I had a rescue Sheltie cross, I was always told she was too big for a Sheltie and too small for a Collie, after her death and lots of dog articles I determined she was a spay damaged Sheltie. One article I read was on why a Lab breeder wouldn't do hip guarantees on dogs that were altered before 2 years. What she was saying was exactly what I'd noticed in my dog, her legs were too long, her head was narrow, she probably had bad hips and she also had spay incontinence. If a bitch doesn't have bladder control before she's altered she'll never have it and will spend the rest of her life dribbling pee, that includes on your furniture and anywhere else the dog is allowed to settle.

I have so many tell me he will be more calm etc. These people know nothing about the breed. He is wonderful and a loving dog that does not warm to strangers instantly. He is not a biter or killer on leash. Someone breaks in that might be another story. Your video is wonderful. I am sharing this with friends and family.

I think it's increasingly popular to leave a dog as it is in England which I'm very glad of. People seem to just spay/castrate because it's the thing to do, not for an actual reason it's just the done thing, people seriously need to research more! I did years of research before getting my puppy and therefore I will not castrate him! People seem to think that if you don't neuter your dog, you want to breed from it!

Once I said that dry dog kibble is not real dog's food, but a business model. It sustains itself though marketing exaggerations and more money spent in pet shops that stock them. I sometimes think similar about many vets; they offer most irrational advices that make animals at least incur potential problems early on, so that people spend more money on vet bills.
@protectiondogsalesPDS
@protectiondogsalesPDS 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly I think there is an element of that going on. The evidence is clear, but they still keep preaching early alters for health benefits. If does make one wonder why? But, human doctors are not much better. If you are a hundred pounds overweight they will give you pills to treat your illness. They will not tell you that your diet is CAUSING your illnesses. People have to be proactive when it comes to their animals and their own care. Ask questions.

I realize this is a video from 2017, however, I have a question. I have a brother and sister. I certainly don’t want puppies. We had a brother and sister in the early 90’s, and the veterinarian recommended early spay/neuter. I don’t want to do this again. How do I keep them apart when they live together, play together and sleep together and the female is in heat? I have seen what a Shepherd can do to get to a female. We’ve had Shepherds for 32 years, but only 2 females. I’ve also heard of having tubes tied and a vasectomy however, my veterinarian has never heard of this. They continue to get their needed hormones/testosterone. ✌️🥰

I have one dog for 11 years now, he is intact and we didn't have any problem because we have quite a large enclosure for him only. But last year we adopted a male and a female dog (siblings) , so i'm thinking of spaying/neutering them, they are both one year old now, so i still need to wait for a year. And yes dogs in heat are inconvenience, good thing we could separate our dogs one in my parents house and one in my house. My 11 year old intact dog seems like doesn't care with my female dog in heat so they are together.

@@zvonimirtosic6171 that sure is a dumb thing you said. It is a inconvenience just the bleeding around the part not to mention the other inconveniences. It's inconvenient when the power goes out but it's more of a inconvenience using a generator all the time and a real bad inconvenience living without power at all. And that is the classic case of why I'd be afraid to not spay before the 1st heat. Pyometras are nasty and quick to kill. I get it's not super common but the pros outweighed the cons for me. My dog is a small breed though. They mature faster, so it was less of a big deal than a Great Dane that needs a couple years to mature.

Good information, but I hope this doesn't discourage people from taking in altered rescues. My rescue was neutered younger than I was happy with, but he's exceeded all my expectations. I understood the shelter's perspective too: the risk of early spay/neuter is less important than reducing the overall population of unwanted dogs. How could they know that I wasn't going to let my dog breed? If they had to screen adopters that closely they wouldn't be able to save half the dogs they do.

Behavior issues can come from multiple sources. Hormonal imbalances caused by early alter of the reproductive system is just one cause. It could be the dogs parents were nuts too. Or that the dog was raised improperly. It often happens that fear and anxiety are caused by coddling and mishandling.

