I am a big fan of your videos but you're a bit wrong about why it's called ShangriLa 3:30. It has nothing to do with China as it was constructed in 1983 back when China's own economy was nowhere near where it is now. It was named Shangrila after the fictional place having the same name in James Hilton's book Lost Horizon which was published in 1933, also the Shangrila mentioned in the book was inspired by Hunza Valley and Skardu, it is solely owned by Pakistanis and has nothing to do with China. Thanks for the content, keep it coming.

we didn't really do our research on the resort itself because we didn't expect to be taken there by our guide, but totally understand. I was just making an observation since Pakistan and China have had many relations with tourism, and infrastructure investments like the KKH so it was interesting to see chinese influenced architecture
@SalmanAwan4643 жыл бұрын
@@alexandwhite Your observation was pretty spot on given the name and the Pagoda style architecture, the guide should have told you about it, it's not on you bro. You are doing a stellar job, it's like revisiting the place again thanks to that awesome camera of yours. As for what you didn't like, I had a similar experience in Naran. There were a bunch of guys staying in the room next to ours and I guess they were barbecuing outside, they were extremely loud and they kept us awake till 3 in the morning. However, I am not a nice person either. I retaliated by waking up early at around 6 and kept talking as loudly as possible outside of their room with my friends. These little issues can ruin one's trip, so people need to be careful and also take care of their own trash please. A message to all my Pakistani brethren. Also I apologise on their behalf.

It's fine. It's not a big mistake. Oh and that Plane is a restaurant that is why you smelled something. BTW Pakistan's gdp per capita was $460 in 1983 and China's was $260... look how things change in world history! Our support has been mostly moral and diplomatic. Pakistan faciliated the opening of China to the world (USA in particular) and provided secret corridor for Henry Kissing to visit China and carry out negotiations to bring it back to the UN (before that Taiwan had a permanent seat, pretending to be China). Yes, we have time tested relationship as we helped them when they were not very well off....... China has recently started investing in Pakistan in ports, roads etc. because now they have too much money and want to make good returns too. Before that, it was only KKH to link the two countries and I think both countries foot the bill for that.

Well when he retired he gathered some investors and established Shangri-la resorts. And this was done when China was still a very poor country. But yes, Pakistan and China shares a very close relationship. Edit : 4:07 this is the same plane.

Hotels are painfully inhospitable all over Pakistan, it's worst in the down country. Foreigners are usually given the best of rooms so you can imagine it's worst for locals, especially solo travellers. We need more woman owned accomodations, they simply care more about details, cleanliness and upkeep.

Shangrila name is based on the novel, lost horizon, by james hilton. The everlasring tranquility found in hunza valley. It has nothing to do with chinese investment I was watching a documentary on youtube " pakistans himalayas mysteries of shangri_la utopia" by david adams. The shangrilla was ultimately considered as hunza valley. Anyways, on his trip he went to gilgit, the shandur top, which is the highest polo ground in the world. In his video, he noted that the name "polo" was given by the locals as it means " ball" in local language and it was from here, the british took the game to the west... Thus the iconic jlc reverso watch history originated from gligit of british india, present day pakistan A quirky bit of info for the watch enthusiasts.

Ok so I can understand your concern about the kids running through the halls and the parents staying up late and talking. It’s a very common thing for families to enjoy the late night views of the city because if I’m being honest the views are absolutely breathtaking in the middle of the night. I kid you not you can see a billion Stars in the sky and sometimes even the northern lights. So in local Pakistani tourists actually know about this and stay up late to watch those views. Other than that, families like to take grandparents and sometimes aunts and uncles with them on trips which can explain the huge family and 3 cars. In these situations, I can tell you that this is again super normal for locals of the country. When families unite, we talk for hours on politics, sports, religion and so much more and yes it gets very loud. the kids talk about their own stuff or either play with each other. Unless your family lives fairly close to you, busy lives make it hard for families to see each other quite often and when they do the dinner which was supposed to end at 10 ends at either 3 or 5 in the morning. I guess foreigners are not used to this but Pakistanis have adapted to this lifestyle. And a tip: if it really bothers you, don’t go to the staff, they already have long shifts and really won’t bother THAT much but will do their best. Instead go the the family that’s making the noise directly and talk to them and tell them to keep their voice down politely. They won’t mind instead they will keep the noise down as much as possible. Hope this helps. From a Pakistani

The plane at 4:08 has a history actually and therefore is placed there. This is actually the fuselage of Orient Airways Douglas DC-03 (AP-AAF) plane which on October 13, 1954, made forced landing on Indus River bed while performing Orient Airways Skardu to Rawalpindi flight. All 3 crew members and 11 passengers survived the accident. The aircraft had taken off from Skardu Airport at 8:30 AM and three minutes later made forced landing in river bed after experiencing engine number one failure. The Resort management bought this for PKR 150/- or 200/- only and it’s been here as a cafe since.

The standards of these hotels were impeccable when tourism was high. After 9/11 and the war on terror, Pakistan had no tourists whatsoever and it not only effected the locals income, but the standards of hotels and the staff went down the drain. There was no money being put into updating them as there no point and also no one picked it as a career since there were no tourists. Not even local Pakistani tourists came as pakistan became a very dangerous place with terrorist groups attacking the state. Only in the past few years has tourism slowly returned, I'm hoping that once it is established they use the money generated into updating the hotels and more trained professionals enter the travel and tourism sector.

absolutely correct about all the hotel issues that you mentioned at the end of the video, but beggars can't be choosers. You pay a cheap price for a cheap hotel and you get what you pay for. I have been to skardu couple of times and have stayed in a couple of really nice hotels. that's actually one of my favorite things when im traveling is to stay in a good and nice hotel. So you can't really complain much about the hotel being bad in general when you paid little to no money for the rooms. like I said, you get what you pay for
@alexandwhite3 жыл бұрын
there wasn't much variety out there at least none i could find. there are maybe a handful of hotels over $100+ but what you get for the money doesn't seem to be on par with what should be offered hence why we just went with standard hotel.

You couldn't sleep for two nights because of the unnecessary noise of the children. As a Pakistani, I feel very ashamed of this. Why didn't you complain to the hotel management during the day?

Yes thats the problem with many people around here they kinda don't understand that they are disturbing other people around and bad thing is missing staff but when so ever the staff is available do complain them about their un professionalism.

To understand why it is called Shangrilla, you have to read “The Far Pavillions” by M M Kaye or may be books by Francis Younghusband, these authors romanticised the Northwest Sub-Continent, most of which they is now Pakistan

Pakistan expanded its E Visa service from only 50 to 190 countries looks like tourists from all over the world 🌎 can get E visas for Pakistan.
