The Atari Jaguar is a cartridge based console from the early to mid nineties that failed in the videogame market. It contended with consoles like the SNES, and Genesis first but eventually went toe to toe with the 3DO and even the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn, but it didn't fair well against most of them. All in all, it is speculated that less than 150,000 Atari Jaguars were sold, and it marked the end of Atari in the console market for a very, very long time.
It can be had from places like eBay today for quite a bit of money, but is it worth picking up? And why does it cost so much to begin with? Are the games hidden gems? Let's watch and found out!
If you are interested in advertising or partnering, or even just talk you can email me at 7800progamer@gmail.com

The Atari Network has 3 goals (besides entertainment) that I hope embodies everything the channel does:
1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us

I owned a Jaguar which I bought pretty much at launch and still have fond memories of it. I wound up selling mine and have always regretted that decision. But given how much the second hand systems sell for I'll probably content myself with Atari 50 and hope for a Jaguar Mini or something similar.

I bought a Jag in 93 but traded in when it sold poorly. Fast forward to 2022 I bought another. Then I went to Atari age and bought a game drive. Then I called it a day. I have all the games on one cart w/o paying obscene prices for individual carts. I did pay a lot for the Jag but I am happy with the way I did it. I have never owned a Jag CD and probably never will since they are going for $1500 to 2Gs and break easily.

Got into the Jaguar in 1999 and got a unit at KB Toys for me and my friend at $30 a piece. One of the last three units in all of KB's inventory. Went back for the last unit but it was gone! :D. So many hours of fun there.

I bought one about two years ago. I always wanted one back in the day and never got it. I’m 10 games shy of a full set. I have some of the rare and expensive ones but still missing some big boys. I doubt I will ever finish it but I have had fun playing and collecting the jag. I have streamed it on twitch and people come in and are curious. The vast majority of people don’t even know what a jaguar is. It’s cool to experience it for the first time all these years later

I was a lucky lad, living in N.Cal area and had early access to see Tempest 2K when it was a 12" PCB raw, sticking out of a basic early Jaguar unit. It was at a GOOD GUYS in the North Bay area just oustside SF. I bought one 3 months later anf lost it in 95 when I joined the Navy. Since then I have owned 3 Jags, 1 CD unit and now I emulate everyting because it works. God Bless

I bought a Jaguar and 2x Jaguar CD add-ons all still sealed like 12 years ago for not much money. I sold one JCD a short while later which made a profit and basically meant I got the rest for free. I then sold the 2nd JCD a few years later to Jacques Villeneuve (yes, the F1 driver!) for a very tidy sum because there just wasn't anything on it that I enjoyed playing and the value had increased to a level that made no sense to keep it. I still have the Jaguar. I managed to grab the flash cart when that first came out and sold all my official cartridges, leaving me with another tidy profit and more games than I started out with given the ease with which they can be downloaded. I spent some of that profit on an official 6-button Pro controller. Recently though a great Jaguar emulator was released and is available via EmuDeck. Playing Jaguar games on my Steam Deck is a whole lot easier than getting the actual console out of storage and hooking it up.

I drove to a little shop in NYC that had one of these left and were holding it for me. This was during Atari's "light" launch which I believe was only NYC and California. So, I was one of the first people to get it. My friend drove home back to NJ which was the state I was living at the time. He had to drive because I was just too damn excited! Yeah, I loved it then...still love it now.

Still fondly remember the retailer Game in the UK buying a ton of old stock and selling it off cheap. I bought a stack of games for £100 and then picked up the cd unit for £50. It's not a great console but Tempest and Jeff Minters VLM make it worth hanging on to.

Great summary, in my case i was fascinated by Jag around early 1995 when i used to read game magazines mentioning "overhyped PS1" while actually "64-bits real deal Jaguar" was underrated. Not until 1996 i could compare them directly at the game convention in my home town so obviously seeing games made me change my mind once and for all and I've never wanted Jaguar again. Apparently it was similar with my love towards Sega Saturn seen as underrated until i started collecting for it seriously and even though it has some great games the mighty PS1 in the 5th generation just blows everything away in comparison.

