I totally agree with you. So the average 10 year old car will end up being scraped because something fitted to it fails and costs too much to fix, now this complete car is going to have to be recycled which is counter productive and will generate pollution getting rid of it and then another car will be built to replace it causing even more damage to the environment. It is far better to keep a good car going until it is truly beyond its usefulness.

I agree with the DPF removal from the 10th year onwards. I bought an used E81, 14 years old. Soon the DPF light went on, but as a new car owner, I talked to a friend and by his advice tried to fix it by regen, long drive at 2000rpm. My fault. The result was the turbine broke it's axis after a highway drive. Everything's ok now, but the high pressure from a blocked DPF is not something to be neglected, no matter the extent of blockage.

In some countries, a dpf delete will render your vehicle unroadworthy, therefore also not insurable. The legal issues could easily escalate. Replacing a dpf is cheaper.

As others have mentioned you should not keep the revs high... Measure the exhaust gas temp before DPF and you'll see it start steadily climbing once above 50mph, when hot enough should start burning the soot mass.... You should also check to see if coolant temp drops below 60c when driving over 50 over a long period of time. If so it is your thermostats.. i would measure these parameters with ista whilst driving by recording the screen or something... see if the soot mass & ash goes down at all (passive regen)..

I checked the back pressure before the dpf using ista, maybe try that to see if its blocked. It revs up the engine by itself apart from the last check, great to watch.

Similar problem with my 2016 Cx5, tried regen no luck. Actually the warning light came on when I was over 300km from home. I drove back at 120kph in outside temperatures of 35°c. Sweet FA! Eventually took it to Mazda Dealership, took them a few hours for a computer "burn off" 6 months on now, no problems fingers crossed!! If it does return I ll either remove it or do a chemical clean. Thankfully they're not mandatory here!! Cheers for the video George.

Hi George. I can see your problem on the ISTA while you are driving very clearly. Your back pressure reading is way too high. The ecu won’t start a regeneration unless the back pressure according the ISTA SHOULD BE WITHIN THESE RANGES: less than 35 mbar at idle, less than 75 mbar at 2000 RPM and less than 200 mbar at cut off engine RPM which is about 4000 RPM. The ISTA will do that test for you. It will rev the engine automatically during the test and the end will tell you the 3 readings and the maximum permissible values as I mentioned above. It is a safety feature because a regen with a heavily blocked dpf might set a fire. Of course you know your both egr and main engines thermostat should be working fine, the diesel in the tank as you mentioned shouldn’t be low, of course your glow plugs and the control unit should be working, good working egr and no fault code stored in the ecu. Another reason for such high back pressure reading is a a faulty back pressure sensor which is about £30. I had the same problem. I had an on car dpf cleaning twice. It doesn’t work. What I did I took the dpf to a place near Blackpool, I live in northwest, they pump flush cleaned the dpf in about an hour for £150 just then BINGO, the pressure readings came down hugely just like what you get from a brand new dpf. Of course there is a very important thing which most of people don’t know. In the ecu software if the mileage of the car is 150 000 miles then even if the dpf is not blocked and other parameters are normal, still the dpf won’t regenerate until you go through a dpf replacement procedure in the ISTA, even if you physically installed a brand new OME DPF. By the way my car is 520d, M47 engine, 57 registration plate. Hope that will help you. Again please don’t spend any money on ON CAR DPF cleaning, specially you can take out the dpf out of the car your self. Good luck

It will regenerate, you just need to keep clearing the errors. While on the motorway it slowly regens passively and it increases exhaust temperature regardless of the backpressure. Mine used to get to about 400-450C for about 10 minutes before chucking an error and failing. You need to clear the error while driving and carry on until eventually it will passively unblock itself enough to blast the temps to 600-650C. Once it hits that it usually clears the soot all the way through.

I have never had an issue with the DPF on any car which I have had, and I don't do huge miles. Removing it makes your car illegal and uninsurable, so if it is working fine then leave it in place. Most failures seem to stem from other issues anyway which cause it not to regen properly. Failed thermostats being a common one.

I've had my 2006 E91 330d for 6 years and never had any major problems or error messages. Only issue I've had is the old quacking EGR valve issue. Replaced with another used part from ebay for £20 and another 2 years in without issue. When taking out the old EGR it wasn't overly mucky either. Don't know if this is testament to the 6 pot diesel, good servicing or just luck. Do mainly town driving, but do have a 1 or 2 30min drives at 60mph every month. Either way looks like I'm one of the lucky ones 😅

Took my 3.5 year old Vauxhall Astra 2.0 Cd SRi into lookers (main dealer) in Oct 2015 with low oil pressure warning after the engine would crank as too much oil in system. Turned out the extra diesel that is pumped in to burn the exhaust gases is designed to be dumped into oil sump! - that was the last I saw of the car, Lookers tried regen and couldn’t after trying several things they told me the next thing to “try” was new injectors @ £2000 but could not guarantee that would work - told them I wanted Vauxhall involved but vauxhall point blank refused to do so - would never buy another Vauxhall on that basis again

When the car reaches approx 250k km approx 150k miles the dpf fault code will come up even if the dpf is still good because from factory the max usage of the dpf is 250k km. What you need to do is reset the dpf by telling the system that you have changed the dpf without really changing it. There are a couple of videos on KZbin about this issue and on how to program this.

The problems with Dpfs regenerations can be caused by multiple situations, one of the most important is the turbo system not working properly. I had problems with my diesel car, during several years, just because there was a very small hole in the solenoid vacuum hose of the turbo, that no mechanic noticed and that no error code diagnostic! I discovered the problem by myself.

