Agreed. Also agreed with the comment above me, I’ve seen too many good samaritans unwisely step into an altercation. Anytime I think of a active shooter scenario, a few things come to my mind. 1. Number of bad guys/how they handle their firearm and move. 2.can i, Realistically…take this threat out. 3.cover or concealment. Is there sufficient cover for me to safely engage from? 4.I do engage,How am I going to ensure the Police know I’m a good guy and not a threat. Great video. Great topic. One thing I’ve learned as I matured.Having your gun is not always going to be enough. Training and knowledge can mean the difference between you winning that gun fight or dying.

We had an active shooter situation at a grocery store in my town last year. Reports said an employee went after the shooter with a produce knife and was shot and killed while the only customer carrying concealed, that we know of, was helping to evacuate other customers out through the stock room. Guarding evacuees and confronting the threat are both heroic actions, I just wish the employee had more effective means to defend himself and others. I haven’t yet come to a conclusion of what I would do in that situation

I carried a G19 as my Duty Weapon for about 15 years, up bro my retirement in 2009. I have had a Carry Permit here in Florida since I moved here from NJ in 1997. Having said this, I can only respond to this question based on all my training and experience. Never once in all my experience, on or off duty, I have never had to use my weapon to defend someone or myself But I have thought about what I would do in this situation, if I had to respond. IMO, I think It becomes a very personal decision and it will be based on your inner most feelings about shooting your gun and possibly killing someone or being Killed trying to save someone! I can truly say that I would use my Weapon only to save myself or a loved one from being killed! By the same token, I wound Not try to save someone else from possibly being killed, using my EDC Gun! This may seem harsh or selfish to some But My Family needs me to come home every night and this is the most important thing to Me!

I agree. People who outsource their security to strangers are accepting the risk that they may be left defenseless and/or abandoned when their life is at stake. (Watch the Uvalde TX school footage if you think law enforcement will intervene to save you.) That's their choice, and intervening in someone else's struggle creates tremendous liability and risk to yourself. Who will protect your loved ones going forward if you are dead? They are priority #1, which makes you priority #1 as their protector. All that said, every situation is unique, and exceptions are sometimes the moral course of action.

Superb advice! Lots of us carry for self-protection. But this type of event requires a lot of thought processes, knowledge, and skill. Frankly, things most of us are not trained to do. Please make a follow up video where you talk about accomplices. What comes to mind is the Joseph Wilcox incident. A shooter entered a Walmart and began yelling and waving around a gun while his girlfriend accomplice followed about 15 yards behind, pretending to be just a normal person. She was his cover. So when Joseph, a good Samaritan, carrying concealed, drew his weapon and prepared to fire upon the male shooter, his female accomplice, executed Joseph, by shooting him in the head without him even knowing. John Lovell would say, “warrior poets should stop an active shooter,“ but you better have very little to lose, and really know how to assess the entire situation. There is no way I could just run away and let people get killed. I saw limited combat in Desert Storm. I was shot at multiple times. I returned fire multiple times. I saw two guys in my unit get shot, one later died. When it happened I had no time to deal with emotions. I was otherwise occupied. When it was over I cried like a baby. But I could not allow that to happen until the need to protect myself and deal with the enemy was over. Anyone who has been in that situation knows exactly what it's like. When you are in a situation like that, you kind of go into a different state of mind. You forget about everything else and become hyper aware of what is going on, and the situation around you. You are 100% in that moment. At the time I was married with two young children. This might sound cold, but I never thought about them. I had a job to do, and every bit of my attention had to be on that job if I was going to survive. Once the situation is over, and assuming you survived, then there will be time to think and feel about other things. But in that moment, you use every bit of your training and experience to deal with the situation and wipe out everything else. Over three decades later I can still get emotional thinking about it. My kids are now grown, and I am a grandfather of three. Sadly I lost my wife to cancer.

Alex I think your priority should be get yourself out of the situation and only use your gun if you absolutely have to. Like if the shooter is right near you and you know is coming for you. Then you save yourself and save others in the process. But I think other than that the scene will be too chaotic to know what to do that will help people. Unless you are in a situation like the Club Q and you see someone else fighting the shooter. Then you step in because you're right there. But I think priority the biggest help you can do is not become a target and immediately remove yourself from the situation. If you come across someone along the way help them run away with you. Excellent advice. Always worth remembering how in today’s society, mass murderers and serial killers are perversely treated as celebrities while a regular guy or gal who steps up to the plate to stop them is demonized. The most recent thing I read regarding a breakdown of what occurred at the Greenfield mall was that the armed citizen pushed his girlfriend out of the way, took cover, used support and fired four rounds from a distance of approximately 40 yards. Two hit the murderer and two missed. The armed citizen had to stop shooting because hysterical shoppers ran between his sights and the murderer. The armed citizen closed to about 25 yards and fired for more shots that hit the mark, then moved in to approximately 25 feet where he fired the last two rounds and the murderer was effectively no longer an imminent danger. So on the range, how many can, in 15 seconds drop behind cover at 40 yards and shoot four, the move to the 25 through obstacles to simulate tables, chairs, and runners to shoot another four, and then to about eight and a half yards to fire two? Remember 15 seconds.