But then learned that not only did the SNES already had a DSP for audio and could do a better Kart game, but those 16 bit consoles had transparency, which the Jaguar does not. Light and shadow effects typical for the Jaguar were already on SNES. NES had the more advanced controller with a hardware UART. Like, did Atari even watch the competition? And then all the stuff even the Amiga does better. Even zx spectrum has proper fast page burst access for video. No wait states or hogging the bus.

Sorry for your sticker shock regret. I was seriously considering getting it in 2000 for $99 from liquidator, but passed on it because I thought I was just trying to collect ANOTHER piece of technology and I wasn’t into the games. I picked up a sealed Jaguar a few years ago for a lot more, but now I have most of the ST ports and homebrews that I want in physical form. I don’t regret paying more for the Jaguar in 2021 at all and I figure that some homebrew developer of the future will create a game I want to play for the Jaguar (Hammer of the Gods and Wyvern Tales) and not the PS5. The lack of homebrew in collections and mini consoles is what make owning the physical console really shine. I feel better about owning the console now that I would have in 2000. I think it has a brighter future in 2024, than when it was cheap and is worth every penny you need to save for and spend on it.

I was talked out of picking this console up back when it was still on the shelves too. As far as playing the games go I'd probably be more interested in atari collections being released on steam more than playing them on anything else - as long as they played well. If atari released a retro console that played jaguar games I might consider picking one up if only because of the neat looking design.

I have two Jaguars, both with CD drives and... they just sit in a box in my basement. I forget they're there most of the time. I've played plenty of Tempest 2000, but there's not much else that makes me want to get the Jag out and play-not even my copy of BattleSphere. I grew up with an 800XL, and was excited to get a Jag when it was new. I paid $249. I can't say if it was worth it. BigPEmu is a fantastic idea instead of finding overpriced hardware. I have two copies of Doom, but can't find the adapter to connect my two Jags. I ordered two copies of BattleSphere when it was new so a friend and I could both play. We connected our systems together (over 20 years ago) to play BattleSphere exactly once. That same friend and I connected our OG Xboxes about 500 times to pay Halo.

Back in the day, I did not know of the existence of the 7800 and Jaguar. However, once I got into collecting and retro gaming, being an Atari fanboy, I wanted all the Atari platforms. I got the Jag a few years ago to participate in the high score challenge at Atari I/O forums. I planned from the start to get the GameDrive. Physical copies of games would be simply shelf candy as you said. The Jaguar has made a significant impact on my collecting. Cybermorph was first game I played on the Jaguar. When I first aaw the game screen, I thought I was looking at an Atari ST game. No surprise then that I later learned that the Jag and ST were in the market around the same time. It resparked my love for the ST that I tried to suppress (because of its linked to Trammell). The Jag along with your video about Jack Trammell has opened me up to embrace the ST again. I’m now looking for an ST to add back to the fold. Thanks for another great video ❤

Well put. I love the Jag as well, although I was late to the party (bought mine at the end of 2020). But still early enough to get some very good deals on the most valuable games so that I could amass all games released between 93-96 plus Telegames releases after that and homebrew stuff. Not exactly sure why I love the Jag - maybe because I'm a sucker for underdog consoles and maybe because it was Atari's goodbye to the gaming world (well, the Sunnyvale Atari that is). Anyway, would not part with my collection for any price and really hope to see a Jaguar mini released some day. I'll buy a couple of them then! 😊 Cheers!

I won’t mind an Atari emulation video at some point. I tried emulation when I was participating in the Atari Age high score contest. The game I was trying to play was Chuck Norris Super Kicks. Something went wrong and my Atari Chuck Norris was doomed to many beatings. It wasn’t my joystick adapter because I got my copy of Circus Convoy to play. I read something about updates, but then moved and just now finally got the PC out of the box. It’s a newer computer. I am definitely not tech savvy so that limits my trouble shooting. Anyone sorry to ramble on. I do have a lot of 2600 and 7800 carts to play.

