This is actually what I desire to do!! Establish a nonprofit & build a social enterprise model into it. This nonprofit will tackle the complex problem of the rising number of single mothers living below the poverty line.

Why is it that we hear so little about social enterprise? Charity and business seem to be much more in the public eye.
@AmberMelanieSmith3 жыл бұрын
Not sure! I've always wondered that. My theory is that it is hard for people to wrap their brains around the idea that an entity can be BOTH profit and social-change oriented. It goes against cultural norms (at least in the USA), where it is generally believed helping others has to be completely separated from financial growth. That is a belief that ironically also harms nonprofits from becoming financially sustainable.

Thank you for the information... would you stand by this information now 2yr later?

Generally yeah! I think there may be some cool new examples of social enterprises I'd share now that have emerged in the past few years - so I'm sure an update video will happen! :)

What would be the best way to register my clothing line if I wanted to donate 10-20% towards a nonprofit project
@AmberMelanieSmith Жыл бұрын
Hey Ashley, you can simply have your clothing line be a business of whatever structure you feel fits it best, then make donations to charity of whatever amount. No special structure needed for a business to simply donate to charity. :)

How do you pivot from a program where you receive donations of items and give them away to selling donated items cheaply? This is challenging as I am not sure when to pull the plug on the give aways?
@AmberMelanieSmith Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, the IRS has some helpful guidelines on how to do this within the rules: www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/contributors/information-on-donated-property-for-charitable-organizations
@codeAlongwith Жыл бұрын
@@AmberMelanieSmith Just to be clear, I want to do this in a legitimate manner, as in procure items with a clear explanation of intention to sell them cheaply. Obviously donated items remain as donations to the people they are intended for. The problem is how and when to change the program. I am in Australia. This is a very frustrating point.

So I have an LLC but I'm wanting to help the community and charge very little for my services. I want to build up my community and make sure they have everything they need to succeed but the lack of profit is hold us back. If we were to become more of a social enterprise would we be able to change our tax structure in order to receive grants and donations?
@AmberMelanieSmith2 жыл бұрын
A social enterprise is a business model, but doesn't necessarily relate to your legal structure. You could be a business and operate in a way that creates social impacts without being a nonprofit. If you instead changed to a nonprofit legal structure, you might be eligible for grants and donations, but you'd also have to have a board of directors (who can't be a majority of people with a relationship with you, per the IRS) who votes on your annual budget, who your Executive Director is, and what their salary may be.
