Maybe this will help someone. I have had both experiences with coconut oil. Both negative and positive. If I put it on my scalp, it gets very itchy! But if I avoid my scalp entirely, it's such an amazing prepoo for my hair strands. It used to feel dry and brittle to my strands if I use it on its own, but then I combine it with water mist and it does the exact opposite, makes my hair super soft. Last thing, I put it on my hair and give it a little time. This is so helpful because sometimes it just needs a little time to penetrate.

Coconut oil as a pre-poo treatment will make your hair “feel” soft after shampooing. It will also make it easier to detangle before shampooing. But, that’s a short-term benefit from drenching your hair with an excessive amount of oil. This short-term benefit will come with long-term problems. The purpose of shampooing your hair is to get rid of oily/waxy buildup. These “gentle” shampoos are already not strong enough especially if we’re drenching our hair with oil before using them. If you feel like pre-pooing is working for you, great. But, there are other ways to dangle your hair. Your hair drying out so fast is due to PRODUCT/OIL BUILDUP. It’s very important to wash out at least most of the product on your hair and scalp on a consistent basis

Can you please do a video on coconut oil vs fractionated coconut oil? 🥥 I've read that fractionated coconut oil is stripped of lauric acid, the acid that protects the hair from protein loss. If that is true, fractionated coconut oil would be a great alternative for low porosity hair (as we are prone to protein overload). I'm currently avoiding regular coconut oil for this reason but I would consider it in fractionated form. Thank you! 🙏

My high porosity hair can't go without it. I use it weekly as a prepoo, coupled with olive oil. I actually use grease as a sealant. It's almost as if the prepoo breaks up my sealant because if I skip prepoo, I notice a difference in washdays. The prepoo causes my hair to literally feel like butter during washday. Which makes it easier to detangle and even my deep conditioner penetrates better. It's amazing. I also started adding it to my daily oil mix. I did notice when I tried to use it by itself in my LCO step, it made my hair feel weird. I concluded maybe it just hardened on my hair and figured I should add it to my castor/olive mix to keep it liquified. And it worked! Adding it to my daily oil mix causes a conditioning effect on my hair.

Your video is very timely for me. I was hoping your content on coconut oil would be supportive of my conclusion regarding its use in my hair. I learned, after a year of using products containing coconut oil, that it hates my hair and my hair hates it! So, for the past six or so years, I have avoided any products containing coconut oil. But, about three months ago, I allowed myself to be talked into purchasing the full Blue Tansy line, which I loved the first time I used it. I only used it two additional times, about a month apart for each usage. Both times I noticed, rather than the usual brittle and hard hair result, my hair shed in long strands excessively. I am mortified that I have experienced another setback, due to using coconut oil! So, I have come to the conclusion that, although coconut oil may be formulated differently in these newer products, it can still be quite damaging for those of us, whose hair is allergic to it! 😒

I clarified with Pantene’s sulfate shampoo, still dull lifeless hair. My hair is sooooo dry, even weeks after doing this. I’ve also used chelating shampoos- no big difference. My hair has decreased in density due to breakage/ lifeless hair, and just looks terrible. What do you think happened here?? & how do I fix this??

Yes, a gentle clarifying shampoo and deep conditioner without protein for at least two weeks. The one I am using is Mielle Protein-Free Hydrating Conditioner. Also I’m using PM Awapuhi shampoo. That is so interesting about the coconut oil. It seems to make the end result of my shampoos better but I don't really use it as a detangler.
