I use Norman Lure speed clips and they work great for the most part, but I've had a few situations where if things go just right, the lure can potentially find it's way off. I fish from a kayak with 3 rods usually. What I like about clips is the ability to switch out lures quickly so that I can throw everything I want until something starts to produce hits. Two rods usually have my go to lures, the 3rd rod gets swapped constantly to try different approaches. But in some cases, they all 3 get swapped out for the next loop around the lake. Rinse repeat...

I trout fish a lot and it is difficult to use any kind of swivel without impeding the action of the bait or lure. I'm using 4lb fluorocarbon throwing Rapalas and what not tied directly to the split ring. The problem is that after X amount of casts, the line will develop a twist-knot. Many days, I will have to cut my line and re-tie the lures 20 times due to this. I started experimenting with using lures with and without swivels. The difference in the amount of fish I was catching as minimal. When using soft plastics, jigs or power bait, the amount of fish I was catching dropped dramatically compared to when I tie the lure or bait right to the line. With baitcasting reels, you don't need to worry about the line twist as much. I use a duolock snap with lures, but tie directly to the line/leader when using top water lures, soft plastics or jigs. Saltwater fishing using bait with a spinning reel, you need to use a swivel, especially if surf fishing. If using lures or jigs, it's up to you if you want to use a swivel or not. Also, consider the clarity of the water and the eye sight of the fish. Some fish are insanely smart and will not hit a bucktail jig if they see a weird black thing on top of it's head. Great video, tight lines!

for the walleye fisherman reading: (for jigging) i got a specific rod, i tie a swivel w/ clip to my braided 6-8#. i pre-tie 2-3ft sections of braided line to different size and color jigs, floating jigs, and plain hooks and to swivels for two reasons: 1. change setup faster 2. i love the all-braid feel when jigging. i dont think i sacrifice any feel what so ever with the extra hardware. and when the bite is on, i dont want to waste time fumbling with tackle and knots.

Something like a fixed loop knot like a hoop from a figure 8 knot lets you have a little of both worlds. I hand tie most of my bait jigs and use a swivel with a hooked clip such as the design of the black swivel you are holding up.. I've had a number of fish bend the brass one beside it out of its retainer and lost the fish with kit. I went though a spell where everything was hand tied with one of 3 knots depending on what the lure was designed to do. Now I use a Cable leader with a swivel at the top and a clip at the bottom and a bead letting me know where my leader starts for fishing at night as to solve setting a hook in my own hand as well as give myself something easier to pick up the fish with rather than raw line.

I always use snap swivels when tossing pike and bass lures around...but anything with more finesse needed, or live bait, always tied on. Snaps are great for pike though...I don't even use steel leaders much anymore unless I know I am ONLY going after pike and musky that day. Just that extra bit before the line is usually enough to keep your line out of the teeth. Also, sometimes I use several swivels plus a snap swivel when using spoons and spinnner baits...those suckers twist your line up real bad if you don't.

It can make it more enjoyable though, a dad with some kids, trying to get them into fishing, might want to tie on some because then it's easier for them to change lures. I use the small cross lock snap a lot now. helps jigging for mackinaw when switching lures like jigging raps, blade baits or jig heads, makes it quick, and gives it better action than direct knots... it will hold a 10lb mac diving from 15' to 170' like an anchor, no problem... check the vid. barrel swivels are ok, but for most applications if possible, use a bit leader to distance a good ball bearing or chain swivel, yes they cost more but just perform better...

The clip you should for a crankbait would work... but it looks like a duolock rather than a proper crankbait clip. True crankbait clips can be a bit of a PITA to get attached, but are nice because they have a V shaped crook on the far end where the line attaches. This little crook makes it so much nicer because the knot tends to stay at that point instead of sliding left/right and messing up the crank action when it gets at a bit of an angle in the water. You can also add a split ring to it at either end to change how you can connect it.

South Florida here. I really find that the more hardware you've got on the end of your line, the harder it is to illicit a strike. I was chasing a school of peacock bass (known for striking out of aggression as well as hunger) while they were harassing a school of minnow. I had a live shiner on a hook and nylon leader to a swivel and clip...there was nothing i could do to get them to hit. My shiner died so i tossed him in the water and one of the bass broke off of the pack and blasted my dead shiner so hard he left the water. So, i just went line to hook and threw all that other shit away. I was getting a bass per shiner while they were feeding. Nothing on worms, rapala, swim baits, cranks, top water. Some fish are just too leery or picky to hit all that clunky metal, no matter how convenient it is to change lures.

