Should you work for free to get SEO clients? Some say no, others say yes. So what's the right answer? Here's two exceptions to consider if you're just getting started and looking to land new clients.

"Free" is a relevant thing. Always charge but you can add things for the client that you don't charge extra for. My POV is to not charge friends at first to gain experience, testimonials and case studies, but charge a low price for outside clients for a limited time and when it expires the service fee increases to a regular rate. Example: Charge a low price for the first 30-60 days then the price goes up to a standard fee. This allows you to gain a customer, prove your skills and get a case study.

I understand your point. But big brands with deep pockets are never going to ask for free work.

I probably could've worded it differently. Well known brands or entities in your niche might be a better way to describe it. Ive seen this done recently with a well known software company that has since gone on to refer hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of work - simply through offering to help at no cost. As for not asking - you're right, they wont, which is why you need to approach them.

They may not "ask" for free work, but once you have them as a client, you can do small tasks for them at no extra charge as a "good faith" gesture to keep them happy. They are more likely to refer you to others clients at their level because they perceive you as amenable, flexible and willing to help a client without brow beating them for every penny. Reputation sells a lot of clients and having a reputation of NOT charging like a lawyer (who charges for sending things like an email) goes a long way in referrals.

So just to personify this a bit further, if my target audience for my SEO services is landscapers who would be the big brand entity I would approach in that niche and what would I offer to do for them??

I really couldnt say, given I've never actually worked with landscapers. What I would think about however is who your target audience might consider a leader or big brand in that space. That could be well known suppliers, well known landscaping brands and so forth. Any brand that your target audience knows that would carry significant weight.
