Basically turn it on and drive away asap keep the rpm under 3k and it will warm up on itself in the best way. If you want to go the extra mile (for the car) wait until RPM’s drop before you move. If the drive isn’t long enough to have the car running operating temperature for at least 15 minutes. Then you probably shouldn’t use a car for that destination. The engine is prone to premature failure if it doesn’t reach operating temperature on the daily commute. This is why young high mileage cars seem to run forever and old low mileage cars have a tendency to mysteriously breakdown more often. The engine is not the only part of the car that performs better when warm. People with DCT’s (specifically sport DCT’s) should give the transmission a chance to also warm up before asking it to do complex shifting. As it also uses oil inside the gears. Also when coming home give your car 40 seconds before you actually turn it off so oil keeps flowing through both the engine and the sutututu. For longevity of the engine minimize stationary running as much as possible. It’s like hell for the engine. You can’t avoid cold starts but you can avoid stationary running. Also: I would love to be corrected if I’m wrong. This is just information I’ve gathered over the years. Because the subject has always been interesting to me.

I live in Canada. I will warm up my 2012 Honda Civic as much as I want for my comfort. The old Hondas I have driven seem to not suffer from any problems from this. And yes I do realize that my car uses fuel as it is warming up.

Listen to your vehicle. Common sense tells you that you should let fluids heat up first. But, this is America and we just proved we lack any sense.
