Hi it is nice living here Morganton I came up here from Miami Florida to visit a friend back in 2006 and in 2007 I found myself living up here it is beautiful and the cost of living is fair I recommend that people come up this way to get out of those big cities like Miami Florida New York Chicago and the weather up this way is beautiful a little bit of cold a little bit of Summer a little bit of spring a little bit of fall it's nice I love it so I've been here since 2007 up until 2018 Happy New Year

I grew up near Pilot Mountain, NC, ((very close to "Mayberry" , actually Mount Airy), but after living in San Diego and Virginia Beach, ended up just outside of Winston-Salem. My daughter graduated from Appalachian State University, and now she and her family live in Lenoir. My SIL works in Morganton at Broughton Hospital. They love it up there! They are very happy with the cost of living and a safe place to raise their children. And, there's still a huge influx of people moving into all areas of NC. The cost of housing and land has increased exponentially. It's sad because it prices locals out of the market, compared to what people moving in from up north can afford to pay.

I agree - land and housing is through the roof lately. Hopefully that issue will smooth out over time. My wife and I really like the area. Thanks so much for watching and sharing a nice comment!

Thank you! Is so funny that you posted this just as I am seriously thinking about retiring in NC!!! This really helped me in a positive way. Having myself a diverse ethnic background can you tell me if there is any racial tension in Rural NC?
@tonyleeglenn
@tonyleeglenn 8 жыл бұрын
As you know there are racist tendencies almost everywhere, but that said - I don't see it so much here. Everyone seems to get along really well. The racial mix in the Catawba Valley is fairly diverse - still mostly white, but with most other races significant and present. Don't think that racism is ever escapable though - and I'm talking about people from all sides of the spectrum. What I can say is that if you're nice to people here, they'll pretty much without fail be nice to you. By the way, I'm guessing you're Italian Augustin - Valdese was settled by Waldensian folks from the Italian Alps - so you really might like the culture and heritage here.

Hi Tony. I don't know if you're still responding to messages on this video, but I've got a question about Morganton because my wife and I are seriously considering relocating there for retirement because we have family there. I notice the guitars and amps behind you. I'm an old (68) blues guitarist that loves to jam. Are there any blues jams happening around Morganton?

Sure are opportunities to play Mal. Lot's of musicians around. I'm in a gigging band now, and it's a challenge. Much opportunity for connecting with other players though. You'll love the area I think.

Tony, I am a native of Marion and lived four years in Morganton in the early 1990s. I also lived in Black Mountain for several years but now I am back in Marion. I can't get over your backhanded comment about Marion and how you passed over it as if there is nothing there at all. Perhaps you should take another look at Marion and see how much we have progressed in the past two years! It is booming now with pubs, a craft brewery, a music halls, shops, a artisan ice cream parlor and lots of public art. We have another brewery, a meadery and a municipal event center in the works. We had our Bigfoot Festival which got nationwide coverage on CNN and NPR. Marion is awesome and keeps moving forward!

Great Video, I agree with most of what you have said. I moved my family to Morganton from Kannapolis/Concord. Yes this is one of the best kept secrets in NC. We live in the South Mountain State Park off hwy 64 side. There is no way we could have built the house we have with the views we have anywhere else in NC. I work in Charlotte and drive there daily and yes it's a ways to drive each day but worth it! Even though the median home price in Morganton is 110k you can get homes in the millions here. We built a 4200sf Log home at 2780ft above sea level in the state park/game lands with views all the way to the black mountains and lake lure. We love the town and the folks we have gotten to know and have slid right into the community. I know more of my neighbors and do more with them (my nearest neighbor is 1 mile away) than i did living in a gated 300+ home community. Food, social gatherings, music (i played TGIF Friday with Rated PG Band) (See videos im the drummer). What a great place and Love 100 Main in Valdese..

You can find affordable places in Asheville if you work in healthcare. Asheville could possibly become the Austin of NC. Morganton is VERY sociopolitically VERY conservative. I inserted enough “very” in there, I hope, to convey, having lived in both towns, Asheville is GREAT. Music, arts, peoples’. attitudes toward change-Buncombe County is progressive. Burke County is . . . Hmm. Just not. (Yes; I’ve lived in Austin and Manhattan etc.) “Go west.”