Your comments about the effects on mental health also hits home. He's displayed fear aggression since he was about 8 months old and I haven't been able to correct it. He is pretty well behaved and listens but because of the certain circumstances (Covid and Taking care of my father with terminal cancer who passed) I was not able to socialize him properly enough at a younger age. I have female pit also who is very sweet and not aggressive at all and they get along greet until they are outside and start playing fetch or tug..the male always goes into a VERY aggressive mode and won't go after the ball, only my female. This happened at my friend's house the other day also and he did it with her rotty when they were playing out side. He is not fixed yet and everyone is telling me to get it done including my vet. I was told by the peoplel I bought him from to wait 18-24 months like you have said. Just curious on if missing those early life socialization moments made my dog aggressive/fearful and will be made to neuter him to curb it. Can some dogs just not play well in high intensity moments like fetch with other dogs? I just never saw him show any aggression really until those moment playing. He also is fairly fearful when I took him to the disc golf course yesterday and when I would sit by him he would try to put his head in my lap or crawl on me. He is so good with people and kids only shown aggresion to dogs particularly larger dogs. I'm willing to stay hard on the training or hire a trainer to help. I live in Arizona.

@@brynlpz83 how much research did you do before getting these dog's? Why would you get 2 young dog's around the same time? One puppy is hard enough. The American pit bull terrier is a pure breed of working dog registered with the ADBA since 1909. Red nose isn't called that because the dog has a red nose. Here's why a true red nose American pit bull terrier is from the ofrn old family red nose bloodline the only sure way of telling is by the pedigree. Because not all dog's that have ofrn blood in them have the Characteristics Of a heavybred Old family red nose dog. Characteristics like. Red nose, Red lips, Redskin, red Toenails, I say red But it's more pink. Heavybred old family red nose Dogs also tend to be larger in size list then other American pit bull terrier bloodlines. The dog called cinnapied Is A old family red nose Dog. Look up Hemphill Dog's and you will see what I'm talking about. The American pit bull terrier was used for dog fighting for more than 50 years resulting in the breed commonly having some level of dog aggression. This is more often than not. Some tightlybred dog from linebreeding can be very intense dog's that will never get along with other dog's And the best you can do is work on the reactivity of the dog so it's not lunging for the dog that's across the street. The purebred American pit bull terrier can have crazy prey drive and getting a reliable recall once they are going for something is hard to obtain. Getting a reliable recall takes a lot of work and isn't always something that can be done. That being said if you decide to let the dog off leash be very careful because it only takes one time for somebody's dog to end up dead. The American pitbull terrier is not a dog for the majority of people and shouldn't be taken to dog parks even if 9 times out of 10 every thing is okay that 1 time will happen eventually and that's the truth. Everything I'm telling you is the truth I love the APBT and think they are the best breed in the world. But I know that they aren't the breed for the majority of people.

@@logansilva8017 What? I rescued my girl pit when she followed me home from the park 7 years ago. She is amazing with other dogs and nursed my 1st pitbull I owned for 13 years when she got brain cancer. My new pit is a true rednose pitbull,he cost me a pretty penny and I have the papers to prove it and ive known the kennel for 8 years and can trace is lineage a looong way back. Not all Rednoses will be huge tho like you said. Traits are passed down from the individual dog. He is a high energy dog like my 1st pit and I'm working with a trainer with him and he is doing better as I work him out for an hour and half before I go to work. He needs a lot more exercise than my other pitbulls I've owned and I'm learning this. I am not a novice pitbull owner but at the same time just never owned a male dog before and wanted to get some out side opinions on getting him fixed as I've been told it would make him less aggressive down the line but I'm learning that won't do anything and I'm taking the proper steps as a responsible dog owner. I didn't just buy this dog on a whim. I waited 2 years to get another dog after my 1st dog passed and my other pitbull wasn't planned on keeping after I found her 7 years ago but she was so sweet I ended up keeping her. @@brynlpz83 I'm glad to hear that you are not someone that just got a dog without having some knowledge on what you were getting. It's always good to hear that someone took the time and prepared for the dog that they have. All to often It's the other way around. I had said that tightly bred ofrn dog's tend to be somewhat larger than other American pit bull terrier bloodlines and this is true William Joseph Lightner Is quoted talking about the larger size of them. You do know who he was right? I don't know why I assumed both of your dog's were young and around the same age my bad. I think I was telling someone else that it isn't good getting 2 puppies at once. What I was saying about the American pitbull terrier and the traits in the breed is a fact they are traits that have been selectively chosen and if you know about gamebred dog's then you know dog aggression is prevalent and all American pitbull terriers come from fighting dog's how far back in the pedigree may differ. With dog fighting being outlawed in 1975 it was still going strong for quite some time as the penalties were not harsh. Still most breeders dog's are GT. Everyone that has a yard and breeds the American pit bull terrier is breeding for prey drive and for a functioning working dog. These dog's are kept on chain setups for a reason it's safest for the dog's themselves and all other animals. Kennel accidents do happen. If your dog needs more exercise setup a spring pole or buy or make a slat mill or find a trustworthy dog walker. If you have a paperd red nose some where in the lineage is Hemphill and Lightner dog's even if way back in the lineage linebreeding carries the traits and some of these dog's are hot as 🔥.

