Once again, Lingq demands after clicking every single word that a definition is to be chosen. How can I pick a definition when I don't know what the word means? Words in Tagalog can have many meanings. How do I know which to pick. Then if a verb if I can even determine the root to look it up, how can I know since affixes can change the meaning.

@@GeorgeDeCarlo LingQ is just a language tool, put the work and find away to become familiar with your target language. When I started LingQ yrs ago it didn’t fit me, until I went elsewhere and became familiar with the bases of the language. Now LingQ is all I need until I want to dive into some advanced grammar

I have heard you say one will never sound like a native speaker. Not that accents are bad but it is not necessarily so that it's impossible. The late Prof. Brown of Bangkok years ago used the Natural Method. They found by accident those who never practiced ended up sounding just like native speakers. The number of hours was 1,000 as told to me by the owner of the KZbin channel below. See comments where he finally got back to me. I think what happens with practicing too early is that the brain is working to set up the muscles and nerves but practice fights that process. Fortunately I seldom practiced, actually never, since I did not want to sound like an idiot due to harsh laughter from Filipinos. When I said words after listening to hundreds of hours of people reading children's books a teacher was surprised as to my pronunciation. I tell people to listen and put off practicing as long as possible. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4ibfmeAqJmIeKM

As I've been learning several languages for a quite some time, I've noticed that I have more courage to start speaking and fewer worries about making mistakes while doing so. I guess the experience I've been building might have granted me some tolerance. I'm still shy and my introverted personality doesn't help but I'm not afraid of making mistakes myself. I'm more afraid of not understanding the other person, so I tend to wait until I'm confident in my listening skills. In my opinion, being able to understand what the other person is saying can be more important than speaking itself. But, if the opportunity arises, I would take it even if I'm not ready. Kudos to you Steve👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I agree 100%! You will never be ready if you wait. Someone once told me that "use the words you know, talk about the subject that you understand." The more you speak (use), the better your English becomes. It is about repetition of what you have known, and from there, your vocabulary got expanded, your skills got polished.

Very good point (WE ARE NEVER GONNA BE READY). Many people don't realize that every second spent learning something matters and could contribute to them being able to produce words and speaking well enough to a native speaker. It's not that they are not ready. They (some people) are just fearful, they just don't know where to start, and this is what I try to help my learners do.

Interesting how Russian keeps slipping in, even though it's clear that Steve knows the vocabulary in Polish - there was even the self-correction in "ważniesze niż" - he almost said "ważniesze чем" but then caught himself. I have exactly the same wire-crossing when I try to speak French - Spanish keeps coming out, even for simpler sentences which I for a fact know in French. It's really difficult to fight it and that slows the speaking to the point where one just wants to give up. Really appreciate this video for being encouraging!

My native language is Hungarian, I do speak Slovak, I understand Czech. I also understood your Polish speech well! You are a great inspiration to me - I'm learning English now. It's as you say: we improve in what we practice. I read a lot and watch a lot of documentaries and English videos, so I can understand both written and spoken English. But since I don't talk because I don't have the opportunity - and I don't have the need - it doesn't go that well, but I can easily imagine that if I would get into such an environment, it wouldn't be difficult to get into it.

That's very impressive of you, and you take great pride and joy in language abilities. However, it's not true that you can't talk English. You can practice speaking, at home. Even reading this, you can practice your pronunciation. You can also think out loud. You already know English very well, it would be a waste if you don't practice speaking. Everytime you think, you can practice pronunciation.

Hey Steve, I have an idea for a future LingQ update : allow that whenever you select a LingQ, you can see it in all the contexts in which you already encountered it on the platform. This way, whenever checking the word,s meaning when you don't remember it, you would be reminded of all the contexts in which you've met the word, which makes it more memorable than simply a translation.

I think people need to understand what is in the way learning, so we can get this out of the way. You should start speaking immediately. Even if it's just a word. Waiting to speak is like waiting to jump I to the water. If you want to wait, sure, wait as long as you want..but you will delay swimming. Something with language learning. What if you learn bad habits or bad pronunciation. As long as you are conscious, you can change and adjust these things. Westernerss, especially Americans are absolutely dog shit, at learning languages. Let's get over our fears and admit that we are scared of making mistakes, then we can move on and actually learn something.