Love this! Thank you! ... We are planning to move to the Southeast in 2 to 3 years. My oldest son and his family plan to move within the next year. ( from Arizona!! ) The declining water tables here have been a growing concern for the past 10 years. We are in a "20 year drought "... but at this point , IMO, it's not a drought anymore. Drought's are a temporary thing . The drought that caused the dust bowl lasted 10 years. Let's face it, this is the "new normal"! I want to have a garden without having a $200. water bill every month all summer. ($40. in the winter) And that doesn't even give us much to show for it. It just keeps everything alive. We are doing a lot of research first. before we sell... *** Anyone want to chime in and let us know what areas to avoid that would be awesome.!! * ( Low crime, clean ground water, good growing soil, not in flood zone and few restrictions. ) We aren't picky ... Lol NW North Carolina, NW South Carolina, SW Virginia, East Tennessee, N. Georgia. At lest an acre. With a creek would be awesome. Under $40,000. a fixer upper. Or torn down, as long as it has hookups so we can live in an RVV or small mobile. We are retired so jobs and schools aren't a concern.

As a South Florida resident who is looking for a retirement area that is also affordable in a beautiful location [hopefully with a mtn view, but not in the mountains (we saw what happened to Gatlinburg area after vacationing there last Fall with the horrible fires)] your videos are very helpful. For some time now, I've felt an inexplicable pull toward the Hickory-Catawba Valley area, although I didn't know anything about it. Hey Chalice. There's much industry moving back to the Catawba Valley. I'm betting your son would be able to find a good job here. I'd just have to talk with you to explain some options. The valley is near the mountains. From Morganton you can be in some of the most dramatic vistas in Western NC in about 40 minutes - but still go down to Charlotte in an hour. I live on a low mountain south of Valdese, and can actually see the big buildings of Charlotte 50 miles away. You'd just have to visit some time to see what the area is really like. There are probably at least a dozen families that have moved here since watching my videos. I don't think any one has been sorry. TLG

Especially all the places we used to go to "get away "... unfortunately the internet has ruined local gems. Once a place gets its own facebook page is ruined. Just like Wilson's Creek. They hauled 37k lbs of trash out past year and now they have shut it down on certain weekends bc of the overflow of ppl. I'm about at the point in agreeing with having to have permits. Unfortunately most of the ppl who trash the place or cause trouble are not locals. Although I was joking in a way I do feel like it's only getting worse with more ppl coming.

Agree on the Wilson Creek points. We went up there two years ago on July 4 and there were thousands of people crawling in that area. There was trash everywhere. I would guess that 95% of the folks causing the mess were not from this region.

Love these videos!!! We are hopefully relocating by February to the area. We initially were looking towards Hendersonville but are now looking closer to Statesville. Do you know anything about the school systems in the Hickory or Morganton area? I have a 13yr old son who is quite shy! I have done some research, but have found first hand accounts a little more reliable! Thanks for the great videos!!!

I don't know much about Hickory, but I gather the schools there are good. I work for a hospital system in Morganton, and all the Doctors I work with really like the schools in Morganton. Honestly, I think you'd like living in Morganton better than Hickory - but Hickory is where most folks prefer to shop and dine out. It's bigger and more happening, but it's much safer and easier family living in Morganton or Valdese. Just my 2 cents.

Tony Lee Glenn thanks!! I was leaning more toward Morganton. I am an RN, what health system do you work for? Are the wages competitive?

What if you wanted to build your own house on your own land but it wasn't built the conventional way?
@tonyleeglenn

In our area you just have to make sure your construction meets local building codes. So you'd just have to get your plans approved by the building inspector's office.

Moving to Morganton in a couple of months. Lived in Asheville for 20 yrs before living in New York State for the past 13 yrs. Returning to my adopted state. Made my decision before discovering your videos but they validated my thoughts. Looking forward to returning to the mountains and all the outdoor activities. Great videos and well done. Thanks, Tony!!!

They just had a hate protest with fire arms .. its a shame to have to ask if it's for African Americans.. but.. it has to be asked. I came to check the video to see what's goin on. Price of living is very fair. Doesn't seem its for African 3

My wife and I love to go back to Hickory to eat and shop - but Morganton and Valdese both offer a nice lifestyle with reduced crime rate and slower pace. I lived in Conover for 18 years, and I like Burke County better - but Catawba County isn't bad at all. After 7 years in Burke Co. though - I find more and more to like there all the time.

abbazaba1979 That was one of my motivations too. I'm originally from Little Switzerland in the high mountains. I can get there in about 50 minutes now, and to Asheville in about the same amount of time. If you've never been to the South Mountains in Burke County, you really have to go there sometime and see how beautiful it is. We live on Mineral Springs mountain south of Valdese which is very nice and still pretty affordable. Let me know if you have any questions about the area.
