At the end of Monet’s life, it is my understanding that his eyesight was going. Of course I think he could see colors very well. When I went to Giverney, I was surprised how much his paintings looked like his garden. I thought he exaggerated more than he did.

Mr. Dewey, your video on risk taking, paired with your video on patterns ( in which you improvised and took risks with light breaking through) are very, very inspiring. You are so generous to share these painting videos, but aside from that, you are also so careful and thoughtful to describe each tiny decision, each brush mark in a step by step manner. Your paintings are filled with light and color and a vibrancy that I hope to master eventually, but until then, thank you so very much! You are a wonderful teacher😊

Yes Malcolm this video gave me ideas. I think fear is what is holding people back from trying and being more daring to express their inner self. When painting we should not see objects but only colors and the movement that is expressing the objects.

@@MalcolmDewey howdy Malcolm, so far, with my rain gauge, it seems like CT, may be experiencing a "normal" May rain season. I've become a bit paranoid regarding rainfall since CTs close brush with disaster, namely "day zero" , no water from our dams. I worked for CCT, in the water and sanitation directorate - and my work took out to all CCTs dams. Bro, I hope that your side of the world will get rain in time. Thank you for your advice, Malcolm. It looks so easy when you paint this beautiful impressionistic scene, but difficult when I try to paint loosely. I guess, the main reason is my inexperience with color choice, brushwork, etc. I decided to do some exercises with a limited palette trying to minimize the number of brushstrokes while painting relatively simple objects. However, I am not sure how to count the brushstrokes. For example, if I am turning a double-loaded brush while painting a circle (without taking it off the surface), is it one or 2 strokes? Thanks again for your demonstration and advices!
@MalcolmDewey3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marina. In many ways this process is also trial and error. Trust yourself to find the solution and you will.
@leesaunders54953 жыл бұрын
I’m wondering whether I can paint quite a formal kind of scene with a building and figures in a very loose way or whether it’s better to use a different subject matter. I’m not so good at figures but could maybe paint an impression of them The Russian painter you invited us to take a look at paints some scenes where the viewer sees things almost through a kind of mist and uses their imagination to fill in the gaps. I’d be interested in your thoughts on this.
@MalcolmDewey3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can paint buildings and figures loosely. Often it is better this way too. Look at Monet or Van Gogh. Both different, but both painted buildings loosely.

This is exactly super helpful for me! I am too cautious & serious in life. Thank you for the video! Is distance always cooler than warmer closer? Top of the trees are warmer than bottom? Also when the foreground is big, I feel hesitate to paint many loose strokes to cover the ground.
@MalcolmDewey3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the light is warm in the distance if the foreground is in shadow. The only way to deal with hesitancy is to jump and you will see that fear is an illusion. It is only painting after all 😊

lovelyyyyy!! Im so scared to start painting but this video came to me to say i have to do it now. Do u use linseed oil and turpentine? Did you decide the palette before starting?
@MalcolmDewey3 жыл бұрын
I like to use a standard palette or warm and cool colors - sometimes adding a different color depending on subject. No mediums are added to the paints. A little artists spirits to soften paint in the composition stage only. Turps is only for cleaning brushes after the painting is done. Use lots of tissue to wipe brushes clean during painting.

Beautiful painting. I have plateaued and looking to push myself to the next level and found this video inspiring. Did you do it all in one session or did you let parts “dry” before proceeding? Did you use any medium or is the thick juicy paint simply from volume of paint?
