Hi Lad . Liked and subscribed.. Just realised , not done the Snake pass since 1985.. Happier days when visiting Holmfirth to see Nora Batty about some wrinkly stockings she sold me on e-bay :))). Checking the weather and next weekend looks like there will be hole in the rain clouds.. Thanks for the beautiful vlog and some nice off bike footage as you journey on to yonder hills .🤓💯❤‍🩹🙏🤳🤳

I walked it in around 1975. We were three school lads from London. There was a blizzard, and the snow was 2 feet deep in places. When we reached the Pennine Way, there was a BBC van filming the blizzard. They gave us a cup of tea! Then we trailed down to Glossop for fish and chips before heading up to Crowden and a freezing cold Youth Hostel! Those were the days.....

Going to the Snake pass via Buxton is a very long way round. You need to go to Glossop and start from there, or go to Sheffield to get to the eastern end.. I should know having lived at the Manchester end since childhood and driven over the Snake countless times to go walking or rock climbing in the Peak District since the 1960´s. Never mind your satnav, get a map out and get yourself orientated and acquainted with the lie of the land. Erwood reservoir and the Cat and Fiddle are miles from the Snake with a good chunk of high moorland in between. Now for some truth about the origin of the name. "The name of the road matches its winding route, but actually derives from the emblem of the Snake Inn, one of the few buildings on the high stretch of road. In turn, the pub's name and sign were derived from the serpent on the Cavendish arms of William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire." So there you have it. As for danger, a friend owned a Ford Cortina Savage which had a 3 Litre V6 engine and very fast for it´s time. My friend hit 100 mph on the straight bit over the summit before anchors on for the sharpish bend over the Doctors Gate culvert, well sharp at that approach speed. In those days the Snake often got blocked by winter snow, as did most of the passes over the moors.

Good bit of history. I started the Snake Pass at the Glossop end and went west to east and ended up at Sheffield. Living south of Derbyshire it was 89 miles to Glossop, I came through many place including Buxton.👍

Hi, I lived at the start of the Snake Pass in Glossop for over 15 years. A great road to ride on. But just be aware of the blind left hand bends. Especially just past the Snake Pass Inn when going towards Sheffield. Same coming the other way but righthanders instead. That is if it is still open. Moved away nearly 20 years ago. Still it was bags of fun on a sunny day as long as you take care and do not try to do it going hell for leather. You might find hell sooner than you would like if you do. It is a pity that you did it in the rain as the road is definitely not at its best in the rain. It is also a pity that you did not mention that from Derwent Reservoir you can turn right and go to Castleton(Where the Blue John mines are), Edale and Hathersage where it was reputed that Little John came from. All really nice places to visit on a sunny day.

I've been riding the Snake for over 40 years and never had any real issues TBH. It was a much better run back then before the double white lines appeared everywhere and was an absolute blast on a decent sports bike. I've seen way more trashed cars up there over the years than bikes. In recent years it's been plagued with landslips resulting in closures and roadworks. The drop down into Glossop is still one of my favourite rides these days.👍 Occasionally the plod have a radar patrol down on the long stretch alongside Ladybower.

Of course you should. I prefer a warm dry day very early in the morning then call by the Glossop Café for a breakfast. All twisty roads that attract bikes can be dangerous and I've seen some absolute idiots riding up in the Peaks that inevitably contribute to the statistics. The road in it's self isn't dangerous.

I've ridden it on my bike. I also drive my lorry along it as i deliver to a factory in Buxton. I have noticed while driving the lorry i do get the odd motorbike doing a stupid overtake. I've never had any problems with the road itself. The problem is the one or two people doing daft things. Marks top tip, when i took my bike there i got lucky and arrived in Buxton while there was a classic car fair and auction going on. So i had a nice cuppa tea and spent more time then i should have looking at classics and trying not to buy anything i might later regret.

i've done snake pass from glossop towards sheffield quite a few times, and usually then cut back northerly towards penistone just after ladybower, and as with all roads snake pass is only as dangerous as you make it. It's ok for a main road i suppose, but yeah, do it at least once to find out what the fuss aint about, but when in the peaks you can find many more roads you'll enjoy more im sure. GL

Snake pass was named after the Devonshire family who own Chatsworth house. They paid for it, so they could move goods and minerals from the estate to Manchester. The snake is in their coat of arms. Its in a shocking state after landslides. At least its banned to lorries due to weight.

Looks like a typical Snake Pass day to me weather wise, but the weather can change so fast, especially if you're driving through a cloud. The main problem with this road is they did not follow the Romans. The Romans did not cross the soft earth and rocks that after the ice age where glacial terminal moraines. At each moraine the road has collapsed. Either now or in the recent past. The road can be a challenge but it is not dangerous, only its users can be dangerous. A challenge is to travel the full length, either way, and only use the brakes 3 times. In the old days the challenge was to do the Ladybower bridge traffic lights to Glossop golf course 30 sign or return, 20 miles in 20 mins. But it is all 50mph now, so miss the cyclists and try enjoy the ride.

