As a long term sufferer of what we used to call manic depression, the importance of vigilant family support cannot be overstated. Too many of us get too caught up in day to day things. A kind word, someone to care can make a huge difference in the results caused by depression.

I'm taking SJW as a singular agent and it is working sooo well after a very short amount of time. I can already tell it is working. I have never taken any other medications so this is perfect for me. I'm young and have struggled with low-grade depression for so long, I feel I am remembering what it was like to love life again! I am happy to have found something that is so effective with minimal side effects compared to what docs prescribe.

@@user-th7il5ru9c Absolutely addictive, you will not sleep again without it, and expect withdrawals. I’ve taken for 15 years, can’t get off it. I take WS 5570, standardized extract. Don’t take anything that messes with your brain chemistry. I’ve taken the smallest dose, 1 300 mg tablet a day. If you haven’t taken it long, I would get a suport system together and start a long taper off of it, at least 3 months or more. Im at 70% after 4 months. I find your guest’s attitude interesting, I’m a British Osteopath with 25 years experience who works with a very experienced medical herbalist. In the UK and Europe, our doctors are rather old fashioned and are resistant to try herbal remedies. It’s notable that when helping people with depression, getting them to drink less alcohol and changing their diet is often an effective adjunct. I understand your caution and all is sensible advice, but conventional antidepressants can cause serious problems also.

It seems doctors are too quick to prescribe a drug for an issue instead of trying to find the root cause. My doctor put me on antidepressants when the real issue was low testosterone. The I had another doctor put me on a drug for vertigo when the real cause was allergies. Both had terrible side effects to which the dr. just said we will change your prescription. Basically have to do all my own research now and be my own dr.

I can relate to that. I am having a similar experience and it is difficult to find people to talk to- even therapists. but I have started exploring Buddhism and their philosophy- I think they have such a nice way of looking at life- kindness and compassion for yourself and everything around you, do no harm, meditation etc. I am trying to learn and practise that alongside using SJW to treat PTSD and social anxiety. I was taking 425mg once per day. I sometimes felt a little 'fuzzy' and unable to find the right words when speaking to people- which felt strange. I would also often say things, which I would never normally say either- none of that was terrible, just odd. but the bigger effect of SJW was a more positive one; I was happier than usual and less low. but since exploring Buddhism, I felt tempted to reduce the dosage and continue practising what I learning as my natural self. this has not worked out so well. I went to a lower dose of 330mg for around 3 weeks and I am feeling tense and sad again actually I think numb is more the word- I just cannot smile. I try to but I have to really force it and it does not feel right. so I am trying to find my balance- maybe I am tryhing to reduce the dosage too early. so I may go back to higher dose and keep working on meditation and therapy and see if I can learn more before trying to go down again. I only wanted to say I could relate but I always end up saying more. sorry. I wish you well also.

Excellent. Thank you Bob and Brad. I took St John's Wort years ago when I was severely depressed. Incredablly the very high doses 900mg 3 times a day worked within 6 days. After I got well I slowly reduced and got off them. 20 years later I need something again but I did notice while on it my skin thinned and my eyesight deteriorated! Now that could be just ageing itself. But today you made me aware of the one and only Pharmaceutical medication I'm on is for my underactive Thyroid ! Now you enlightened me that it could have been the problem because of mixing medication. Though I'm a bit stuck as to where to go for natural antidepressants you have at least answered the very question I needed answered. Many many thanks.

I have severe depression but started taking St. John’s wort and one lithium orotate (5mg per day) and it has changed everything for me. I use to take 20 mg of lithium orotate but the side effects were unbearable I had to take a load of curcumin and NAC to lessen the side effects. taking the combination has helped as St. John’s wort on its own wasn’t strong enough but within a couple of days of adding the lithium orotate I felt amazing 🤩 only needed the 5mg of lithium. I believe the serotonergic effects of shrooms and LSD, combined with the increase in neuroplastixity and nerve growth factor is what makes them so useful for depression. This makes for a powerful tool when trying to get out of patterns and delusions that come from long-term depression.

For me, it began to take effect gradually within the first week. You should only take for under 3 months. I took SJW for two and also took Magnesium and Zinc. Hope this helps! Extremely careful to use in children? More or less careful than when using SSRIs? Because children in the UK are prescribed those. In my opinion if a child needs depression meds, St Johns wort is a lot safer than SSRIs. It has none of the dreadful side effects and it doesn't need to be weaned off gradually. I've used it for a long time and it saved me from having to use antidepressants.

I was a little apprehensive coming to the comments from a video like this and I have to say, I am so pleasantly surprised people are far too aware of their own bodies to fall for the words of a pharmacist who isn't presenting very convincing arguments. Yes SJW has many drug-drug interactions but so do many prescription drugs, moreover I had to laugh at the mention of digoxin as it now has much better alternatives that are more frequently prescribed (at least in the UK) so it was almost redundant to mention that. Lastly, I'd like to add my own experience with SJW as I have suffered from moderate depression for over a decade now, and within 2 weeks of trying SJW I already felt the effects (this was suggested to me by my psychiatrist). Stay safe folks!

I read that there was some substance in cured meats that (trytophan?) that you can't consume when taking St John Wort. When I was being treated for mild/moderate depression, the doctor suggested that I take St Johns Wort. At my second appointment, and brought up that "consumption of cured meats" problem, the doctor told me not to worry about it. IMO, this signals that it might be a problem for some people, depending on their individual physiology, but not a problem for most people. I've taken it for almost three years now with no problems.

The tyramine hypertension is highly overrated. It is not 100% proven that St johns wort is classical MAOI like f.e. Selegilin and combining tyramine rich foods which led to (at least suspected) hypertension is only anecdotically proven. There are only very very few case studies of this problem which suggests that the large majority (St johns wort is today very widely used in large volumes) of patients use it without any nutritional adjustement AND without this specific side effect. The real danger is the CYP450 induction (upregulation of drug processing enzymes therefore reducing the effectivity of nearly all other drugs) and the classical serotonine syndrom when combined with other AD's (which nobody should do ever).