Stan Rawlinson dog trainer website is excellent, retired now but his view is basically the same. Hormones are crucial for good health. The healthy and happy dog website is the best website. Also Dr Karen Becker and Dr Andrew Jones on this channel are excellent. Dr Michelle kultzler again is a must look. In the UK Dr Christopher Day down Oxford is excellent and a very honest and not expensive vet. Dog's natural magazine online is excellent and free. The main downside of the conventional methods of sterilisation are endocrine disorders and skeletal deformaties as they Rob the dog of its hormones. Check out the four study's done on vislas, golden retrievers, rottweilers and German shepherds. Every visla regardless of age or sex had more fear based phobia's as a result of no hormones, I have seen this myself. There are better methods of sterilisation, ovary sparing spay, tubular ligation and vacectomy, ironically basically the same methods we use on humans. Interestingly the Nordic countries don't routinely neuter their dogs unless there is a good medical reason, but unlike the UK and American they don't have a dog overpopulation problem, why, because they have better laws for breeders and owners. Most vets recommend early neuter before 6 months of age, yearly vaccinations, monthly chemical flee and worm treatment, highly processed foods, no wonder so many dog's are getting sick. I use natural products for flee and worms, I have only vaccinated once as a pup then titer tested, feed whole natural food, and have kept my dog intact being a very conscientious owner. Do your homework people for the sake of your dog.

i had a 13 yr pit. wasnt neutered and eventually couldn't urinate. it was a terrible situation. Got a pit puppy now 4 months and was planning on neurting but after watching i am a bit heist. sounds like its just best to wait to 18 months atleast

You could’ve neutered your pit at any time. It is not uncommon to neuter one at nine or 10 years of age if they start having prostate problems. The keyword is IF.

Prevention of issues that any older male dog may face, is actually cheaper than dealing with the situation when it explodes. All dogs need owners who can think well in advance, about preventative care on many potential issues. It is so bad to see that neutering is the only "preventative" care advertised today.

Hi David. I really liked this video. I have a mix of Germine Shepherd/Husky. He is 7 months old. We heard that if we get him neutered, he would stop humping people and stop lifting his leg to mark his territory on car tires and so forth. What is your professional opinion on the benefits of neutering? I really need help with this one. I have subscribed to your channel so we could learn more to make our dog and us happy. Thanks for sharing your videos.

Neutering him will not help his behavior. You can affect that only with good training. Early neutering will likely cause growth issues. Wait until he is 18 months and get help with the training issues.

So do you think you should spay neuter even after 18 months?
@protectiondogsalesPDS

For a female that is not being bred I would say yes. Heat cycles are messy and hard of everyone including the female. For males it's totally a case by case call, but there is no harm in it.

The vet wants to neuter my male pitbull lab mix when he is 6 months old. I'm not sure what to do. Makes me feel uncomfortable. He is going for training and socialization at the moment.