Though I didn't get the Jaguar upon release, '93 limited (lived nowhere near) or for the nation wide release later in '94. My chance arrived in January of '95. I payed full price, including one controller and the game Cybermorph. But during that time Atari had a special promotion that gave you a choice of a Jaguar game or second controller if you sent in the UPC off the Jaguar box. The choice of games was Wolfenstein 3D or Raiden. I chose Raiden as right after I mailed ordered my Jaguar I stumbled upon one lonely Jaguar controller and copy of Wolfenstein at a local game shop. Both used for half the price, so I bought them. Other than those, the first games I purchased, instead of the Jaguar CD I wanted to get right away, but was told it was not yet released even though they advertised it for sale already, I ordered Iron Soldier, AvP, Checkered Flag and Doom. A week after getting the Jaguar, I purchase Tempest 2000 and Hoverstrike from a mom & pop game shop I found in a town near my college. So for all of the above I payed about $650. I felt it was a great deal, and due to the timing of my purchase there were a handful of great games already released. Out of my initial 8 games I was only disappointed in Checkered flag due to poor controls. I never had the experiences I heard about with the long waits in between game releases or the unfortunate choices some Jaguar buyers/owners made with game purchases. Every game I bought I was blown away by, except one and I figured that was par for the course; 7 out of 8 games good to killer app quality, and one that was disappointing. I continued as a proud Jaguar owner, buying the Jaguar CD at final release price of $149 in fall of '95, including Blue Lightning, Vidgrid, T2K soundtrack and Myst demo. And ignored the Saturn and PSX releases as I had the with the outrageously priced 3DO and 32X(as I would have to buy the Genesis, CD unit and 32X to match the Jaguar & CD).I was content with my choice and most games, but when the Jaguar went Belly-up in early '96, I bought up a bunch of both good and bad games from the bargain bin for $5 each, as well as as pro-controller for $25. Then a few months later I found out about 3DO following the Jaguar and picked up a 3DO with two controllers and pack-in for $99 and a few more games at $5 bargain bin prices too. I hunkered down through the rest of that generation happy with my Jaguar & CD and 3DO system with combined libraries and continued game purchases at bargain bin pricing for both and didn't upgrade again until the release of the Sega Dreamcast. I've kept my collections mostly intact since, now worth thousands of dollars, which has caused me to at least think about selling them when I otherwise would never do. But definitely the Jaguar is overpriced unless you are a hardcore collector who is wealthy enough to not care about the cost. I'm glad I have mine already because I adore my Jaguar and even many new games that still come out in the indy and homebrew scene, but couldn't afford to start collecting for it now, I would if I could and didn't own it, but only due to my history with it. BUT, with the release of the Jaguar Game Drive you can now have nearly all games downloaded onto the SD card, old and new free ones. A pro-controller remake for $75 too. So for the cost of a working Jaguar base unit, $150 for the Game Drive and $75 for the pro-controller can get you all you need if you are more about retro gaming and not collecting. Still probably about $750, but that would include nearly every game less ones released in the past few years.

I'll be the first to say that I'm really glad that these consoles are getting more expensive these days because this is exactly what needed to happen, to prevent a shortage. I was somewhat disappointed when they used to sell under a hundred dollars because they didn't make or sell too many of these consoles back in the day and they will never make any more of them. So with them being overpriced, it could prevent anyone from just buying them. This prevents a shortage of these consoles. I know it sucks for those who just want to experience the console but it is what it is.

The barrier for entry is pretty intense these days. I wouldn't recommend it unless you go whole hog. Jaguar, Flash cart, Pro controller, and reproduction controller overlays. Just a reproduction Pro controller and overlays is $200+. The Pro controller improves the experience quite a bit. If it was the default I don't think that weird rumor of the controller being uncomfortable/bad would be so prevalent.

I was always curious about the Jaguar, but never got one I had my 2600 Jr and my Lynx. So I didn't get the Jaguar. I heard about it, but most of the games didn't appeal to me. But still I wondered about it. Now, it wouldn't be worth the time and money I'd have to invest in it. But if they were to make a mini, well I could go for that.

I wanted a Jaguar for over a decade and I missed out on two chances. By the time I had disposable income to get into game collecting I ended up getting a Saturn instead and since then already have sunk about a thousand into it. I deeply regret not getting a Jaguar when I could but it’s simply too late for me.

