I had a chance to review the exhaust brake, j brake, or whatever you want to call it. Ford/RAM are the only HD trucks that offer two settings while Chevrolet/GMC offer one setting. Find out the differences in this video!

It's real simple, full for heavy traffic and hills, auto for interstate, where you you want to back off, but not always slow way down.

I'm glad you added the edit @4:00. My experience with the auto switch on coming down hill was great. Never really had to use the brakes when my speed was moderate. (4-8 MPH over posted) Great feature to save wear and tear on both truck brakes and trailer brakes. Love your vids....

I set mine in auto when there are hills, other than that I use the tow/haul in conjunction with the trailer setting mode. This adjusts the shift pattern and has a much more aggressive downshift when slowing. I find that to be more than enough in my situation. Everyone has a different situation based on weight and size of trailers. Sure am glad to know it's there when/if I need it.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 4 жыл бұрын
Yea I noticed Auto is good for the hills and holding the speed where full is trying to slow you down. Tow/haul mode is really aggressive with Auto EB sense you have to tap the brakes and once you do it’s ready to down shift. Thanks for sharing!

I bet the driver behind you loved ya for all the braking. 😁 That was interesting JB because with my truck you turn on tow/haul and turn on the exhaust brake and it seems to only work when you press the brake. Thanks for sharing JB.

Hi, a great friction modifier to add to your crankcase is Formula 3. Sold in San Diego, Ca. Dramatically reduced the clacking. Respond if you want more info. Also, check out TK-3 704 fuel additive. An extensive write-up on their website. Gave the engine more pep. Benton .

Thanks Man! Thinking of getting one of these rigs in the future. One thing I wonder is how the exhaust brake would add some more wear and tear on the transmission clutches as it would put that energy through them during the downshifts...
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 3 жыл бұрын
No problem, the exhaust brake will reduce the wear and tear on the transmission because it doesn’t need to use the transmission at all to function. It will however put wear and tear on the turbocharger 👍🏾

Not sure if I’ll get an answer, but I’ve been told not to use the exhaust brake unless I’m hauling a trailer, otherwise, it will be hard on my engine. Thoughts?

Good video, as for EVs and regen, tesla's dont do that, they are full regen upon lift of throttle, brake does nothing to add regen. our motorhome, ISB300 5.9 2001, it has an exhaust break and engages the thing when we let off the throttle and downshifts. It recently blew apart an exhaust clamp. it does feel like regen tho.. too bad there is no battery for all the braking energy to go into....

I’ve driven an 04, 08, 12 and a 2018, 3600 Ram and always thought the location of the exhaust brake was really stupid. I would have put it on the end of the gear select handle.

I have a 2017 Cummins Ram 3500 with the 68RFE transmission. For some reason the "brain" controlling the engine brake and downshifting works better in auto than in full mode. If I am doing 60 mph and touch the brakes to make an upcoming right turn, the engine brake kicks on if the RPM is over about 1300 and I am using "auto" mode. If I am using "full" mode, at that RPM, the engine brake often will not kick in, or it will, but only briefly, then it shuts off and the truck doesn't downshift as I decelerate, requiring lots of brakes to be used. At higher RPM both modes seem to be equally effective at kicking in the engine brake and downshifting as I slow down. But at lower RPMs - like 1300 to 1400, the "full" mode seems a bit stupid, and kicks off early for no good reason.

Every time I watch videos or talk about automatic exhaust brake it seems like there is a wide range of circumstances when it does and doesn’t come on. I have traveled the same roads multiple times and many times the auto setting behaves differently. Full exhaust brake is way more consistent in its operation. On another note seeing the leaves on the trees makes me miss camping season lol
@JB_WhoWork

Yea I almost never use auto because I don’t like the fact that I have to press the brakes to operate the EB. Full gets the job done but you will sacrifice fuel mileage if you don’t stay on top of it. I was in SC for Thanksgiving and took the pic for the thumbnail, still looks like summer down there lol! Thanks for sharing

You hit the gas in a diesel?
@Incharge7734
@Incharge7734 3 жыл бұрын
I get a kick out of the fact that so many people say"step on the gas" in a diesel truck. It's the throttle on a diesel. Funny how nobody ever says "step on the diesel". Language is a funny thing. If the plural of goose is geese why is not the plural of moose then meese. If the plural of mouse is mice why is not the plural of house then hice. In the city there are many hice 🤔. Linguistic over thought 🤪

Automatic is useless in my opinion. It's designed to only come on when your foot is off the fuel and you go above the last speed you had. Once you tap the brakes it goes straight into full exhaust brake. There will be zero difference between the 2 in tow/haul mode. Tow/haul mode just locks the torque converter quicker and changes the parameters of the computer program to be more aggressive with the exhaust brake vs. not being in tow/haul mode. I always run mine in full exhaust brake and regulate it with my fuel pedal. Biggest thing I tell guys with exhaust brakes is use them all the time. It keeps the vanes moving more and stops them from gumming up with carbon and then causing turbo issues. Just a side note. If you want to make your life a lot easier for backing up with your 5th wheel look into the bd diesel 2-low unlock kit. I put it on my 17 and love it. Switch it on, put the truck in 4wd low, the kit unlocks the front axle for smooth steering, and back into anywhere without touching your fuel pedal or very minor inputs. These trucks have always had to high of a gear for reverse in my opinion. Specially when backing in a trailer.
@JB_WhoWork
@JB_WhoWork 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing! Yea because you have to tap the brakes to turn on the EB, Auto seems more aggressive because of tow/haul like you said. I wasn’t aware of using EB all the time but maybe I will start turning it on more often when not towing! I will look into the bd kit, thanks for sharing!

@@JB_WhoWork I use mine all the time as well as manually down shifting the automatic transmission. I have 50,000 miles on my truck and the brakes still look like new. If you ever check out PD diesel power he just talked about this and in his experience of using the exhaust brake. The brakes will start to fall apart and deteriorate long before they wear out using the exhaust brake regularly.