Training is far superior to surgery when it comes to proper behavior. Work him hard and stay away from that vet.

Hello David, I've been researching on KZbin and came across your video. Along with your video I've seen others and have come to the conclusion that it isn't such a good idea to get my 1 y.o. Schnauzer neutered. I have a 3 y.o. Schnauzer that I've had since he was a puppy. He is well natured and is good around people, kids, and other pets. Just recently I thought that it would be to his benefit for me to adopt a buddy for him so he would have a buddy to interact with. So I've adopted this 1 y.o. Schnauzer and thought that I should have him neutered to avoid any confrontation between them. They've been together for a week now and have not had any issues with them. They are both mild mannered, they are not aggressive towards each other and they both mind and are very obedient. Please give me your opinion on having two intact males living together, they are free to roam around the house and don't have crates.

I run packs of males together with no incident. It's obedience and training that matters, not testicles. There are plenty of dog aggressive, asshole, neutered dogs to prove that just neutering doesn't help much. Just go to the dog park to see that in action. I am not anti-neuter/spay. Just wait for the dog to mature.

Are there any health or mental benefits to fixing your dog at all when it gets older?
@protectiondogsalesPDS

It is case by case, but a female not being used for breeding is still under a lot of stress with each cycle. So, I spay them after two years of age if they are not going to be bred. No harm at that age and less stress.

The growth plates don't close in larger dogs until they're 1-2 years old. It will cost a bit more but you can have him x-rayed to see if the growth plates are closed and only do it after they are closed.

But, but, but how are the vets going to make money $$$$$ off of the sick dogs created by early spay/neuter? And PETA needs to alter every dog on the planet so their agenda of a "dogfreeworld" can be realized.

Pediatric sterilization. It is barbaric, imagine cutting the balls/ovaries of a 3yr old boy or girl. Of course there will be health consequences from doing that to a child! That is my reason I will not adopt a shelter dog, the health of those poor dogs is compromised by their very own rescuers. Shelter puppies get desexed at 8 weeks old, that is insane to me, poor babies =(

How can you say there's no benefits????? How about the cancer's it can prevent? Do you know how many TVTs I come across on a daily basis in YOUNG dogs. Vaginal prolapses? I work with a veterinary rescue. I find your statement that we are harming animals because we think the human race a s flawed, to be insulting. Part of my job is helping people, as well as their pets. It's also scientifically proven to have health and mental benefits! I see those benefits every single day. The dogs we sterilise thrive, and There's a distinct difference just comparing them to the poorer health of their unsterilised companions.

You work with rescue dogs who usually have owners that can't provide proper basic care for their animals let alone vet care. You also probably work with people who have lots of animals that just just breed willy nilly, which means lots of inbreeding and genetic issues. Well bred purpose dogs definitely don't fall in that category. The people that breed those dogs breed them for a working purpose. That means they have to be structurally and mentally sound in order to properly complete the tasks asked of. I'm sorry you have have to see the horrors of the other side of this. However if everyone went through an ethical breeder then we wouldn't have the pet over population issues we have today.

The moment I read Veterinary RESCUE I cringed. The majority of RESUCES and Societies that are extremists like HSUS, PETA, ALF, etc. do not want domestic animals to exist at all. Many think they can be eliminated in 1 generation if they kill or fix every last one on the planet. Also I think the pet overpopulation is a load of crap, if there is such an overpopulation in shelters why are many of them importing diseased dogs from other countries or actually breeding dogs that come in to have more of that so important "puppy" commodity? I had two Shih Tzu females (one died at 7 due to small cell cancer and one I just had put down at 14.5 yrs old due to old age issues) and we still have a 12 year old male Yorkshire Terrier who is intact and his only issue are his teeth are bout gone. I have seen more dogs fixed before 1.5 years old with health/behavioral issues than those that were intact their whole life. So yes there is no benefit to prevent cancer. It also ticks me off to know end that these radical groups have got vet spay and neutering rabbits now. Rabbits are a prey animal and very touchy, many who go under anesthesia don't come out of it. Let alone why pay $200+ on a $30 rabbit.
