In this video I discuss the topic of should you leave the house before your dog? Does it matter? As always with dog training, it is case of looking at each individual situation and weighing up how the dog perceives the situation, as well as your role.
Disclaimer: if you have any aggression or reactivity issues with your dog be sure to complete my online course on nervousness and aggression before implementing any advice given on my KZbin videos as a complete oversight of the method with careful management is needed.

** PS: I NEED YOUR HELP **
My goal is to better the lives of #onemilliondogs in my lifetime. It is clearly impossible for me to do this on a one to one basis. I have seen that with around every thousand views on my videos, I get a comment or email thanking me and letting me know the video has helped. So working on that basis, I have to make videos on how to address every problem
behaviour and accumulate ONE billion views in order to help 1,000,000 dogs.
You can help me reach #onemilliondogs by (1) subscribing to my channel and (2) give this video a thumbs up - so KZbin suggests this video to more dog owners and we can help 1,000,000 dogs all over the world. Thank you so much!
** THANK YOU **

I've been following your advice by being the guardian, making my boy walk with me. Once he's a little too far, as in forgetting that we're a team here, I stopped, turned him around me to stand beside me, and I stood stoic for a few seconds, then I said OK then tap his head lightly, and if he did again, I kept doing it religiously. It's been the third day and we both have improved greatly. I also dropped the leash, asked him to Stay, and went on to observe imaginary threats, then I walked backm, grabbed the leash and OK. The magic that came naturally with your many methods is that he no longer whine nor bark when I left the house! It came as a surprise and I can't praise you enough. Thank you very much for training me!

I had to train my dog to sit and wait until given the "ok" to go out, because he would knock me over trying to rush out before I could even get the door open. We had 3 doors to go through to get to the outside for a walk or to the backyard and I made him sit and wait until I gave him the ok after the door was open. He did very well learning this simple task because he loved to please and was very smart. The last door was a sliding glass door, so he had his sights set before it was even open... LOL... but this made it much safer for me to take him outside.

Yes, and some dogs in the wild , their instincts were to be on the lookout for their pack. People, give your dog some credit for some intelligence

I find this interesting and informative because I just assumed my dog was being boisterous and excited to see what was going on outside, but now I’m rethinking it and realise what I thought of as excitement could in fact be fear and anxiety, with the need to take charge in case of danger. From now on I’m walking out the door and gate first!

Thanks for your great training videos. Always walking out the door first saved my dog’s life last summer in Colorado. When I opened the door, a giant bear (4 ft high on all fours) was standing in the middle of our front yard. My dog would have gone after it, and been killed with one swipe. Since then I consider it not just a leadership but also a safety issue.

Hi Nigel, I watched some of your videos last year In Preparation for a new rescue dog. Your videos are fantastic. The best piece of advice I have ever received is from one of your videos. About checking for dangers, patrolling . Checking out the window. Thanking my dog for alerting me . (I don’t care that I look a bit daft sometimes) If my dog is a bit unsettled we now patrol together with in front, round the garden , check the fences and gates. Then we can go back to having a snuggle. :-)

A very good point! I think I can be prone to rigid thinking but it is clear that Rex popped through before you just because you had opened the door for him, he was definitely still waiting for you and focused on what you were doing whereas Dante was immediately off to scan the outside environment

You are one of my go-to dog trainers now! And I researched up the wazoo to find trainers whose philosophy matches my inclinations. I know you have put out a call for dogs with issues in the south of England. Any chance you want to take a working vacation in South Florida and help me with my dog?

If the dog is being taken out to go potty, is it okay if the dog goes first ? Or should the owner go out first ?
