My kid goes to a local kindergarten in the outskirts of Shanghai and it's the best thing we can choose. It's amazing and beyond affordable, the amount of care and education they get for as little as 30-50 USD per month is beyond my comprehension. If you check international kindergarten you would pay as much as 5000 USD per month and I doubt the services they provide is any better than local kindergartens. That's like 100 times more expensive. At the local kindergarten we have a community app that reports all activities from the kid entering the kindergarten to play times, lunch etc. and leaving the place by swiping a card that you can see on the APP. These international kindergarten and schools are rip offs that local Chinese are willing to pay for the status to brag.

Partly it's similar to the luxury goods effects. Learning English and being able to speak beautiful American English have been considered by the generations of 60's and 70's to be as kind of elites status. That view, however, has become less the case by 90's and 00's. American English will be dethroned gradually as did the British English, as younger Chinese are becoming more upbeat about their system.

The growth , improvement, safety, infrastructure, cashless economy, communication, public transport, cleanliness, connectivity, services, cost of living, green cities, EVs , cheap everything ( electronics, furniture, clothes, food, taxis, services ) etc are just world class! None of what you mentioned are "conservative values" these are just normal values most people who don't live under a hyper capitalist society naturally have, china is great because of the communist party, china under a capitalist imperial government failed before, under the communist party it thrived, it has nothing to do with culture, it's the economy stupid! They have a socialist system that incentivizes adding value to society rather than accumulating capital, they punish corruption, they are not ruled by corporation, capital owners are controlled by the government not the other way around, their goal is common prosperity and they value ethnic diversity and personal freedom, the party is atheists who don't impose or fund churches, mosques, temples etc.. u r free to worship whoever you want or not at all, there's a real separation between religion and state, they're Marxists, they always think in a materialist way of analysis, you're free to love whoever u want, no matter what your gender, sexuality, ethnicity etc.. there's no discrimination under the law, abortion is legal and very accessable, conservatives claim china is conservative because they don't know anything, china is ruled by a COMMUNIST PARTY!

'overly stressful' is collective delusion. I went through Gaokao myself. It was a bit stressful, but not unbearable. My high school finished 5pm, and I went to yoga class in the evenings often. Don't know abt others, but for me international schools are purely wasting time. You could have learnt hundreds of times more during teenage years in public school. Also in public schools there are students from all backgrounds, but in international schools kids are all super rich. I still remember one of my public school teacher was from rural area and his family grew peach. He took us to his peach peach land during summer to harvest peach. Good memory
@HoSiva2 күн бұрын
The situation varies across the country and time. There are indeed many schools that will keep their students studying late till 9 or even 10pm. Physical exercises and PE classes are cut short and replaced with testings and more study time. DIfferent people handle pressure differently, too. Some kids simply can't take it but there's little to none mental support. There really needs to be a more balanced approach to the education system and hopefully with a dwindling population and better economic support, the competition won't be as fierce as now.

Calling what they have in China censorship is a bit misleading; particularly to Westerners. I've been in China since 2006 and I've never felt that the Chinese government is manipulating me; trying to mislead or hide from me information. Rather, my sense is that the government is seeking stability: what the Chinese commonly call: harmony, and what is harmful to social harmony is "censored". A primary result, which every foreigner comments on is public safety. In the West, censorship is manipulation. It has one function, to mislead, deceive, hoodwink, etc., the public.

Love Daniel and Ben together for amazing analysis in terms of geopolitics and life in China. The moment when my 13 years old daughter told me she saw her classmates using weed in school in UK I said it is the time to go home, luckily I taught her Chinese myself when we were in UK but like Daniel said we still have to send her to international school here in Beijing which is pricey, because there is no way she can go to public school anymore after studying in Uk for 10 years, she is doing really well after living in China for a year and half, she might go back to Uk for University but I know she will be a completely different person after 5 years of studying and living in China, those Confucius influences will be with her forever 😊

I'm based in Chengdu. My daughter attends a local private elementary school attached to a uni. I'm very happy with the change in law with regards to evening schools a few years ago. Since my daughter is mixed, she was immersed in Putonghua and the local dialect which I feel helps her to develop a firm identity, one that she might not question (too much) as she gets older. With regards to homework, at grade two, it's certainly more than what I hear from others attending more international schools but they are supported very well, surprisingly holistically and it's a collective experience in the sense that, they can share this common experience with others in their class, school and more so in the society. If a child falls behind, the teachers take on a great responsibility in helping the child and the parents to bring that child up to the median level. My views have shifted greatly over the years and can truly appreciate the system more now.

