Should you remove FLARE on the horse’s hoof or leave it alone? Do you know the 3 different types of flare?
In this #ItsNotRocketScience 🚀 lesson I’m going to explain what flare actually is and whether or not you should be removing it.
I’ll be covering:
- 3 different types of flare: unnatural; natural; and laminitic
- why is the flare there in the first place
- how you should trim each flare
So many people are worried about flare. Especially when you take a horse’s shoes off, the foot often begins to flare in all kinds of ways scaring the owner because the foot doesn’t look all 'neat' and 'symmetrical' anymore as it previously had done in shoes.
But the truth is, once you understand flare, you can become more confident at embracing the flare or not, and certainly be far less anxious about it.

Fantastic, love this so much. My boy’s hooves have started to flare and now I know what to look at to guide our next actions. I have him barefoot and use scoot boots which are great but the his feet twist. Please keep sharing about this topic and particularly maybe show examples of actual cases. So grateful. Lovely simple explanation.

What if there is a flare caused by the infected white line? On the sides not at the front? Thank you!❤

Separation is not a natural flare, and white lines tend to only get infected when there is separation, so work on the diet and management, and keep the trim to the HSP regularly.

@@lindsaysetchell Thank you for your answer! I will join the group! The problem is that the hoof care taker thinks it is the right way. I am about to learn the trimming myself, but I am confused because so many people being so controverse about things. Her toe was really very long. After the first trimming shortening her toe she walked better. After the second trimming when the care taker went over the white line (in a 90 degree ankle) which had widen very much she seems to have more pain again, especially on hard ground..

It would be really useful if you showed a real hoof as well as the drawing as it would be easier to understand the various parts of the hoof and the different types of flare. Many people like me are not sure what is the white line, the inner hoof wall, the outer hoof wall, the sole plane etc. When I look at my horse's sole these areas are not clear to me.