Lure fishing, no doubt direct tie on. It's a pain if you want to change them constantly so it's probably better to have a couple of rod/reel combos with that. It sucks when you're switching between lighter tackle and heavy tackle

+Sean . We don't have musky but we do have pike of equal size and when fishing for big pike a 40.lb swivel is way too small so in this case it's the anglers inexperience or lack of knowledge. I buy my musky/pike florocarbon leaders from Charlie whose leaders are reccomended on several of the main musky forums. Swivels on my leaders are 175.lb test. Constant casting of big lures puts a lot of strain on your end tackle and you can't take liberties with big fish. Over 40 years i've used all kinds of clips at sea and freshwater fishing and the stringease coastlock and Fast tach clips have never failed us after catching hundreds of pike on them and having to pull out of heavy snags when fishing for pike in inner city canals. Modern clips are way better than stuff from decades ago.

I'll pre-set up various leader rigs and wrap around a cut section of pool noodle (with lengthwise slit cut for tucking in the swivel end (you tube hack idea). Any issues with that rig set up? (I'll notice brim showing curiosity in the snap / swivel metal section --- which makes me wonder about the pros/cons of the different colors out there --- gold and red options?

I like that hack idea! And panfish are super-inquisitive. :-) There are so many different opinions on color. A darker color shows up against the sky, especially in muddy water, and could attract fish, a shiny one would also attract them. I would maybe stick to brass colored.
@AaronHendu7 жыл бұрын
Red is a lovely colour for hooks and hardware when going after pan fish, perch, and trout...especially trout...smallest red hooks you can find, with smallest bit of worm that still covers the most of the hook shank...best trout bait you will ever use, well...unless you don't mind finding "shit" worms...little red worms found underneath cow shit and compost. Those combined with tiny red hooks....epic fishing for panfish and trout...like, best ever...like, bright red, very wriggly looking maggot things on a small shiny red hook...drift it through steams and rivers...awesome stuff. Your setup actually sounds quite ideal as well. Mine is pretty basic...two rods...one rigged for live bait, the other for tossing spoons and cranks. I am quick at rigging so I don't pre-rig anything, though I used to.

tbh I think they're convenient for moving baits but awful for finesse baits / plain hooks / anything slower moving / smaller baits

Single dab of superglue keeps your knot from slipping if you're using a clip.

I always use a clip with the hook/bend at the end. I have lost too many fish with the regular clips pulling out. The hook clips help hold the bigger fish.

Does it really matter? I feel like the attaches would give the lure away

Spoons tend to have a better wobble tied directly to the line with barrel swivels they just spin and spin and don’t have the correct action

If you've got loose lines you won't feel a bite straight away either way

Could u use a swivel on a swim bait?
@fishyaker7 жыл бұрын
Definitely... If they start running crooked or spinning it will help stop line twist. :-)

I use about 2 feet up tie it tie the swim bait on a nother peice of line then atach that oing to the clip
@clansymbiont86886 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't even think about it. It changes the movement of the bait. It will whack back and forth erratically. You may still get hit, but not as often. There are lures where this movement is acceptable, but not with swimbaits, not even with wacky rigs.

I am the worst fisherman. I’m very impatient so use a clip to hold my lures on. I switch lures.....often. Switching between different types until I find what’s hitting

I’m just too lazy to tie knots. 😉

Only time I use snaps is when I'm running bottom rigs and lures other than jigs.

I only use swivels on inline spinner and whopper plopper.
@fishyaker6 жыл бұрын
Those are definitely in need of swivels. :-) :-)

I find snap locks result in 30 percent increase in the hook getting caught up in the line. I find using a leader/swivel (around 2 feet) and tying lure directly to lure is way better. Downside is that I have lost a few more lures given fish bite the line but my strike rate is probably 50% better so happy to lose a 5 dollar lure every few months to catch more fish. If you help it, don’t use a clip

I thought knots would be my nemesis. However, because I’ve only been fishing a couple weeks (couple times as a kid too) I have had rig up so much that knots aren’t the problem.. my problem is getting bites because I think I’m fishing all my stuff wrong lol

completely depends on what you're fishing for if I'm fishing for bass or perch or blue gill the answer is no! if I'm fishing for pike , musky and I need a steel leader! so they don't bite of the the answer is yes!