If you're going to be at a mall or some other large and public place, I'd highly recommend purchasing and training on a backpack gun. My personal choice would be a Sig Rattler in .300BLK (these run just shy of $3k), but you can easily get it done with something like the CZ Scorpion Micro which costs 1/3 the price. Having something like this will make it infinitely easier to engage a threat at distances beyond the typical pistol effective range if need be. if that's what you decide you need to do, with the bonus (or detriment if you're not careful/aware) of .300BLK being able to go through thin cover that would normally stop something like 9mm.

Hey, if you're in the military, they give you medals for ending the lives of individuals who wear a different uniform than yours. In the civilian world, they give you very long prison sentences for ending the life of a violent psycho. Some states actually make it illegal to shoot in defense of a 3rd party. Unless that 3rd party is a direct family member. Meaning, in an active shooter scenario, if you defend the strangers around you; you're going to prison! Even if you stayed legal, you still have to hire a very expensive lawyer to prove that fact in criminal court. Followed by hiring another lawyer to defend you when the guy's low-life family members sue you in civil court for literally everything you own because for some "brilliant" reason THAT is perfectly legal for them to do so. Even though they might be very happy that someone finally got rid of him for them. So have fun being a Homeless hero in a cardboard box, on top of dealing with the psychological trauma of having shot someone. Followed by the trauma of your wife leaving you and taking the children with her, when you need your family's support the most. Screw this Sheepdog fantasy. You are in charge of your own safety and that of your family. No one else's.

An outstanding video. Defensive pistol combat is unlike anything you can prepare for merely with practice at a static range. A few ideas. 1. Find a training organization that offers curriculum in defensive pistol combat. Hard to find, but there are some. 2. Find an outdoor range that hosts IDPA competition: evolutions for time and accuracy on complex stages requiring movement and target discrimination. 3. At a static range, use a timer, mix snap caps with live rounds in the mag, progressively move the target hanger out to distances that are difficult for you. A shot timer adds stress and stress acts against proficiency. Repeat, repeat and repeat until you gain inoculation against stress. 4. It is your first stress shot at distance against an active shooter that matters the most, so become proficient at it.

To make long shots while adrenaline is running is likely a challenge for me (possibly most), unless you're trained to do so like a LEO or active military.

If I'm out and about with my family and an active shooter situation happens, then my first focus is on moving my family to safety. If I can get them out without being targeted, or find a safe place to hide, I'm out of there/hiding/barracading and getting gun out at the ready in case that changes. If at any point I find that moving them to safety will not be possible without engaging the shooter or if the shooter is moving towards us, then I'll engage.

I carry, but I have never had the desire to go in like a knight in shining armor to save the damsels in distress. Many, many years ago, it was not uncommon to see people become the Good Samaritan and help others. But in these times, often you will find yourself condemned, sued, or even charged with a crime...assuming you survive the altercation. You may even be targeted by the friends or family of the one you confronted. Now, if it is not an immediate threat to my family members or myself, I'm outta there.

Is it your business or will it directly involve you - then YES! If its just an armed robbery, be a good witness. Being a CCW does not make you a cop!

I carry everywhere than I can do so legally. Always assessing my surroundings to get an idea of what I would do if something goes sideways and the number of shooters is unknown. My question is about other good guys who have the same idea in an active shooter situation, stopping the bad guy. I’m not on a hunting trip, just trying to fight my way to the door so I can go home to my family. I don’t want to mistake an armed good guy for a bad guy, but I can’t trust anyone who isn’t within arm’s reach of me. How would we recognize each other and communicate to stop the threat?

Very well said. That is a tough decision everyone needs to make for themselves. As for me, my goal is to get my family to safety. In that moment I'll be looking for exits and if the threat appears, I'll take appropriate action. But that's not why I carry. If I'm alone, it'll have to be case by case.

Running is probably your best bet... but you should still be carrying. That is why hip carry is the best. It allows you to run full speed and have quick access to your gun just in case.

It's most definitely! A tough choice to make if and when that day comes. I myself and my thoughts on that. I will NOT know and can't say right now what I would do now. Until that day, witch I 🙏 NEVER comes.

This was so good! I cannot tell how often I have thought about what if I were ever in such a horrific situation. One of my first combat actions would likely be launching some pepperballs or pepper+tear-gas mix projectiles from my Byrna launcher to where the homicidal assailant is, for, whether the projectiles strike him/her directly or not, the chemical powder will nonetheless spread through the air, & once this is inhaled, the assailant will be so distracted & considerably diminished by coughing, difficulty breathing, burning eyes, etc, that I would be able to more easily, if need be, close the distance, &/or make the shots I would need to make that servant of Satan would be incapable of harming anyone else. Enough instances of bloodthirsty murderers just showing up to shoot, or to stab, or to hack, or to bludgeon, or to otherwise viciously attack people exists to make it wise to have a thought of, "What if....?" Thanks for the insightful & honest information, friend.

If one seriously considered possible scenarios and risk waiting for multiple police officers with backup , radios and vehicles is probably the optimal choice. Many things quickly can deteriorate up to and including loss of life / permanently disabled. Choose wisely!

Remember, disengaging/escaping does not preclude re-engaging on your terms.

If the “justice” system wasn’t so difficult to navigate I would definitely step in on an active shooter if I knew 100% that it was an active shooter randomly killing people. My first thought will be to escape and make sure all my loved ones do the same. I’m only engaging if the threat is stopping me and my loved ones from escaping
