new Shimano chains to be a decent lube for riding? I would say that stuff is more appropriate for offshore oil rig applications or trapping gold in a sluice box.

Add long nose ferrules and the matching rubber sockets as used on cross bikes Keeps all the dirt out of your housing. Use slick cables, and don't add lube which attracts dirt

It's paired to a 10spd Sram GX rear derailleur. I looking at subcompact because I ride in an area with lots of steep mountains trails. I wasn't able to find any on Sram's website. pre lubed cables (especially shimano) tend to fuzz up at the slightest of nicks or scratches. i would advise anyone to avoid them entirely, a decent polished set of stainless inners and a drop of dry lube from any brand gives you great performance and lasts years if you look after your bike properly :D

This weekend I went to put a bottle cage back on my CX bike and found that the ‘Rivnut’ (think that’s what it’s called), that the bolt screws into has come loose. So trying to unscrew the bolt from the bike just spins the Rivnut in the frame. I was able to get the bolt off by holding it with a pair of pliers while gently turning the bolt - but long term I guess this needs replacing? Is that something you can do at home? Jon! Love the channel. My question, my rear hub has cartridge bearings and I noticed when I'd spin the wheel on the hub, the bearings didn't spin freely and felt tight and grinding, thinking they needed replacement, or regreasing I popped them out of the hub, and now the bearings spin freely when I rotate them with my fingers. What's going on? Is the interface of the outer bearing and the hub too tight? If I press them back in, are they just going to be too tight again? Thanks for your help!

Is the interface of the outer bearing and the hub too tight? YES. Try getting 'C3' designated bearings they have a slightly greater amount of play in them which is taken up by the interference fit compressing the outer race when you install them. The 'C3' bearings are usually for high speed/temperature applications. I had the same on a HOPE hub, now smooth as butter. HTH

@@nigelnightmare4160 Thanks for the info. I decided to pull out the bearing seal and noticed that the grease was contaminated (black) so I flushed it out and regreased it. It was still smooth in my fingers, but reinstalling it, it was back to feeling grinding. Pulled it out and replaced it with a new bearing and everything feels smooth. I think pressing in the bearing just made it more obvious that the bearing was worn under compression.

On a different subject, but still tech related, do you know if any frame manufacturers have looked into using Giga steel (now being used in the automotive industry)? It's much stronger and allegedly lighter than ordinary steel. I wonder if it's competitive with carbon or aluminum?

There is a cheap cable lubricator tool you can buy instead of struggling trying to spray stuff down you cable. Flush with wd40, apply new lube.

#askGCNTech Hi Jon. I unfortunately had a crash on my good summer bike a few months ago which left me unable to ride for a couple of months. I have come back in the winter on my older 10 speed shimano geared bike. As my summer bike has suffered some bad scuffing to the Sram Rival 22 brake levers I am considering replacing these to get the bike looking perfect again. I would then use the scruffed shifters as the heart of a new11 speed groupset for my winter bike but can I use a 10 speed shimano chainset with a SRAM 11 speed chain and derailleur? The 10speed chainset is only a few months old and so in very good condition. Thanks in advance.

#ASKGCNTech so I was an idiot and got a 11-30 cassette when upgrading my bike from 8 Speed Triple to 9 Speed Triple with a 50-39-30 front ringset I believe the rear derailleur has medium cage and I have found that the bike sometimes slips gears when shifting have tried to re-index but get the same issue do I need to buy a Shimarno MTB reardealiure to use these ratios or will simply a Rear Derailleur Hanger Extender like the £5 one that SJS have fix the issue?

JON! Here's one for you: Can i run a Dura Ace 7800 drive-side crank with an XTR 960 non-drive side arm? (long story short- put the 7800 crank on my BMX bike [68mm BSA BB], but the non-drive side arm came precariously close to the chain stay.) #askGCNTech Hi, i have a bike with hydraulic brakes and aluminum handlebars. I want to replace handlebars for carbon ones and run brakes inside the bars. What is the proper procedure to do so? Should I drain the brake fluid first, install and reconnect everything, fill with mineral oil and bleed brakes? Is there any easier way around? Shortcut?

I'm afraid there probably aren't any shortcuts in your case!

