@mndlessdrwer Жыл бұрын
@@TheMopar97 To some extent your role and the company's image can determine how you should style your hair, but you should be able to tell that before you even interview. Like, if your corporate culture isn't avant-garde, you should probably not expect an external-facing role would allow you to have something like multi-colored death-metal spikes and a whole bunch of piercings and visible tattoos. But for the vast majority of companies, it is no longer necessary or expected to have straightened or intentionally curled hair, so long as it is clean and acceptably tidy for your hair type. I think the only "ethnic" style I've seen get legitimate pushback is dreads, and I can somewhat understand that. It's difficult to keep them particularly clean, but even then, if you can manage to keep them looking clean and presentable, I don't see a problem with it. At the end of the day, as long as your hair looks clean, neat, and tidy for your hair type, that's really all that's necessary.

Brings me back to grad school. One idiot toward the end had the nerve to claim favoritism on some lab reports in the lab I managed. I gave a few teams with girls on them better grades than his team that term. Supervisor brought the accusation to my attention. I did the math. Statistically no difference between boys and girls over the years. The difference was that as the department size grew the average grade decreased and the spread increased. Met the idiot who accused me during my postdoc. He was now in graduate school. He needed help with the stuff I’d tried to teach him a few years before. He destroyed a nice calomel reference electrode because he went out of his way to hook things up wrong. I went out of my way a week prior with the lab tech to make it impossible to hook things up wrong… bnc connection for the reference, banana plug for the working RDE, and an alligator clip for the counter. The moron still got it wrong. What could the lab tech know, right? I was tempted to tell his supervisor he cheated on his GRE and was going to get someone killed. Fun times. Try it, and you'll see you won't get refused over your hair. I've seen a girl on tt a year or so ago claiming to have been refused for being black, she was from the US. Well she went in a training jumper with matching trousers and when I tell you all members of that company, first to last, wear ties, polished shoes and a uniform, you might guess anybody going there in anything else than formal clothes gets rejected. Jeans and shirt? No thank you. Just look for the companies style, some young start ups with super hipster chefs won't hire you if you're too formally dressed😂 try it out, be confident, see what style the company has, any you'll be fine. And if, by any chance, they actually don't hire you for your hair (and not bcs another applicant was better qualified) be glad. The company doesn't deserve you and you deserve much better❤❤❤

@@lilalaune4202im afraid this was better left unsaid. quiet (and not so quiet, but lets just focus on quiet/unspoken/not said outright) acts of discrimination do happen, and can be a factor for some alongside actual reasoning (ie another candidate having a qualification the company hiring wants more). But let's say there are two equally qualified individuals being interviewed. You may not know it, but your coworker, boss, etc could very well harbor biases that can impact the decision. Even subconscious/unconscious bias. This video exists because there are a lot of people this actually happens to, and it's important to listen and think bigger than just your personal experiences. Dont mean to sound inflammatory, just..the way some places are in the US are truly as racist as people say

Gosh this was me 4 years ago. I applied for a different Division within my organization (which is more conservative). My previous Division is very laid back and I felt very comfortable with my natural hair. I asked my director at the time her opinion and she was like, yeah I was wondering what you were going to do with your hair. I ended up wearing a wig honestly. But my 1st day with my new position (I got the job) I wore my natural hair and it continues to this day 😁. It's sad black women are still struggling with is. I'm Gen X so maybe it is more of my generation who struggles with this.

For me personally, everyone's hair should be "neat" for a job interview. It means even though you have straight hair but if it's long and can get in your way, I prefer to tie it up or at least clip it away from my face. Your hairstyle is a good example and I love it❤🤩

i HATE that we have to question ourselves this way. i AM happy we pause and ask of we WANT to work somewhere that would not accept us. its wild but compromising to conform is not sustainable- in my experience. it ultimately signals the wrong thing and coworkers get TOO comfortable and get to talking wild aka.. black but not black black 😒

Be confident & wear your natural hair wherever you want. They can't use it as an excuse for discrimination. Two words: CROWN Act (if such an act has been passed where you live -- it has not yet been adopted in all states). Even if the Act hasn't been adopted in your state, still have confidence in both your hair and yourself. You can be professional regardless of what you look like.

Absolutely. You don't want to work for a company where you aren't appreciated (fuck an accepted) for who you are.
@sg-cg6lr Жыл бұрын
How many companies do that? We can't all work there. Some people simply need to pay our bills.
@Andrea.P. Жыл бұрын
@@sg-cg6lrI wrote a similar comment. Depending on our area they aren't stutting you living your true self. If I have to pop on a straight wig for a few hours to pay my mortgage, get some great health insurance and benefits and be able to go to the best hairstylist in town with the money that job get me so be it. I love folks living their truth but, I can't afford to at this time. Entry level corp workers, people who live in non black areas or High cost of living areas don't have the privilege to miss out on a job. Once you're in the door you can look like a mad scientist 😂

I remember when I first went natural August of 2016. I was so nervous to step outside my house. The feedback was positive. And it was positive bc I MADE the choice to respect and honor my authentic self. When you respect yourself, others are forced to. Happy natural hair journey. It’s soo freeing ❤

Doing interviews and also being on hiring committees it seems like low-key racists will find a reason to score someone lower. It actually sucks and I bring it up in a bright light to discourage it. But, I tend to wear a "white corporate hairstyle" to the interview and box braids for the first day. Ion care once I have a job that will pay my bills.
@Bimb0spit Жыл бұрын
@@prettygemini3432 I’ve never been explicitly told this but I have had hiring managers “praise me” for wearing my hair straight while simultaneously trash talking the other candidate I was up against for wearing her natural hair out for how “unprofessional and unruly” it looked and how it didn’t “fit the brand. “

@anndeecosita3586 Жыл бұрын
@@Bimb0spitI don’t necessarily think it helps or hurts your chances because sometimes it’s all a matter of what they are looking for when they are going for a “look”. and it’s often multi layered. I never straighten my hair and I work in media/PR where I am hired to be the face of the company. After going to work at one job, I overheard the boss saying part of the reason he didn’t want to hire a lady who had also applied was because she is overweight and they didn’t think it would be a good look for her to represent them. She didn’t have natural hair.

Yeah its kinda strange how white women could wear a messy bun and be deemed as appropiate but when a black woman wear her hair out (which is how it looks like since birth) its deemed as messy. Makes 0 sense