I was almost going to buy one three years ago, but I'm thankful I didn't. The console has a lot of charm, but I don't have enough room in my house for a system that only has 10 or so good games (I recently did this for the Philips Videopac, that also has a very small library, but that console is WAY cheaper). Besides, the Jaguar seems to excel in a particular genre that I don't care for (FPS). However, I'd definitely buy a Jag mini

If Atari released a mini there'd be no doom, rayman or AvP (and I don't think they have the license for Iron soldier either). Aside from T2K there aren't many other games worth playing on it (I have a Jag and I love it but it really doesn't have many exclusive games really worth buying). It's just not worth paying for one now, especially since Atari50 and from that the apparently excellent BigPEemu . Get a 3D0 instead, or if the ST conversions interest you get an ST - they're great computers (well ok, they're not, but partly thanks to the 'other' 16 influence at the time it's a machine that's been pushed beyond limits I doubt anyone involved in it's creation thought possible)

Atari 400 mini will allow you to load more games with a USB stick. Do the same thing for the Jaguar Mini. Problem solved. It's also about the aesthetic and just wanting one to have. I was never really happy emulating and there are others like me. I never saw anything wrong with it but it's definitely not the same experience.

I can understand the high prices for Jaguar stuff. What I want to know is why games for the original Xbox cost so damn much. Why are some games $30+ for just a bare disc and $50-120 for a complete copy? Was the Xbox a system where they only made a limited number of games, and each game was only produced in a limited quantity? Or were the games mass produced by the thousands, or even million? If the latter, why do they now cost so much?

Bought a Jaguar right when it was released, even had the CD drive. In hindsight the only thing worthwhile playing was T2K. Jaguar emulation never was right until recently so the only way to play was with original hardware. Sure, there were "some" good games but many were ports of games on other systems. I have Atari 50 so I now have T2K again and it performs better than it did originally on the Jaguar. Anyone can now use BigPEmu and play Jaguar stuff for free.

Is it worth it? Depends. Depends on what one expects...if you do your research and maybe emulate some games and you still want one, sure its worth it. If you think its going to be like the Turbo Grafx and have lots of good games that simply were out elbowed by other good games, harsh realities ahead. I got a majority of mine back in the day, so it was worth it. I even stood in line at EB for the Jaguar CD...I knew it was going to collectable back then... Today the prices are through the roof...unless you are a millionare, or a big enough Atari fan...do some work and see if its worth it for you.

Loved my Jaguar at the time, day 1 UK purchase, but.. AVP has dated horribly, Alien Resurrection on the PlayStation eclipsed it at the time, then PC AVP.. Loved Iron Solider, far better than 32X Metal Head T2K is far more playable than T4K but you don't need a Jaguar to play it today. The systems library is far too limited to justify the absurd prices it goes for today, so, NO it's not worth the investment.

The design that means when you load your save game in AVP and it respawns everything you've killed (and gives you limited ammo) is an abysmal idea.

@@binaryroosterEven worse, for a title where the 2 development teams worked so closely in other areas, with the source material, the Ruddy acid blood puddles not disappearing. Jaguar and Atari didn't have the third party sport as Nintendo and sony had otherwise Jaguar would have done decent job. Also ps2 was not easy to program and even ps3, but both were most sucessful consoles due to third party support and Sony wise decisions.
@TheAtariNetwork
@TheAtariNetwork Ай бұрын
The Jaguar had a spectacular list of third party supporters to start. A lot of people were interested and signed on, but Atari was unable to deliver any documentation or tools to help programmers. When developers called for support they were either ignored or sometimes left hanging for weeks at a time before hearing a response. So a ton of companies dropped support quickly. We did an interview with Ted Tahquechi who was an employee for Atari Corp during the time of the Jaguar and he had some great insights into what made the console a failure. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHTWaHZoi9itZ5Isi=QhXMrSEJ6ed8zq7S The more I talk with these former employees and people involved with the company, the more apparent it becomes that we are so lucky to still have Atari in any form today. Thanks for the comment and thoughts!