1. Disconnect the hoses at the levers. 2. If SRAM hoses, unscrew the silver barb CCW and cut off 2mm from the end. If Shimano, cut off the barb and olive as close to the end as possible. 3. Remove the flange nuts that no longer have the olive in the way. 4. Screw in Park Tool IR-1.2 to the end of the housing. 5. Pull IR-1.2 through the new bars. 6. Put the flange nut back on and install NEW Shimano or SRAM barb/olive. 7. Install levers onto new bars and hand tighten the flange bolt into levers before fully tightening. 8. Burp brakes. Or take it to a shop and pay $100.

Be carefull mixing with GRX because the front derailleur and the front crank needs to be GRX only, all the others components can be mixed but I repeat myself: GRX crank will work only with grx derailleur.

Great question! You may well have poorly indexed gears in which case we have plenty of videos that show you how to index gears here's one 👉gcntech.co/index If that doesn't work it might be that your derailleur hanger has been bent slightly due to all of your crashes! In which case it might be best to visit a local bike shop to find out how to straighten it or where to buy a new one!

11-25 to 11-28 it can be done without adding two more link just make sure you dont large - large extreme gear or you should try it out first and see the chain is long enough already

#askGCNTech Hi Jon, I still see so many people discussing whether it is better to buy an aero or a lightweight bike. However, if I am not wrong, the only asset of aero bike is its shape, when the advantage of lightweight bike is just its weight. These two parameters do not go against each other and can be easily combined together. Or is there some other secret that differentiate these two types of bikes? I often see a brand offering a bike labeled as aero and another bike labeled as lightweight for the very similar price and surprisingly, when I look at parameters, there is nearly no difference in weight (eg. Canyon Aeroad vs. Ultimate). Thank you for clarifying this :)

@GCN Tech... just looking at the Whimis info for Morgan Blue Chain Cleaner. It contains Fattyalcohol C10 -14, ethoxylated, as well as 2-butoxyethanol and Naphta heavy (low boiling point hydrogen treated). The 2-butoxyethanol is on "schedule 1" of Canada's Toxic substances list. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend it as it will kill you quicker eating than a plant-based diet.

#askGCNTech! Why hasn't Shimano , or some other enterprising 3rd party, programmed a fully-automatic gear system for their Di2? Surely with Ant+ / Bluetooth they could use the cadence sensor to change gear? Have a user set point and deadband, I would use 85 +/- 4 so that going up a slope, at 80rpm the gear would change down, and once over the top it would change up at 90rpm. You never have to worry about changing gear again. One button could then be used to go into manual mode - bit like the Tip-tronic system, in case you need to go into synchronous mode for some reason. Any reason why that wouldn't work? If not could you please arrange it.

Soaked my shifter & brake cables in motor oil then put them thru full length cable housing. Been silky smooth and great for 3yrs on the same cable set. I have inspected them for dirt and grime but they are still pretty new looking. "It's a bike, ride it. Quit being so anal about it."

You are wrong. You can't mix all components of GRX & Ultegra. The chainline differs by 2.5 mm so you can't use GRX front mech with any other crankset than GRX. If you are using standard road crankset (of any brand) you need to use Ultegra front mech

Sorry, but using diesel or petrol to clean the chain is not harmful for the environment. Not more harmful than riding a car that is. Of course provided you dispose the fluid correctly afterwards and do not use your kitchen sink for it.

Ceramic bearings are silly. Why spend a fortune trying to save something FAR short of one watt? Seriously, one watt is equal to one newton. 1N= 1kg*m/s².. Think about that for a while. The force required to accellerate 1KG 1METER in a Square second. You're NOT saving one watt when it doesn't even take 0.1 watt to spin the crank arm with a regular bearing. I MIGHT accept that waxing your chain saves you one watt compared to a dirty one, but that's it. Now there ARE reasons to choose ceramic bearings, and those reasons are if you are part of a team that has a dedicated mechanic that dissasembles your bearings and clean them and replace the lube after every ride, then the life time warranty is actually valid, other than that you're just buying something that you are not going to take care of like the manufacturer recomends, and warranty claims will be denied, making you look like a fool. Ceramic bearings last your entire life if maintained after every ride, you lot will not do this. But it's not my money, in fact i urge you to buy everything you can, maby one day i will come across a cheap tricked out bike because one of you made too many poor decicions.

Gasoline is a great degreaser. There is no enviromental impact of using 10 oz of gasoline and draining it in your yard the petrochemicals breakdown by bacteria over time.