My BMW E91 320d LCI has 186k miles on it and it has the original DPF. The exhaust backpressure sensor should be changed every 60-70k miles (it`s a piezzo part and exhaust temperature along with soot will make it give wrong info to ecu). Also you should check your entire engine (worn injectors/turbo/piston rings will cause building up more soot in your dpf). Removing your dpf should be the last option and I would not recomend removing it unless your engine is pretty much worn out

The problem with DPF's on BMW's is that they fill up with ash created by the soot being burned during re-gens. Eventually no amount of re-gens will work because the DPF is actually blocked with ash, not soot. I had a 530d and went through this process countless times. Nothing I did made any difference. Tried countless re-gens, passive and active. It drove me insane in the end.

It is a catch 22 as you can't remove a DPF as it is an instant MOT failure. If you have someone in the know, great but it still seriously impacts resale if you remove the system. It is worth noting that in most modern diesels the DPF won't regenerate if other error codes are present so make sure you have deleted all codes via a scanning tool before trying a regen. I have had a fair few issues with the DPF on my Jag XF. There are DPF cleaning services now at most garages, even Halfords do it, so it doesn't have to be too expensive. Also worth noting for the more environmentally and health minded people out there that if you delete the DPF there will be much more of the black stuff with pm10s being emitted.

Removal of the DPF is illegal as it comes under emissions control systems. Without a DPF and without EGR valves a large volume of NoX gases are emitted which are the gases that contribute to lung diseases and respiratory illnesses. DPFs are a serviceable item and convert soot that is collected by the particulate filter by into ash by high temperature burning. The ash is retained in the filter and eventually reaches a "full" level which no regeneration will reduce. Then it is time to clean or replace the filter. I have done this on my TDI Passat at 150k as it was used for a daily 35 mile commute so passive regeneration occurred due to constant high DPF temperature. Have never had a DPF light or fault code and replaced when regenerations became very frequent. Shorter journeys would have invoked active regenerations which the ECU controls by increasing fuelling and the ash content accumulates more quickly. There is no issue with having DPFs if you understand what they are, how they work and that they will need to be cleaned or replaced every 100 to 150k on average. My Passat is at 230k now - still no DPF issues.

@@spudhead1161 You will find that in the UK removal of any emissions controlling parts on a motor vehicle is not illegal, but by law, DRIVING a vehicle whereby factory fitted emissions parts have been removed IS illegal. So basically you can remove a DPF and thereafter, if it does not fail the next MOT test, and you can get the car to the test station without driving it, you can look at your DPF removed car for ever more but just can't DRIVE it LEGALLY! 😂😂 Same thing then really isn't it? Shame it is so badly policed as I'm sure it would prevent small children from getting lung disorders from nearby diesel traffic fumes, particularly NoX gases. How do I know this apart from having researched this to death? Brother's partner is a lawyer, sister is a police officer, brother is a police officer, father is a mechanic. I haven’t read all 500 comments so it might have already been answered, but a normal mileage between regenerations is 650 km. Your DPF doesn’t regenerate because of some faulty sensor, and now it’s clogged up. Fix the faults and your DPF will start behaving normal again.

This issue depends on the make of diesel engine. I have a nine year old KIA 1.6 diesel that has spent its life doing very short runs interleaved with motorway runs every few months, the DPF copes with this. Was told to learn when your engine is performing a DPF regen and to avoid switching off until completed. VW group cars have the increased revs and fans switched on which is fairly obvious, but some other makes are not so obvious. One other way is to keep the trip readout on instant MPG and you can get to know when a regen is on due to the instant MPG dropping- especially on idle. Try not to switch off during a regen and this should save you many of the DPF problems. Obviously keep having to do this becomes a complete pain in the ass, and I got rid of the sodding thing. Back to petrol.

Hi George I suspect it wont re-gen because the dpf is blocked at the back with ash. Dpf's do have a limited lifespan & will only re-gen so many times before they need replacing because when it re-gens whilst it burns the soot out this process produces ash which can't be removed/burnt out of the dpf, & the ash builds up at the back of the dpf causing the differential pressures from the front to the back of the dpf become too large (implausible) giving you the trouble codes I think you've got. I had a problem with a ford galaxy that wouldn't re-gen. It had similar trouble codes & would go through the motions but would not re-gen. It turned out that the differential pressures form the front of the dpf to the rear of the dpf were too great which think is what your diagnostics are suggesting. There are companies that clean dpf's & they always clean them back to front to force the ash out of the front of the dpf. In my case the dpf was too far gone & had to be replaced because the diesel catalytic converter had broken up & also blocked the dpf. once I replaced the catalytic converter & dpf the car did a re-gen straight away without me having to request one because it was happy with the differential pressures. I also found out that some dpf's re-gen much more frequently than most people think as watching it on live data after I had done the repair it regenerated several times on a 60 minute journey & that was with all new parts. I hope this help you.

@@simonkeable391 BMW does not have a pressure sensor after DPF. There are two sensors. One mounted before the turbocharger in the exhaust manifold and one before the DPF/OxyCat. Interesting and very frustrating issue. 4 years ago I was looking for a new car and looked at several makes and types and settled on a diesel engine for the good fuel consumption. I went to the various dealers and Ford were amongst them. When at the Ford dealers the salesman took one look at me (silver hair aged over 70) and said that Ford diesel cars would not be suitable for me as the diesel particulate filter would give problems as I wouldn't drive the car hard enough! I have never been so insulted ever and resolved never to own a Ford. I opted in the end for a new top of the line limited edition Skoda Octavia 2.0 & Klement. I have owned it for 4 years now and it has performed very well with excellent fuel consumption and has superb performance. I only do small mileage now but I have never had particulate filter problem. If the filter has regenerated I have not been able to detect it. I do not often drive in heavy traffic. With modern high performance cars that run at low rpm it is not easy to give them a good thrashing without getting speeding tickets. I wonder if your problem is sensor related?