It depends, but basically if you want to and you are self motivated the answer is you should, because we self correct through engagement and time, however, I am a language teacher and many kids are not learning because they want to but because they are in a bilingual school. In this instance they are often forced to speak before they are ready and this is the worse thing you can do. If the student does not want to speak, wait, the language and speaking skills wil emerge when they are ready.

Stephen Krashen has said that you should not make someone speak until they are ready. I don’t think it would help my basic German. In French on the other hand, I would benefit because I have a decent vocabulary and grasp of the language. I have in the distant past spoken with French speakers. With friends I was fine, with strangers it was horrible, and probably did far more damage than good, as I felt so ill at ease and uncomfortable. In fact I gave up for 30 years such was the damage to my confidence. As I say, I think it depends on the person. Steve is blessed with a relaxed and confident nature which favours his approach.

It is especially difficult when you have many languages you can read or listen to when it comes to speaking. My child and I were having a conversation about water temps liked around the world, and she asked how to order water in Japanese. I lived in Japan for years. I worked in Japan. I translated for the US Navy in Japan... and my brain couldn't come up with the word for water in Japanese as we were heading to her appointment in the USA. I got water in Mandarin, Spanish, and French suddenly, but not Japanese. I told her I would have to remember later when I wasn't focused on driving. Something so small that I did for almost everyday while living in that country since I ate out a lot, and I couldn't come up with the word. 😂 I finally remembered after I put her to bed later that night. I input 11 languages, but my town is bilingual in two: English and German. I scared off a mother who said she knew French a few years ago, too. I switched to French and she admitted that she was just high level on Duolingo. She couldn't speak it. I offered to help, but she was too afraid of messing up. I made my other daughter order us all ice creams in Spanish yesterday, but she felt horrible when she heard the worker laughing with another about her spanish while I was paying. I could hear them, too, but I told her that it was good she was trying. She said she didn't feel good. I reminded her that my English isn't always good, either, and I still use it. She felt a little better then. So, people need to remember that using our languages is about us trying to communicate. As long as we try, then how else can we learn?

Here's my analogy: Let's say you've never listened to (Western) music before. Should you just listen to one or a couple songs, and then immediately go to the piano? No. If you were trying to practice one song, maybe you could just practice and listen to that one song. But what if your goal was to be able to improvise and solo with a band? You'd need to know what music sounds like, and why most people agree that some things sound harmonious vs. discordant, or easy to dance to vs. not, etc. You need the ears of people who are "fluent." OK, but let's say you've listened to a lot of music. You have the ears of a native. Can you just go to the piano and play a masterpiece? Well, no. Some people might say, "Oh, just sit and play around with the piano long enough, and if you use your ears, you'll start playing what you hear in your head," and that works for some people, but I think for a lot of people, learning about scales, keys, chord progressions, etc. really helps. Having words for these things and practicing them a bit helps them pin them down, consolidate their thoughts, and use them as tools to help construct what they want to play. And the main thing I've found is that, if you ever think, "Oh, this sounds easy to play; I shouldn't have much trouble playing it," but you haven't been practicing, chances are you're going to fumble and realize it's not that easy.

I agree with him~ actually i dont think communicating in target language is that helpful. Because while we communicate, we only use words that we know and we only can listen to what we know. So we have to prepare for communicating and put a lot of input which are reading and listening.

parabéns, ótimo video. Pratico input todos os dias com desenhos, séries e vídeos no KZbin que gosto (no seu canal também já que não sou fluente em inglês).

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what does it mean to start speaking? If you read a Duolingo sentence out loud, have you started speaking? If you have an iTalki session where you say two words, have you started speaking?

I have been teaching myself Portuguese for a year and a half, And I still can't understand nearly anything in spoken Portuguese. I can read and write a little.. piece something together atleast.. grammar is wrong but natives would understand.. but I haven't been able to understand words much. I've watched movies, listened to podcasts, shows, Music, KZbin. KZbin has been the easiest, but I think it's because there's subtitles in each language, English and Portuguese to go along with it. And I try not to use them And I can do alright.. but when it comes to podcasts I don't understand anything

I'm not as good as I dream to be in my own language 😅 Really, perfectionism is discouraging. It is better to use and enjoy whatever we have acquired so far 👍🏼