The best thing I did was buy a slow but fun car. I've had performance cars and bikes in my 40 years of driving and riding and if I'm honest they just stressed me out. They're just too fast for UK roads. You open them up and within seconds you're braking for a bend. You just can't use the performance. It's like trying to play snooker in a 4ft by 4ft shed. For work purposes I bought a Peugeot 107 last year. I've never had a city car before and I was expecting frugal yet miserable motoring. I couldn't have been more wrong. It's an absolute hoot to drive. It feels like a dodgem, the engine and exhaust have a rooty tooty snort to them and it just feels like you're going much faster than you are. The handling is only average and this adds to the fun. You don't have to drive the thing on its door handles because it just feels fun driving at 50 or 60. You don't really want to do much more because there's no need. Despite being rather slow it's a full-on driver's car. Other cars leave me for dead on big open roads but that's great because I just have fun at my pace in my space and the cops just aren't interested in me. They're targeting the maniacs on R1s and young guys in ST Fords etc. Speed and fun are two completely different things. Sometimes they go together but sometimes they don't. I know something like a 107 won't suit everyone but I absolutely love it. Daft as it sounds I have more fun in this than I ever did on a performance bike. Maybe I just wasn't a true biker. Each to their own.

I don't ride a motorbike, but I enjoyed driving over the Snake Pass to Manchester, it's a much better drive than motorways, for me. sadly I cannot afford a car now and I miss the scenery already.

Driving Snake Pass from Manchester to Sheffield is certainly an alternative to motorways. The winding road, with its turns and scenic views is an experience everyone should try. Missing the scenery? Keep those memories alive! 👍

I've been riding Snake Pass, Buxton, Matlock and Woodhead Pass regularly and yes it's the other idiots in gangs on bikes and driving cars, especially on a sunny Sunday, who give it this reputation. I came across one such car gang who stopped in the middle of the road to have a conversation a few weeks ago then decided to stop at the top of snake pass and get out whilst walking about in the middle of the road where its a blind crest, complete morons the lot of them. They eventually pulled into the Esso petrol station in Glossop were they again caused mayhem just parking in the middle of the forecourt. Saying that most of the bikers I see nod and I would hope they would stop and help if I was having an issue but for me it's not a dangerous road. I rode it in all weathers and love it.

There is nothing dangerous about snake Pass, I've ridden it may be three times in the past two years, and ridden sensibly and within your ability it's absolutely fine, in fact it's a lovely road with some great scenery, the problem is people riding on it like a bloody race track which it isn't, fools on two wheels will always be a problem 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi, nice scenery, but as for the road itself it didn't seem a particularly arduous ride, the biggest problem seems to be dodging the potholes. The road from Little River to Akaroa or the Takaka Hill road are far more challenging if you ever want a challenge. There is a 800m elevation change from Riwaka to the top of the pass. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWianGSJmJeHZq8si=RAH4Z83_6z3shA6R

As I got near to Sheffield I pulled off the main road and onto the access road for the Rivelin Dam. The is single track across he Dam and there is a nice spot at the other end to stop for a rest, No parking, hopped off the bike half way down engine still running and took a cheeky picture. The 20 minutes I was sat at the other end there was zero traffic on the Dam. Well spotted though 😊

Yes I agree. I guess its reputation is not down to technical ability required to ride the road but more based on accident statistics. Since the banning of HGV's on the road I would say this has removed some awkward overtaking manoeuvres and the road will drop off the list.

LOL, „the most dangerous…“ Drama BS. If so, then it‘s for stupid riding/driving. We went last year through it and it was a nice road, just a nice road, without the signs telling us it‘s the snake pass we wouldn‘t had considered it anything more than just another nice motorcycle road, with some sheeps that look you in the eye when you lean down to them on curves. Yes, we did it in light wet conditions, just before we were hit by a big rain-splash for 20minutes when we arrived at the end of it and have taken 10minutes to get our raingear on. another youtube drama intro for just another nice road, like the many I have where I live. Similar to the drama-queens crying out loud on the Hardknot pass or the likes, we passed twice with loaded heavy bikes, rolling quick in late evening darkening hours and in the morning again. And no, I‘m not a hard rider or any pro. That‘s my point I wonder if all youtubers in UK are total beginners, as I saw some going even faster, than just quick. But they had no cams on, just like me, I‘m not a tamagochi.

You make the point of the vid very well. Why is this road on the most dangerous list? At the start whilst sat just before Snake pass I say I don't think I agree with that statement and at the end I also say its not a dangerous road. All motorcyclists should Just go ride it and enjoy the day out rather than listening to all the negatives about this road or any other road that we read about. If you ride within both the speed limits and your skill set then none of these roads are particularly dangerous.

Dear 2ST .... you need to get out more - this is not a dangerous road at all. My wife and I ( yes 2 up ) have riden from Lhasa to the Everest Base camp in Tibet . That is a dangerous and difficult ride topping out at 5,248m ( 17,000ft ) . Snake pass is just for babies and beginners. We have also ridden from Chiang Mai in Thailand to Beijing, twice around Southern Africa and in Myanmar plus many others. Even Morocco which is closer to home is far more dangerous than Snake Pass. Go across the Atlas mountains and make another video....