Very well said 👏, seeing is believing. As Mao said you have no right to comment until you have seen it! I was brought up & brain washed to hate the the Chinese communist government and the Chinese people. I was taught how bad the government was & how bad were the Chinese until about 35 years ago my mindset had totally changed. At that time I had chance to go to travel & work in Hefei city, Anhui province China for a short period. Once I had lunch outside a tiny restaurant and there were few kids stood around & looked at me eating. At that time China was still very poor. The rice I ate had sand in it. I couldn't bear & stopped eating although I didn't want to waste food. When the kids saw me stop eating, they came to me asked if they could have the leftovers because they were hungry! I said yes & also wanted to order more food for them but they refused. I was in tears seeing this! Later when I chatted with some older people & asked them how come they were so poor even without enough food to eat & íf they hated & blamed the communist government. They first asked me one simple question: if one person needs 5 to 6 bowls of rices for 3 meals daily, the government at least needs to provide 6 billion bowls of rices for her 1.2 billion citizens DAILY! Which government in the world could do such kind of work while China was sanctioned by the world at that time? They said it's much better than in the old days when China was ruled by the National Party some had to sell their children to exchange for food and it took time to change & improve! Since then I was totally changed as I travelled to China and contacted with the people more. As time goes by China gets better & better like nowadays. Needless to say anything, to fully feed 1.4 billion of people daily is a huge job, everyone has a fair chance of education & housing etc. are already a big success in this world & only the Chinese communist government can achieve these! 😊

China has just announced that its total Gdp exceeded 130 trillion RMB. When calculated in USD based on current exchange rate it's just about USD 18 trillion behind the US. But the purchasing power of RMB is far higher than the official rate 7.31. As can be seen in the comparison of prices of goods and services, cost of living in China is so much more affordable like housing, education, medical costs, food and transportation, etc, etc The purchasing power of RMB is almost like 1 rmb to 1.5 to 2 USD. The official exchange really has distorted the true size of China's economy. If the exchange rate is adjusted to reflect the real purchasing power of RMB, it should be 1 RMB to 1.5 to 2 USD, then the true size of China's economy should be equivalent to 150 to 200 trillion US dollars! That's such a gigantic size of economy unparalleled in human history.

@38:00 If you want to study the hard sciences, go to China. If you want to study things such as gender issues or take a course such as "How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse", go to USA.

I really wanted to move to China. I even know Mandarin is currently living in the USA working as a research assistant in a top university but as a brown person and being originally from a relatively impoverished country, I don't know moving to China is an option for us.

There are many "brown" youtubers who live and work in China. If you can find suitable work, that shouldn't be a problem.

The Chinese ranked their people through their Truthfulness, Fairness, and Righteousness. Since ancient times. Not totally but the majority. P/s: I love Truthteller. Thanks.

This discussion is truly one of its kind on KZbin. Very well done. It would be wonderful if you could expand the format to include parents who have children at local schools, international schools and bilingual schools. On a different note, I would love to see either of you or both of you do an in-person interview with Edward Snowden. I am curious to know if he can come to China for the interview. I follow his saga from when he left Hawaii. During his brief stay in Hong Kong, I was holding my breath to see if China would magically grant him an asylum. I believed that was his original intention. China was not ready at that time, and he was asked to move on. China with its strong movie industry could turn Edward Snowden's saga into a gripping political thriller. I am sure there is now a global audience for a well-made Snowden movie.

11:00 ...people are just nurtured to work against each other (in the West/US)... Daniel is absolutely spot on. Unfortunately, this is the essence of the so-called democracy, where the system fosters a cycle of opposition, for example, with Democrats seeking to knock down Republicans and vice versa. This is embedded in the ecosystem of Western style democracy and as time goes on the society becomes fractured and breaks down eventually. In the past, when the West were much richer with the stolen loot from the colonies, they could tolerate and sustain any differences, shortcomings and inadequacies but now that the resources have dwindled, things become broken. Thanks to both Daniel and Ben... 😘😍🥰

4:22 you guys also ignored that the fact the there are many many Chinese people who either lives or studying abroad and they share their stories, view and experience etc etc on Chinese social media. While the majority of Chinese people aren’t out there around the world, many of the Chinese are also able to see other part of world due to those who lives or studying abroad, and then also the VPN users that aren’t that interested in politics, but also paying attention to like US entertainment gossiping, tv shows etc etc. this kind of stuff seems to missing from the West or something ( I’m not saying that there’s none ). But again, the “free world” citizens criticize China and Chinese on GFW, but the GFW never ever block or prohibit the “free world” citizen from ever reaching the Chinese, engaging with the Chinese, talking to the Chinese. Yet, not many “free world” citizens dare to make that move! 🤷♂️

And they are reducing medical cost , I pay £40 a year cover medical cost of 70% and bought another additional medical insurance cost £18 to reimburse the 20%, so I ended up pay 10% on medical cost. And I always get to see a doctor in China on the same day and get my scan ,ultrasound on the same day.never need to wait to see a doctor.

Many people outside China don't know that Chinese government insist every Chinese children must have at least 9 years compulsory free education provided by the country. Parents only need to buy books and stationary. It is also an offend if the parents do not send their children to school starting from the age of 6 years old.

In my opinion, the pressure in school is precisely why China was able to advance so much since the 80's. China had great challenges to overcome. I believe it's Mencious who wrote something like to overcome great challenges, an individual must have gone through rigorous experiences. It's precisely the rigorous education that produced many who led the country out of the poverty and made it what it is today. Many generations of Chinese gone through Chinese education system and came out fine. Parents play a critical role.

Also the high school examination to university is very wise and important, which helps to decrease the inequality, kids from poorer families can actually have the chance to pursue dream of good life if they are willing to study hard. You don't get rejected by top unis just because of some rich kids' parents spend millions of dollar, everybody need to study hard for that.
