How to find your hair type. Can you tell hair types 4b and 4c apart? In this video I’m going to talk about about the different hair types. In particular determining the difference between type 4a 4b and 4c hair types. Then I’ll take my research and look at the strands of my hair to determine my own hair type. I'll be using the modified Andre Walker hair typing chart to compare. There will be pictures of each hair type and video footage of my hair strands against the hair chart. I hope you this helps you find your own hair type!

I would love to see how 4b looks wet and defined I really feel like no one truly knows how 4b hair looks like. Sometimes I can't even tell if some of my curls are 4b or 4a because when it's wet and it dries it tightens. Also, of course, texture and curl pattern should not be interchangeable. That's why people always assume 4a is only silky which is far from true it can look exactly like 4c texture-wise, but the pattern is ofc different. Also, I feel like that's why the 4c hair mislabeling isn't always intentional or malicious. Many still thinks 4c hair has the "tightest texture" which is false it has the tightest curl pattern. That's why anyone who has an afro and has very kinky hair is already categorized as 4c (or thinks they do). As Nappyheadedjojoba said, texturism existed wayyy before hair typing and I wholeheartedly agree

I've gotten so many disheartening messages about not being able to get the results you want with your hairstyles, so I hope those of you who are 4b hair types can rest assured in the fact that there is NOTHING wrong with your hair! Sometimes hydration isn't the answer!. As we learn more about our beautiful hair, I hope this gives 4c and 4b naturalists some clarity. Sometimes it's because that is the hair that is most susceptible to stretching and manipulation through the styles that we wear (ponytails, heat, etc) which over time can alter the hair. Other times it's bc that's how our hair is naturally textured.

This whole number system is just another way to determine what’s “good” or “bad”. Hair is as unique as a fingerprint and no two people will have the same. This typing system is just a way for product companies to target a certain groups and make money

I believe Oprah Winfrey's hairdresser, Andre Walker, came up with the chart but black women's hair texture was not originally a positive focus on it! It only featured 1a to 2b or 2c for his hair care line then as the texures increased he basically said 4c hair should be relaxed for different hairstyle options! Our textures 3a to 4c were not included for his hair product line which was for straight hair. I don't think the chart was meant to confuse or for hair texturism but I'm not sure what it was for because our hair was not originally featured on it for style and care options! I'm finding the longer my 4c hair gets the harder it is to care for so I might straighten or relax it but I don't think my hair is less valuable than a less curlier texture! I guess some people have hair hierarchy in their minds for some reason!

Hair typing is essential for finding content. I went from 4C to 3C after chemo in 2020. Some go from type 1 to 2or3. They're called chemo curls. Turns out you can go from type 4 to 3. I was natural for 10 YEARS and maxed at 12 inches!! Now I'm only 8 months since hair started growing back and it's already 4 inches. It's still fine in texture, low density and high porosity as before. I can comb it with my fingers, it doesn't get tangles and knots at the end like my 4c hair did so I predict it will be easier for me to retain length this time.

Girl that hairstyle is 💣 ! You're so gorgeous !😍😍 I wish I could wear my hair like that too, but my scalp is so sensitive that I can't use hairpins for my hairstyles. I must confess that I still can't tell what is my hair type; for I have at least 3 different types of coils or curls. But I just embrace my crown the way she is. And Yes, my hair shrinks like crazy!!!🤗😂 Though somewhere around BSL, she shrinks up to my scalp when I let her dry (and she needs about 2 days to be fully dry, but the shrinkage is immediate😭) without any other form of stretching, and to my chin when I style in twists, and I'm not even kidding !😥 My shrinkage is real, especially in the middle of my head where I think I'm 4C or maybe 4B; I still can't tell the difference between these two, really😅😅😅.

Same with me too. When I moisturize my hair it shrinks so bad. But to stretch it, I never use heat on my hair because I'm scared to damage it. I rather do the African stretching style by cutting my hair into medium sections and roll the hair yarn around up to the tip of my hair. When I remove the hair yarn the following day, my hair is beautifully stretch and I can do any hair style I want.

Thank you for this video! It's very helpful. I big chopped not too long ago and am still trying to figure my hair out. I am pretty sure I'm type 4 but as my hair is growing I think the texture/strands are changing or maybe it's my curls getting longer so they are looking different - unclear. But I am loving this natural hair journey and love watching your content ❤︎

The longer it get the more stretched out the pattern becomes. When my hair was growing I thought I would have the same looking pattern but longer. But I didn't. It just became a tight wave. I just recently cut off a few inches and it's back being tightly coil.

In most definitely thin small coils and zig zags. My curls don’t define easily my much like zig zag. Sometimes my crown appears kinda straight buts curly I don’t know so confusing. All I know it’s 4type. This was absolutely excellent!

It makes absolutely no sense to me that 4b is represented as a zig zag and not a coil. I liked your explanation of why that may have happened. It should be a tighter coil than 4a and less tight than 4c. The zig zag pattern should be 4d or something. My hair is coily but doesn’t match 4a or 4c, I consider myself mostly 4b (curly, coily)

Thank you for helping me, at times I feel so in between n sometimes even left out… I truly want to find products perfectly for me! I been using Melanin which helped with its health n I also used 4c products which helped with moisture.. I just can never STYLE my hair 😭😭😭 but your personal video helps ALOT because certain parts of mines has its own pattern.. overall I needed this! Lbs

OMG I was really trying to figure why everyone’s 4C hair did not look mines. The 4C vs 4B explained a lot. My hair is different, it straight in some parts and then it’s a curl that doesn’t curl 🤷🏾‍♂️

I soooooo appreciate you for making this video! I was wondering what natural products I can make to maintain the stretch and keep it moisturized. I consistently get little balls at the end of my twisted hair even though I hydrate and massage it every day and drink a gallon of water. Thank you for making time to answer my inquiry. Immeasurable blessings!

I’ve always thought my hair was 4c, everything that everyone said applied to me, then when I found LaToya and is video, I got a little scared bc I didn’t know if my hair was actually 4c. But this video confirmed me and let me know that I indeed have typos 4c natural hair. Thanks LaToya 😊

I agree with this. Like most other things in life, hair is highly variable and has many factors, even if we correct for styling or technique that can make your hair look widely different from its natural appearance. The hair typing system was most useful for me as a new natural, when the goal was to see what my hair could do. When it comes to seeing what my hair SHOULD do, I pay attention to porosity and other texture related factors (like propensity for single strand knots, etc.) but not curl pattern.

🇬🇧🙋🏾‍♀️This was enlightening and reinforced the irrelevance of curl patterns! "4c" (or any other curl pattern) can look differently on different ppl, as you pointed out. We need to focus more on porosity and healthy regular hair routines. My hair is high porosity, low density, 4c. 80% shrinkage! Looser pattern in the nape. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Of all that info the porosity is what drives my hair care ☺️

Really I think of the hair typing system as severity of shrinkage. 4c hair shrink so much it’s literally insane. I never know how long someone’s hair is lol.

75-80% shrinkage! I'd say the struggle is real but I'm no longer struggling. As soon as I embraced the shrinkage, the coils finally felt free to show up and shine.
